Chapter 10
The Bleeding Threshold
The nights are no longer as quiet and predictable as they used to be in Brooklyn.
Even when everything appears perfectly normal on the surface, Tessa can constantly feel something heavy shifting beneath the mundane reality—something remarkably subtle, yet entirely persistent.
By the time the exhausting hours of the day come to an inevitable end and a heavy silence slowly settles over the city streets, an unfamiliar, scratching unease begins to spread inside her chest.
It isn’t a tangible threat that she can physically see or easily explain to her friends, but she can feel it clearly with every breath, like a hidden presence crouched somewhere deep within the expanding darkness, patiently waiting without ever revealing its face.
That night is absolutely no different from the rest.
The hands on the wall clock have already crept far past the midnight marker, and by all logical metrics, the fashion boutique should be closed hours ago.
The storefront lights should be flicked off and the day left behind like any other ordinary piece of her past.
Yet, Tessa remains stubbornly inside, sitting completely alone at her worktable as if an unseen anchor has fastened her to the wooden chair.
The heavy rolls of fabric scattered across the surface, the unfinished charcoal designs pinned to the corkboard, and the half-drunk, lukewarm cup of coffee resting beside her hand all seem to blur into one quiet, stagnant moment that flatly refuses to end.
None of this isolation has been intentional on her part, and yet every single detail about her current state feels deliberate in a way her mind simply cannot comprehend.
Going home to her empty house doesn’t feel right anymore.
The mere thought of turning the key in her front door brings a strange, visceral resistance within her mind, as if stepping out of the perimeter of the shop right now will trigger something dangerous and completely irreversible.
It isn’t a feeling of overt fear, exactly, but it is close enough to make her hesitate at every turn.
Eventually, she lets out a slow, ragged breath and forces her heavy muscles to push her up to a standing position.
Her physical frame feels significantly more weighed down than usual as she begins walking toward the main light switch near the counter, intending to finally kill the illumination and force herself to leave for the night.
But just as her foot hits the floor to take another step, a sharp sound cuts violently through the heavy stillness of the boutique.
It is a soft knock against the glass of the front door.
The sound is faint, almost entirely uncertain, yet it is unmistakably real.
Tessa froze instantly in her tracks, her entire body going rigid as the dense silence stretches out around her like a taut wire.
For a few agonizing seconds, absolutely nothing follows the sound, and she frantically wonders if her restless mind has begun to play cruel tricks on her senses, inventing ghosts in the dark.
Then, the sound comes again—two distinct knocks this time, slightly louder, sharper, and completely impossible for her to ignore.
Her heart lurches violently against her ribs, the sudden spike of adrenaline making her ears ring.
Who can possibly come to a small dress designing shop at this ungodly hour of the night?
The terrifying question echoes relentlessly inside her mind, but she doesn’t dare move an inch.
She forces herself to stay perfectly still, compressing her lungs to breathe as slowly as possible, desperately hoping that if she waits long enough in the shadows, the person outside will eventually stop and everything will return to normal.
But the universe doesn't grant her that grace.
The very next knock comes with a quiet, unyielding insistence that instantly erases any lingering doubt from her mind.
It is her door. There is absolutely no mistaking the location now.
Tessa’s gaze darts toward the clock on the wall—12:45 AM—and suddenly her throat feels completely dry, as if she is swallowing ash.
A strange, suffocating heaviness settles deep inside her chest as she forces her feet to begin the slow walk toward the entrance.
Each step she takes feels significantly slower and heavier than the last, as though she is physically moving against a powerful, unseen current in the air.
The closer her body gets to the cold wood of the door, the stronger the underlying unease becomes, tightening around her sensory receptors like a vice, making every passing second feel stretched, fragile, and dangerous.
She comes to a halt right in front of the door frame, her right hand lifting slightly before hovering uselessly in the dead air.
For a long, tense moment, she cannot bring herself to touch the brass lock.
A single, looping question circles through her frantic mind: Should she actually open it?
She knows she doesn’t have to. She has every right to ignore the summons, to pretend the shop is entirely empty, and to simply wait in the shadows until whoever is lurking on the pavement eventually gives up and walks away into the night.
That is undeniably the safer choice for an ordinary girl.
But then another thought pushes through the panic—quieter, gentler, yet infinitely more persistent: What if someone out there is severely injured and needs help?
That single, fragile possibility is more than enough to shatter her lingering hesitation.
Taking a deep, stabilizing breath, Tessa reaches forward and turns the deadbolt.
Her fingers move with extreme care, as if even the smallest mechanical click might shatter the fragile silence wrapped around her.
She pulls the heavy door open just a fraction of an inch, just enough to let her eyes scan whoever stands on the other side of the glass.
In that very microsecond, the breath catches instantly in her throat, leaving her lungs burning.
Lucius stands directly on the threshold.
But he is not as she has ever seen him before in her life.
His massive, imposing body is leaning heavily, desperately against the brick doorframe, one of his large hands pressed flat against the wall as if it is the singular object keeping him upright from collapsing onto the concrete.
