Chapter 3 The Jade Pendant

Three days had passed since Prince Li Wei Chen and Su Yu Lan shared their moonlit walk through the palace gardens.

Though neither spoke openly of it, both found themselves anticipating the arrival of evening.

For Wei Chen, the endless obligations of court had become slightly more bearable knowing that somewhere within the palace grounds was someone who spoke to him as a man rather than a prince.

For Yu Lan, the palace no longer felt quite so lonely.

The memories of their conversations lingered like the sweet fragrance of spring blossoms.

Yet neither realized that fate was already weaving a far greater destiny around them.

The morning sun rose gently over the Imperial Palace.

Golden light illuminated the countless rooftops and pavilions that stretched across the sprawling palace grounds.

Yu Lan carried a woven basket in her hands as she followed a narrow pathway through the eastern gardens.

The dew still clung to the flowers.

Birds sang from the nearby trees.

It was her favorite time of day.

While most palace servants hurried through their duties, Yu Lan treasured these quiet moments among nature.

She knelt beside a patch of white orchids and carefully removed several withered leaves.

A soft smile touched her lips.

The flowers seemed healthier than ever.

Perhaps it was simply her imagination, but recently she felt strangely connected to the gardens.

As if the flowers themselves welcomed her presence.

The thought made her laugh softly.

"What a silly idea."

Rising to her feet, she continued deeper into a secluded section of the gardens rarely visited by others.

Ancient stone walls surrounded the area.

Thick vines climbed across weathered archways.

According to palace rumors, this forgotten corner had existed long before the current dynasty.

Few people bothered to visit it anymore.

That was precisely why Yu Lan loved it.

The silence felt peaceful.

As she rounded a cluster of flowering shrubs, something unusual caught her eye.

A faint flash of green shimmered beneath the leaves.

Yu Lan stopped.

Her curiosity immediately awakened.

"What was that?"

Carefully setting down her basket, she approached.

The mysterious glow vanished.

For a moment, she wondered if sunlight had merely reflected from a dewdrop.

Yet something urged her forward.

Slowly parting the bushes, she discovered a small patch of earth hidden beneath the flowers.

There, half-buried among tangled roots, lay an object unlike anything she had ever seen.

A jade pendant.

Its surface glowed with an almost unnatural brilliance.

Intricate carvings covered the smooth green stone.

Delicate vines twisted around the edges.

At its center bloomed a flower resembling a lotus made entirely of jade.

Yu Lan stared in amazement.

The pendant looked ancient.

Far older than anything within the palace treasury.

"How strange..."

She knelt beside it.

For reasons she could not explain, her heart began beating faster.

The pendant felt familiar.

As though she had seen it somewhere before.

Yet she knew she hadn't.

Reaching out cautiously, Yu Lan brushed away the dirt.

The moment her fingers touched the jade-

A brilliant emerald light exploded around her.

The garden vanished.

The world dissolved into swirling light.

Yu Lan gasped.

An enormous jade tree appeared before her eyes.

Its branches stretched endlessly into the heavens.

Countless glowing flowers bloomed among emerald leaves.

The air shimmered with golden mist.

Waterfalls of liquid light flowed through a magnificent garden unlike anything she had ever imagined.

It was beautiful.

Breathtaking.

Ancient.

And somehow terribly sad.

A distant voice echoed through the dreamlike landscape.

Soft.

Gentle.

Almost musical.

"The Garden waits..."

Yu Lan looked around frantically.

"Who's there?"

No answer came.

Instead, petals of jade drifted through the air.

The mysterious voice spoke once more.

"When the moon embraces jade... destiny shall awaken."

The words seemed to come from everywhere at once.

Suddenly the vision began to crumble.

The glowing tree fractured.

The garden dissolved.

The light disappeared.

Yu Lan stumbled backward.

The ordinary palace garden returned around her.

She collapsed onto the grass, breathing heavily.

The pendant remained clutched tightly in her hand.

Everything was silent.

Had she imagined it?

Her pulse raced.

The vision had felt completely real.

More real than any dream she'd ever experienced.

She looked down at the pendant.

The jade stone appeared perfectly ordinary.

Yet a faint warmth pulsed beneath its surface.

Almost like a heartbeat.

"What are you?"

A cool breeze swept through the flowers.

For the briefest moment, the pendant shimmered again.

Then all was still.

Later that afternoon, Yu Lan sat alone near a koi pond, unable to stop thinking about the strange experience.

The vision haunted her.

The voice haunted her.

Most of all, the incredible jade garden haunted her.

She had never seen such a place before, yet every detail felt oddly familiar.

As though a forgotten memory lurked just beyond her reach.

Lost in thought, she nearly failed to notice approaching footsteps.

"Yu Lan."

The familiar voice brought her back to reality.

She looked up.

Prince Li Wei Chen stood several paces away.

The sight of him immediately eased her anxiety.

She stood and bowed.

"Your Highness."

Wei Chen's sharp eyes quickly noticed her distraction.

"You seem troubled."

Yu Lan hesitated.

Should she tell him?

The story sounded absurd.

Even she struggled to believe it.

Yet something inside her trusted him.

"I found something today."

Wei Chen stepped closer.

"What did you find?"

Slowly, Yu Lan removed the pendant from her sleeve.

As sunlight touched the jade, the stone sparkled brilliantly.

The Prince's expression immediately changed.

The color drained from his face.

He recognized the symbol engraved at its center.

A lotus surrounded by celestial vines.

An emblem long forgotten by history.

An emblem mentioned only within the oldest imperial records.

Yu Lan noticed his reaction.

"Your Highness?"

Wei Chen stared at the pendant.

"Where did you get this?"

His voice was unusually serious.

"I found it buried among the flowers."

A deep frown appeared on his face.

That was impossible.

The pendant should not exist.

According to ancient legends, it had vanished centuries ago.

Along with the mysterious Jade Garden itself.

Yet there it was.

Resting in Yu Lan's hands.

And somehow, the jade seemed brighter than before.

As though it had finally found the person it had been waiting for.

Far away, within a dark chamber hidden beneath the mountains, a hooded figure opened his eyes.

A green light flickered across an ancient map spread before him.

For years he had searched for the legendary relic.

For years he had found nothing.

Now, at last, its power had awakened.

A slow smile appeared beneath the shadows.

"The Jade Pendant has been found."

The figure rose from his seat.

"Prepare the men."

Outside, thunder echoed across the distant mountains.

A storm was coming.

And neither Prince Li Wei Chen nor Su Yu Lan yet understood that the discovery of a single pendant would soon alter the fate of the entire empire.
