Chapter forty-nine

Galen

Galen stood next to Wynn as they watched from a safe distance in awe and confusion as the light from the gateway dissipated and Alex disappeared into the ground.

“Alex!” yelled Galen in a panic. His scream echoed through the catacombs until the only sound was the wind rushing through the tunnels.

The ground beneath their feet began to vibrate slightly, and the wind began to whirl until it was as if a tornado was ready to touch down, forcing Galen and Wynn up against the wall of bones. The air crackled with electricity, causing loose debris and scattered bones on the floor to rise from the surface before crashing back down. A flicker of light sparked within the ground, which grew in intensity until a bright lavender oval portal of light appeared.

Alex levitated out of the portal, surrounded by swirling energies of yellow, red, white, and orange. He levitated until he had passed Galen and Wynn before ascending the stone stairs. He levitated out of the basement and from the large wooden front doors of the chapel.

Alex was now fifty feet above the group of onlookers at the truck where Danyal’s hospital bed had been placed on the ground. Galen watched Alex release a massive golden flare of light, illuminating the sky as if it were midday and causing the raging storm around them to stop. Galen stepped back as Alex slowly descended until he was standing next to Danyal on the gurney. Andrea and Michael stepped back cautiously away from Alex, who emanated enough light to illuminate the entire area.

Galen watched as Alex reached out with his arms and lifted Danyal from his bed. He closed his eyes and enveloped Danyal in a pink protective cocoon of cosmic vortex energy. Alex gently laid Danyal back on the gurney.

Galen helped Bruno carefully approach with an electronic monitor in his hand.

Bruno told Alex he must step back because his energy interfered with the equipment. Alex quietly levitated about ten feet off the ground from Danyal.

Bruno looked up at Alex and shook his head.

“It didn’t work. You must stop. Whatever you did caused a spike in Danyal’s radioactive isotope levels. Any further exposure will kill him.”

“You’re lying, Bruno,” yelled Alex, telekinetically lifting Bruno two feet off the ground by his neck.

“Stop!” yelled Galen, looking at Bruno’s equipment monitor.

Alex dropped Bruno on the muddy ground and descended to Danyal’s side.

“We have to try again,” said Alex.

“No,” said Galen. “Bruno’s not lying. Would kill him.”

“Then the only option is the serum,” said Alex.

Galen nodded and turned to Bruno, whom Michael had helped to his feet. Bruno opened the protective medical case and pulled out the preloaded syringe of bright blue glowing liquid.

Galen asked Bruno if it was supposed to glow, and Bruno shook his head. Galen removed the cap and turned to hand the syringe to Alex, whose hands shook uncontrollably. Galen steadied Alex’s hand with his hand and placed the syringe in Alex’s open palm.

“I’m scared,” said Alex. “This could be the end of everything.”

Galen raised his left hand to cup Alex’s face.

“Yu’re fuckin’ Alex Lieth! Ya’ve got this.”

Alex turned Danyal’s right arm over and gently inserted the needle into his forearm. After a deep breath, he kissed Danyal gently on the forehead and pushed the plunger down.
