Chapter Forty-Three

The Amber Palace arranged to have the package delivered to the narrow alley behind Alice’s house at midnight. Sebastian was waiting with several friends.

“Here you go.” The agent from DZ Delivery Service (We Know the Zone) lifted the box off the back of the gleaming black scooter, set it on the ground, and opened it with a flourish.

“Courtesy of the Amber Palace Hotel and Casino. In case you dudes can’t read the card, it says, ‘Management of the Amber Palace is pleased to provide these souvenirs of your recent stay with us. We wish to thank you for the excellent publicity you and your human associates attracted while you were guests in our establishment. Please come back soon. Your human friends are welcome, too.’ ”

The agent jumped back on his scooter and zoomed off into the green night. The dust bunnies descended on the box. Chortling with excitement, each selected one of the tinfoil helmets inside.

When the box was empty, the dust bunnies headed for the nearest hole-in-the-wall that would take them down into the Underworld. The night beckoned. On Harmony, the real action came after dark.
