Chapter 49
Chapter Forty-Nine
Central Medical Center
Evanston, Wyoming
“Ready?” Jax stood beside the bed, holding their baby. The little bundle of her daughter was wrapped in a pink blanket.
Kenna brushed back damp hair from her forehead and held out her arms like this was the first time she’d held her baby. Again. “Yes, definitely.”
He laid the baby in her arms. “Eliana, this is your mommy.” He settled on the edge of the bed, while the nurse and doctor bustled around on the other side of the room, giving them a moment of privacy, just the three of them.
“Eliana?”
“It means God has answered.” He touched the baby’s fuzz of hair. “Eliana Hope Banbury.”
“I think you mean Eliana Hope Jaxton.”
“She’s your daughter. Look at her. She’s already causing trouble.”
Kenna shook her head. “It almost sounds like you think that’s a bad thing.
” She lifted her chin, trying to seem perturbed.
She wanted a daughter who took after her and for people to consider them like two peas in a pod.
But if this little one grew up to be wise and strong like her father, Kenna would have no complaints.
“Eliana Hope Banbury Jaxton.”
He smiled. “It’s a long one, but I like it.”
Kenna ran a finger down her cheek. “She’s perfect.”
“You both are.” He leaned down and kissed her, then laid a gentle touch on Eliana’s forehead. “You did good, Kenna. Actually, you were amazing.”
“Thanks.”
“And I’ve decided she’s never investigating a crime in her life. She’s never going near a bad guy or a case or any of that. She can do something nice. Like sell cotton candy, or work in a library.”
Kenna chuckled. “You’ve decided.”
“Yes.” He grinned.
“I guess we’ll see what the future holds. What path she takes, and where God leads all of us.”
“As long as it’s together, that sounds good to me.”
Kenna leaned her cheek against the baby’s head and closed her eyes.
“I’ll let you two get some rest and go give everyone the good news.” Jax went to the door and opened it. On the other side, a delivery guy held a huge bouquet of flowers.
“Oliver Jaxton?”
“That’s right.”
The guy handed over the flowers. “Have a good day. And congrats!”
Jax brought the flowers to the bedside table and pulled out the card. He slid the thick paper from the envelope and read, “I bet she’s gorgeous. It’s signed, Z.”
Kenna smiled. “Zeyla.”
“I talked to my buddy at the FBI. I have a feeling you’ll be seeing her soon enough.”
“Thanks.”
Jax leaned down and kissed her. “Get some rest. We’ve got all the time in the world.”
He eased the door shut behind him, and Kenna looked down at her daughter again. Eliana Hope. Their baby.
Living proof of what God had done and how far He’d brought both of them.
Thank You.
