Chapter 13

The Threshold of Suspension

The thick, heavy dark of the night has already settled completely by the time an absolute silence wraps itself around the small design shop.

It isn’t the kind of quietude that feels peaceful, restorative, or comforting to a tired mind.

It is significantly heavier than that, almost entirely unnatural, as if the physical boundaries of the room itself have stopped breathing right along with her.

Tessa has flicked off the main light switches without thinking too much about the action, operating on a raw instinct that quietly decides brightness simply doesn’t belong in this space anymore.

The consuming darkness makes the interior feel vastly more contained, hidden, and deeply private, as if the chaotic world outside no longer possesses the legal or physical permission to interfere with whatever is unfolding inside these walls.

All around her, the familiar anchors of her daily life look strangely foreign in the shadows.

Heavy fabric rolls are scattered haphazardly across the cutting tables, intricate design sketches lay half-drawn under charcoal pencils, and the metal sewing machine stands completely idle and cold in the corner.

Everything looks perfectly normal by definition, yet absolutely nothing feels normal.

There is a strange, crushing pressure vibrating through the air—something Tessa can’t logically explain to herself, but flatly can’t ignore either.

It stays rooted right there in her chest, subtle but constant, like a dark thought she is entirely unable to fully complete.

And through it all, Lucius is still here.

He sits rigidly near the far wall, positioned not very far from where she stands frozen in the dark.

His massive body is leaned slightly back into the frame of the chair as if he were resting his limbs.

But to Tessa’s eyes, it doesn't feel like rest in any conventional human sense of the word.

His posture remains perfectly controlled, entirely deliberate, as if even the act of stillness is a calculated choice he has executed rather than a physical necessity his bleeding body desperately demands.

There is a quiet, lethal authority radiating from the way he occupies the physical space—not loud, aggressive, or visible, but absolute in a manner that makes every other object around his silhouette feel remarkably smaller and insignificant.

He is critically injured; that reality is blindingly clear to her now.

The heavy stain of blood, the tight, unyielding tension in his jaw, and the terrifying way he holds his physical frame together despite the trauma—it all points directly to a severe gunshot wound.

But what truly unsettles Tessa isn’t the sheer extent of his physical injury.

It is how remarkably little the damage seems to matter to him outwardly.

There is no trace of panic anywhere in his features, and no visible struggle against the pain.

If anything, he looks like a man who has already accepted agony as a permanent, predictable background noise in his daily existence.

Then, without a single word of warning, Lucius moves.

His hand reaches into his dark coat pocket and retrieves his personal cell phone.

The entire motion is slow, terrifyingly precise, and almost completely mechanical.

He glances briefly at the glowing screen once, his thumb moving across the glass to dial a number without a second of hesitation.

Tessa’s eyes catch the caller ID briefly before he tilts the device slightly out of her line of sight—he is contacting his personal doctor.

After the connection goes through, he simply extends his arm, holding the phone out toward her.

Tessa hesitates, her breath hitching.

His dark eyes are locked onto her face the entire time, steady, unmoving, and unreadable deep.

There is no impatience in his gaze, and no forceful demand—just a heavy, unyielding presence.

That dense silence stretching between them feels infinitely heavier than any spoken instruction could have ever been.

Moving carefully, she reaches out and takes the device from his gloved fingers, bringing it up to her ear.

She forces her voice to remain steady as she begins explaining the critical situation and their current coordinates to the urgent doctor on the other end of the line.

But even while her lips are moving to deliver the medical details, her conscious attention keeps slipping right back to the man sitting in front of her.

Because Lucius hasn’t altered his rigid position at all.

He is still sitting perfectly upright, as if absolutely nothing in the physical universe possesses the power to shift his spine unless he explicitly allows it to happen.

That is the exact moment Tessa notices the reality more clearly than ever before—the terrifying way he carries visceral pain like it is just another minor, calculated detail he has already accounted for in his ledger.

It is an inconvenience to his schedule, perhaps, but it is never going to be enough to break his iron control.

The realization makes him feel distinctly less human in a strange way, or perhaps, it makes him vastly more dangerous than any other living soul she has ever been permitted to close distance with.

She is still trapped on the phone call when the atmosphere violently fractures.

A sound. It is incredibly faint, scratching from the direction of the front glass door.

At first, Tessa isn’t even entirely sure her ears haven't played a trick on her paranoia. But she isn't granted a single second to analyse the disturbance further.

Lucius reacts instantly.

Everything about his imposing frame shifts in a single, fluid microsecond.

