12. Mara
MARA
Iknow something changed during the phone call.
Julian doesn't tell me who it was or what was said, but I've been reading him long enough now to recognize the signs.
The way he sits afterward, laptop open but not actually working, his hands resting on the keys without typing.
The way his jaw sets in that particular configuration that means he's made a decision that can't be unmade.
The way he washes his hands twice in the span of twenty minutes, ritual compounding on ritual, as though he's trying to clean something that won't come off.
Maribel sees it too. She brings him tea he doesn't drink and asks no questions, and when she catches my eye across the kitchen she gives me a look that says: he needs something I can't provide. Then she excuses herself to her room for the night, leaving the two of us alone in the warm, quiet house.
Julian closes the laptop finally. Stands and walks to the window and looks out at the dark street beyond Maribel's front yard. I watch the line of his shoulders, the way he's holding tension in a body that's usually so controlled it barely registers stress at all.
I could ask him what happened. I could wait for him to tell me when he's ready. I could let the silence stretch until morning and pretend I don't understand that whatever choice he made tonight, he made it for me.
Instead, I stand and cross the room to where he's standing.
He doesn't turn when I approach, but I see his reflection in the window glass.
His eyes find mine in the dim reflection, and there's something in them I haven't seen before.
Not fear. Not quite vulnerable. Something closer to resignation.
The look of someone who has committed to a path and knows exactly what walking it will cost.
"Julian," I say.
He turns and looks at me directly. The weight of his attention feels different tonight. Less like being cataloged and more like being seen. Like he's allowing himself to actually look at me as a person he's chosen rather than a problem he's solving.
"You should sleep," he says.
"So should you."
"I can't."
I reach for his hand. Not his arm, not his sleeve like I did this morning after breakfast. I take it in mine and feel the old fracture beneath my fingers, the stiffness in the bones between his thumb and forefinger that he never mentions but that I've noticed every time he flexes his grip.
"Then don't sleep," I say. "Come with me."
He doesn't ask where. He just follows when I lead him down the hallway to the guest room where I've been staying, and when I close the door behind us the space feels different than it did this morning.
Smaller, more intimate. Charged with something not connected to fear.
What he's willing to destroy to keep me safe.
I let go of his hand and turn to face him.
"I know you made a choice tonight," I say. "I don't know what it was, but I know it cost you something. And I need you to understand that I'm not asking you to do this. Whatever you're doing, whatever you're planning, it's your decision. Not mine."
"Mara—"
"Let me finish." I step closer. Close enough that I can see the fine lines at the corners of his eyes, the shadow of exhaustion underneath the control he maintains so carefully.
"You've been protecting me since the moment I walked into your apartment.
You've kept me safe, kept me fed, kept me alive when people want me erased.
And I'm grateful for that. But tonight I'm not here because I need protection. I'm here because I want to be."
His expression subtly alters. The resignation softens into something else. Something that looks almost like relief.
"I'm not good at this," he says quietly.
"At what?"
"Wanting someone. Letting it matter."
The admission lands between us with weight. Julian, who controls everything, who catalogs and calculates and never moves without knowing the outcome, is telling me he doesn't know how to navigate what's happening between us. That the want itself is unfamiliar territory.
I close the remaining distance and put my hand on his chest, right over his heart. It's beating faster than I expected.
"Then we'll figure it out together," I say.
His gaze lingers on me. Then his hand comes up and covers mine, pressing my palm more firmly against him, and the gesture is so simple and so unlike the calculated control he usually maintains that something in my chest tightens.
I reach up and kiss him.
Not the way I did the first time, when I was testing boundaries and seeing if I could make him fracture.
This is different. Slower, deliberate. A kiss that says I'm choosing this, I'm choosing you, and I understand what that means.
His hand moves to the back of my neck, gentle but firm, and he kisses me back with less restraint than I've felt from him before.
Like he's allowing himself to want this instead of just permitting it to happen.
