Chapter 14 #2

Adrian studies her features for another long moment, calculating her involvement, before he speaks again with a quiet authority. “Good. Then help me one more time.”

Meanwhile, his men are already meticulously securing the entire perimeter of the boutique.

Through the thick glass of the front window, Lucius can hear the low, gravelly timbre of voices outside—quiet, monosyllabic communication cutting through the tactical earpieces, followed by the heavy, structured movement of boots near the main entrance.

The hostile threat that has pursued his car through Brooklyn isn’t completely gone from the streets.

Everyone present in the room understands that grim reality with absolute clarity.

Yet, somehow, Lucius’s hyper-vigilant attention remains entirely anchored elsewhere.

Tessa moves quietly toward the far worktable to gather whatever clean supplies she can find for immediate sanitization.

He watches her closely, noting the subtle, betraying tremor in her fingers as she tries her absolute best to keep her hands steady under the heavy gaze of his guards.

She is putting up a brave front, but the profound nervousness beneath her fluid movements is entirely visible to a man of his observation.

Even so, the most deeply interesting part of the calculation is this—she has not panicked, and she has not run away into the dark corners of the building to preserve her own life.

She is still standing right here, inside his perimeter.

Most ordinary people instinctively move away from the sight of fresh blood, raw violence, and unpredictable danger.

They retreat into a defensive shell. Tessa, however, does the exact opposite tonight; she moves directly toward the chaos instead, adapting to his bleeding presence without a single word of protest.

With practiced, clinical efficiency, Adrian uses a pair of medical shears to cut through the ruined, blood-soaked fabric of his expensive shirt, exposing the raw wound hidden beneath.

The exact moment Tessa sees the damage clearly under the warm interior lights, her small body tenses visibly, her breath catching in her throat.

The bullet has grazed deeper than a mere superficial scratch, tearing through layers of flesh, but it has ultimately missed fracturing any bones or piercing anything critical to his survival.

It is severe flesh trauma and massive blood loss, but nothing fatal to a man of his constitution.

Adrian recognizes the parameters of the injury immediately, though his professional expression darkens with a heavy layer of irritation anyway.

“Most ordinary people go straight to hospitals after being shot,” the doctor mutters dryly, his fingers moving to prepare a local anaesthetic while he examines the torn flesh. “You, apparently, prefer fashion boutiques.”

Lucius completely ignores the dry critique, refusing to grant it a response.

Because his attention has already shifted entirely back to her.

Tessa is staring at the raw injury now, her hands clasped tightly together, and although a deep primitive fear still exists in her pale expression, something vastly stronger has begun mixing with the panic.

Concern. Genuine, visceral concern for his survival.

And somehow, that quiet display of empathy disturbs Lucius far more than her fear ever could.

Fear is a reaction he knows how to manipulate, control, and exploit to his absolute advantage.

But real concern from an innocent soul is a variable he has no protocol for.

He does not protect people. He does not allow himself to become attached to anyone.

Emotional attachment creates catastrophic structural weakness in a man's armour.

Weakness ultimately destroys people in his line of work; he has seen it happen too many times throughout his youth to ever mistake it for anything else. It is a fatal flaw.

Yet this girl… this ordinary dress designer is slowly, systematically disrupting every single sacred rule he has built his entire adult life around.

With a swift, precise movement of his forceps, Adrian finally extracts the jagged lead bullet fragment from the wound.

A blinding wave of white-hot pain flares sharply through Lucius’s body for several agonizing seconds, forcing the air out of his lungs, before the sensation gradually fades back into something manageable through sheer willpower.

Fresh, sterile white bandages rapidly replace the ruined, bloody fabric of his shirt.

Within minutes, everything within the immediate space becomes clean, heavily controlled, and thoroughly professional once more.

But inside the corridors of Lucius's head—there is only absolute chaos.

Because he understands something now with a dangerous, terrifying level of clarity.

Something fundamental has shifted within the air tonight.

This is no longer a simple case of transient physical attraction between a man and a witness.

It is not a passing curiosity regarding an anomaly either.

And perhaps the most dangerous, fatal realization of all—he isn’t doing a single thing to try and stop the descent.

Tessa is still looking up at him through the shadows of the boutique.

And suddenly, as he looks back into her wide eyes, Lucius realizes something almost entirely absurd, a dark irony that makes his pulse quicken.

Tonight, his deadliest enemies have deployed their best men, and yet they have completely failed to kill his body on the asphalt.

But this fragile girl standing in front of him? She might have successfully touched something deep inside his soul that he has firmly believed has died and rotted away years ago.