There is no confusion in his eyes, any analytical hesitation, and absolutely no visible surprise.

There is only a lethal, waking awareness.

His dark gaze lifts slowly, sharpening to a razor's edge as if the entire layout of the boutique has narrowed down into that one singular point of entry. And then, he stands up.

He rises slowly. Deliberately. Moving as if he already knows exactly what is coming down the street for him.

Tessa’s logical mind registers a sharp, screaming thought that she needs to step back, to put distance between her and the door.

But her physical body flatly refuses to follow the command of her brain.

Something about the sheer magnetism of the way he moves makes it entirely impossible for her to separate her primitive survival instinct from her reaction to him.

He walks directly toward her.

Each step his boots take across the floor is flawlessly controlled, measured, and quiet, as if even this terrifying moment is already mathematically calculated somewhere deep inside his intellect.

The closer his silhouette comes to her perimeter, the harder it becomes for her to formulate a coherent thought.

Her breathing feels uneven and shallow, and she hasn’t even noticed the exact moment her pulse runs away from her control.

And then, Lucius comes to a complete stop right in front of her face.

He is too close. Far too close for safety. He is positioned so tightly against her frame that the air trapped between their bodies no longer feels empty; it feels thick, electric, and heavy. His physical presence entirely consumes her reality, pushing the rest of the world out of the equation.

One of his large hands is still pressing firmly against his bleeding side, clamping down on the injury with an unyielding control, as if even the physical flow of his own blood has to stay strictly within the limits he chooses to set.

That tiny, brutal detail unsettles Tessa far more than she expects it to.

Because even in this compromised state—injured, bleeding out on her floor, and standing precariously on the absolute edge of physical instability—he isn’t losing a single ounce of his dominance.

He maintains it through sheer willpower.

And somehow, that display of iron resolve makes the tensions between them feel infinitely more intense, almost suffocating.

A faint, dragging sound echoes again from the pavement outside the shop, but Tessa barely registers the threat anymore. The danger outside doesn't matter. Because Lucius is moving even closer now, stepping right into her shadow.

There is almost no physical space left remaining between them.

His warm breath brushes softly against her cold face, slow, steady, and intoxicatingly close—so close that she can feel the heat of it against her skin far more than her mind can understand the physics of it.

Her body stays entirely frozen, caught like a bird in a net between her survival instincts and a dark, nameless pull she doesn't have the vocabulary to define yet.

He doesn’t move an inch further forward.

Neither does her.

The suspension feels entirely intentional on his part.

It is as if he were deliberately holding the fragment of time in place, refusing to force anything, refusing to rush the resolution, just keeping the moment perfectly balanced as if time itself belongs to his jurisdiction.

That heavy silence stretching between their lips becomes unbearable in a completely different way; it is no longer an empty void—it is completely full.

It is overflowing with a silent, dark tension she can't contain.

His piercing gaze doesn’t waver for a fraction of a second. It stays ruthlessly locked onto her eyes, steady, unreadable, and deep, as if his intellect were quietly studying a secret she doesn’t even know her features are displaying to him.

The frantic sound of her heartbeat feels louder than anything else inside the quiet boutique.

And then—he leans even closer.

There is barely any distance left between their skins now.

His steady breath touches the contours of her lips, faint but terrifyingly real, and suddenly every other variable in her life completely disappears.

The dark room, the suffocating silence, her rational thoughts, her fear of the men outside—they all fade into a distant, irrelevant background noise.

Only this singular, heavy pocket of time remains real.

And still—Lucius doesn’t bend down to kiss her.

That is the strangest, most agonizing part of the calculation.

Nothing happens. There is no sudden movement forward from him, and no clean resolution to the tension.

There is only the unbearable, breathless stillness of an emotion suspended in time, waiting without explicit permission to continue its course.

It feels entirely deliberate on his part, as if the midnight moment itself has been engineered strictly to hold her captive right there in his arms.

Tessa doesn’t know whether she is supposed to find her sanity and step back into the dark… or stay exactly where he has pinned her.

Something deep inside her soul shifts then.

It doesn't happen with a sudden, violent panic, but slowly, fluidly, like a profound decision she doesn’t consciously make with her brain.

Her rigid self-control simply slips away from her grip without a shred of resistance.

Her analytical thoughts completely stop trying to separate what is safe from what is dangerous, or what is right from what is wrong.

Giving up the fight, she simply closes the remaining millimetre of distance between them.

And her lips touch his.
