Chapter 6

The Anatomy of an Anomaly

Lucius Blackwood does not make mistakes—at least, never intentionally.

Every single decision that bears his name is meticulously calculated long before it is ever set into motion.

He weighs the compounding consequences, measures the immediate impact, and, most importantly, evaluates the exact level of absolute control it will allow him to maintain over his environment.

In his heavily guarded world, there is no such structural concept as chance or luck.

Everything that manifests within his perimeter is entirely deliberate, ruthlessly planned, and executed with cold, surgical precision.

That is the unyielding baseline of his entire existence.

This time, however, a distinct and glaring variable has drifted far away from that established pattern.

The assignment itself is supposed to be fundamentally simple—a clean, quiet execution that draws zero unnecessary attention and leaves absolutely no loose ends behind for the authorities to piece together.

That has been his explicit expectation. But the men he has assigned to the perimeter have failed to follow his precise instructions, as incompetent men so often do.

They rely far too heavily on raw, unthinking force, consistently mistaking excessive, bloody violence for actual power, and mindless chaos for a display of dominance.

It is a deeply flawed, amateurish way of thinking—one that Lucius has never tolerated throughout his career, and one that usually carries a fatal price.

To Lucius, power without absolute control serves no real purpose; it is merely a loud, wasteful expenditure of energy.

A task should always be completed to the exact, precise extent required by the objective—demanding nothing more and absolutely nothing less.

Anything that spills over beyond those designated boundaries is not a reflection of strength, but a glaring testament to poor judgment and an inability to restrain oneself.

And yet, his subordinates overstep those lines regardless.

The immediate result of their lack of discipline is a trail of unnecessary damage and a situation that has turned far messier than it ever has a right to be.

As expected, once the smoke clears, the exhausting responsibility of correcting their structural failure falls entirely back upon his shoulders.

Logically, he could have easily left the scene the moment his own objectives are secured.

In fact, by every metric of self-preservation and strategy, leaving her on the damp pavement would be the most logical decision available to him.

There is no practical reason for him to linger in that suffocating darkness. And yet, he hasn’t left her behind.

He has paused. He has looked down at her. And then, for reasons he still cannot fully articulate or define within his own mind, he has lifted her from the rain and brought her directly into his private sanctuary.

That singular decision does not align with a single rule of how he traditionally operates.

Lucius does not act on sudden impulse, and he certainly never involves his resources in situations that yield no clear, tangible purpose.

Every action he takes is measured to the millimetre; every move is entirely intentional.

This time, however, that lifelong consistency has been completely disrupted—and that exact disruption is what he finds most deeply unsettling about the entire sequence of events.

Sitting behind the polished expanse of his desk, he opens the manila folder once more, reviewing its typed contents for what feels like the twentieth time.

The intelligence his operatives have gathered is clear, exceptionally detailed, and contains absolutely no structural gaps.

Tessa Rathor. Her documented background is remarkably ordinary, almost painfully unremarkable.

She leads a simple, quiet life as a dress designer, maintains a strictly limited circle of personal connections, and poses absolutely no threat to his organization or his secrets.

By every logical, objective standard of his world, she is entirely irrelevant.

And yet, she is currently sleeping inside a high-tier medical suite that operates entirely under his personal jurisdiction.

He is the one who has made the executive call to bring her here. He is the one currently ensuring she receives the absolute best medical attention money can buy, and ultimately, he will be the sole individual to decide the exact hour she will be permitted to walk out of those doors.

Her personal cell phone has been sitting in his possession since the night of the attack.

Accessing the encrypted data within the device hasn’t been difficult at all; ordinary people consistently tend to wildly overestimate the digital security of their personal electronics.

Lucius has personally reviewed every single archive—every text message, every historical phone log, and every contact stored in her memory banks.

There is absolutely nothing unusual or hidden buried within the code.

There are no secret corporate affiliations, no suspicious family ties, and no hidden agendas.

Everything about her life is… clean.

And ironically, that total lack of complexity is precisely what makes her presence in his world so incredibly difficult for him to justify.

Lucius steps away from the dark wood of his desk, walking slowly toward the massive floor-to-ceiling window of his office.

Below him, the sprawling grid of the city continues its relentless march—busy, deafening, and pulsing with life.

To the untrained eye of the masses, the city appears completely unpredictable, a chaotic storm of human free will.

But Lucius sees the landscape differently.

To him, the city is merely a massive, interconnected system—one that can be systematically influenced, quietly redirected, and completely controlled if one understands the mechanics of its infrastructure.

In the courtroom, he operates seamlessly within the rigid structure of the law while simultaneously finding the exact fractures to reshape it to his clients' absolute advantage.

He doesn’t break the rules; he simply reinterprets them with a lethal level of intellect.

Evidence can always be adjusted, narratives can be expertly guided, and final outcomes can be subtly influenced before a judge ever picks up a gavel.

Beyond the polished wood of the courtroom, he takes the exact same measures to ensure that nothing in his life moves beyond his reach.

Control has always been more than enough to satisfy his ambitions.

And yet, there is now one glaring variable resting in his private facility that refuses to fit neatly into his carefully constructed system.

Her.

That reality, in and of itself, is a distinct problem. And Lucius Blackwood does not tolerate problems in his routine; he resolves them. He eliminates them with a cold efficiency whenever it becomes necessary. It is normally a straightforward, clinical process that requires no second thoughts.

But this time, for reasons that irritate him to his very core, he has consciously chosen a completely different approach.

He chooses to observe.

Over the past six days, he has maintained a strict, calculated distance from her recovery room, refusing to interact with her unnecessarily or let her see his face more than required.

Still, despite his physical absence, he remains acutely, intensely aware of every single detail regarding her existence—her micro-movements, her daily routine, and the steady progression of her physical condition.

Absolutely nothing within the perimeter of those sterile white walls exists outside his immediate awareness.

She undoubtedly believes she is free within the confines of her room, and she believes she is safe.

In a very literal sense, she is entirely correct.

The facility is the safest place in the entire city for her.

But it is only safe because he explicitly allows it to be.

What her innocent mind fails to realize is that her entire sense of temporary freedom exists strictly within the precise boundaries that he has personally defined for her.

Every step she forces her healing body to take, every minor decision she makes throughout her day—it all remains contained within a cage of his own design.

For a brief, heavy moment, Lucius closes his eyes, the rain outside cast in sharp relief against his silhouette.

The unfamiliarity of the situation is a constant, scratching irritation against his nerves.

No high-profile legal case has ever possessed the power to distract his intellect in this specific manner, and no individual has ever held his attention for this long without a clear, transactional reason.

And yet, Tessa Rathor holds it without even trying.

That fact alone makes her presence both highly inconvenient and potentially dangerous to the order he keeps.

Still, he has absolutely no intention of removing her from his equation just yet.

Instead, he will maintain absolute control over the unfolding situation, exactly as he has always done with every other variable in his life.

Until her fragile body fully recovers from the trauma, she will remain exactly where she is. There will be absolutely no exceptions to this directive. No one from her past will come looking for her, and no one will be permitted to take her away from his sight.

Because at this point, she is no longer just an accidental, fragile victim who has stumbled into a crossfire.

She is officially under his personal supervision. And absolutely no one leaves the supervision of Lucius Blackwood without his explicit, written consent. Once he makes a definitive decision, he never alters his course.