We move to the bed together. Not with the urgency when I walked into his room and locked the door and let him structure the entire encounter.
This time we're moving as though we have time, as though the world isn't collapsing around us, as though this moment is something we're building together rather than something one of us is controlling.
He pulls my shirt over my head and I lift my arms to help him, and when his hands settle on my waist there's a gentleness to the touch that wasn't there before.
He's still careful, still precise, but it's the carefulness of someone handling something valuable rather than managing a variable in a system.
I reach for his shirt and he lets me remove it, and when my hands move across his chest I feel the old scar along his ribs, the one I've seen before but never touched. I trace it with my fingers and he goes very still.
"Gunshot," he says, before I can ask. "Seven years ago. Occupational hazard."
"Does it hurt?"
"Not anymore."
I lean in and press my lips to the scar, and the sound he makes is low and caught, like he wasn't expecting tenderness and doesn't quite know what to do with it.
His hand moves into my hair, not pulling, just holding, and I can feel the restraint in the gesture.
He's letting me set the pace. Letting me touch him the way I want to touch him, without redirecting or controlling or positioning me the way he did the first time.
The rest of our clothes come off slowly.
Each piece removed with attention, with the understanding that we're not rushing toward an ending but inhabiting this space together.
When I'm finally bare and he's lying close at my side, there's no command to keep my hands in place.
No instruction about where to position myself.
Just his eyes on mine, asking a question he doesn't voice.
I answer by reaching for him.
My hand wraps around his cock and he inhales sharply, his hips jerking slightly at the contact.
He's hard, thick and heavy in my palm, and I stroke him slowly, learning the weight and shape of him in a way I wasn't allowed to the first time.
The head is flushed dark, already slick, and when my thumb brushes over it he makes a sound low in his throat that I've never heard from him before. Vulnerable and raw.
"Mara," he says, and my name is both warning and plea.
I stroke him again, firmer this time, and his hand closes over mine.
Not stopping me, but guiding, showing me the pressure he likes, the rhythm that makes his breathing change.
It's the first time he's shown me anything about what he wants instead of simply taking control, and the trust in that gesture makes something in my chest tighten.
He responds by letting me guide him, letting me take some of the control he usually holds so tightly.
I push him onto his back and he goes, and the surrender in it is more powerful than any dominance he exerted the first time.
I straddle him and his hands settle on my hips, and for a moment we just exist like that, connected but not moving, letting the intimacy of the position speak for itself.
His cock rests against my stomach, hard and hot, and I can feel how wet I already am, the arousal slick between my thighs. I shift my hips and the movement drags his length through my folds, and we both make sounds at the contact. His fingers dig into my hips, not bruising but firm, anchoring.
"I want you," I say. Not a plea. A statement.
"I know."
"Do you want me?"
His grip on my hips tightens. "Yes."
The single word carries more weight than anything else he's said tonight. Yes, without deflection or operational reasoning or clinical justification. Just yes, because the answer is true and he's letting himself say it.
I lift my hips and position him at my entrance, and the anticipation makes my hands tremble slightly. His eyes are locked on mine, unguarded in a way they've never been before. I can see everything in them right now. The want. The fear of losing this. The choice he's made to let himself feel it.
I sink down onto him slowly, and the sensation is immense and familiar and entirely different.
His cock stretches me as I lower myself inch by inch, and I feel every ridge, every throb, every place where our bodies connect.
The fullness is perfect, overwhelming, and I have to pause halfway down because the sensation is so intense it steals my breath.
He holds perfectly still beneath me, his hands on my hips steadying but not forcing, letting me take him at my own pace.
"Fuck," he breathes, and his voice is wrecked in a way I've never heard. "You feel?—"
He doesn't finish the sentence. Can't, apparently, because I sink down further and his head falls back against the pillow, his throat exposed, his chest rising and falling with ragged breaths.
I watch his face as I take him completely, watch the way his jaw clenches and his eyes close and then open again, finding mine with an intensity that makes my pulse spike.