The heavy shadows stretching across the front of his expensive button-down shirt look significantly darker and wetter than they should under the streetlamps, spreading unevenly across the fine fabric.
It takes her brain a long, agonizing second to fully process the visual information in front of her eyes.
It is blood. A massive, spreading stain of it.
The terrifying realization hits her like a physical blow, sending a cold, hollow emptiness cascading through her entire chest.
Her eyes widen in complete horror as she stares at his silhouette, her logical mind struggling to process the contradictory image.
This man, who always carries his frame with such absolute control, such surgical precision, and such an unshakable, dominant presence—he looks…
broken. He is not weak, for there is still a terrifying core of steel visible in his stance, but he is undeniably, critically injured.
For a few hollow seconds, Tessa completely loses the ability to think.
Nothing in her world makes sense anymore.
Why is he here in her part of the city? How has a man of his immense power ended up like this in a dark alleyway?
And more importantly, out of all the hidden facilities and personal doctors he possesses, why has he chosen to come to her door?
The primitive fear inside her begins to spread slowly, wrapping its cold fingers around her analytical thoughts, but it is quickly, violently overtaken by something much stronger and more immediate. Instinct. Pure, unadulterated survival instinct for the man in front of her.
Without fully realizing the magnitude of the action she is taking, Tessa pushes the door open much wider, exposing the warm interior of her shop to the cold night air.
Lucius doesn’t say a single word to break the silence.
He simply looks down at her face, his dark gaze incredibly steady, yet carrying a massive, invisible weight she hasn’t seen during her stay in his facility.
There is a profound, bone-deep exhaustion buried just beneath the surface of his eyes—hidden from the rest of the world, but entirely unmistakable to her.
Tessa steps aside into the shadows, giving his massive frame enough physical clearance to enter her sanctuary, and he moves forward without a moment of hesitation.
His footsteps are significantly slower than usual, completely lacking the effortless, predatory control she has always associated with his movements.
Yet, there is still a terrifying, deliberate effort visible in the way he carries his spine straight; it is completely obvious that he flatly refuses to let the physical pain fully take over his consciousness.
The moment she closes the heavy door behind his back, locking them both inside, Tessa notices that her hands are trembling violently.
She tries to steady them, pressing her palms flat against her thighs, but the slight shaking refuses to stop.
The silence inside the boutique feels infinitely heavier now, almost suffocating in its intensity.
Lucius comes to a halt a few steps into the room, his back to her, and Tessa remains exactly where she is by the door, her mind racing as countless unanswered questions flood her consciousness.
But one terrifying realization raises high above all the other thoughts, sharp, icy, and completely unavoidable: He knows exactly where she lives and worked.
The truth settles over her mind slowly, sending a brief wave of absolute stillness through her blood.
He hasn’t stumbled upon her small shop by a stroke of blind chance or luck.
He has come here tonight because he knows exactly where to find her.
Before her mind can dwell on the dangerous implications of that knowledge any further, her attention is forcefully pulled back to his physical condition.
The blood is much more visible under the warm interior lights of the boutique, the dark crimson stain spreading rapidly across the threads of his shirt.
His breathing is slightly uneven now—heavily controlled through sheer willpower, but not entirely steady.
That visual is more than enough to yank her entirely out of her own head.
She cannot just stand there and watch him bleed out on her floor.
Moving slowly, deliberately, she steps closer to his perimeter. The fear hasn’t disappeared from her heart, but it no longer holds the power to restrain her movements. Right now, what matters is beautifully, terribly clear: he is hurt, and he has chosen her to help him.
She stops just in front of him, close enough to feel the radiating warmth of his physical presence, close enough for everything about his dangerous existence to feel more real, more intense than ever before.
She has never seen this side of him—never been permitted this close to him in such a profoundly vulnerable moment.
Her throat feels incredibly dry, and when she parts her lips to speak, no proper words come out of her mouth.
It isn’t a question, nor is it an accusation of why he is there—it is just a quiet, unsteady breath that carries the full weight of everything she cannot say aloud.
Slowly, almost hesitantly, she raises her hand toward his chest. For a brief, terrifying second, she pauses in mid-air, her fingers hovering just an inch above the ruined fabric of his shirt, as if crossing that final bit of distance will make this nightmare undeniably real.
And then, she touches him.
The intense warmth of his skin strikes her first through the cloth, followed immediately by the sticky, terrifying dampness of fresh blood beneath her fingertips.
It is real. Far too real to deny. Something massive shifts deep inside Tessa’s chest at that exact moment of physical contact—something she cannot fully understand or categorize.
The fear is still rooted there, but it is no longer alone in the dark.
There is something else entirely mixed with it now—something deeper, a strange, magnetic pull that forces her to stay right there next to him instead of stepping back into safety.
And in that quiet, heavy, blood-stained moment, Tessa realizes one thing with absolute, undeniable certainty: this night is never going to remain ordinary.
Lucius hasn’t just appeared at her door by a strange coincidence of the dark.
He has brought something dangerous and invisible with him into her small universe—something that is about to completely alter every single page of her life from this exact point forward.
