Chapter 48 #2
Victor's voice comes through the darkness, steady and cold. "And neither cans us."
Kai's smile disappears instantly. "Minor problem."
Victor immediately adapts to the pitch-black warehouse, his eyes scanning the absolute dark. "Thermal cameras?"
Kai’s fingers are already flying across his screen. "Give me ten seconds."
"You have five."
"You're getting greedy," Kai mutters under his breath. Five seconds later, a subtle chime echoes over the commas, and the weapon sights on Victor's rifle system begin showing faint, glowing heat signatures through the dark. "Got them. Feeds are live."
Victor moves first, a shadow cutting through shadows. "Go."
The team advances through the suffocating darkness of the warehouse.
Every man covers another; every single movement is deliberate and silent.
Victor leads them through the labyrinth of metal shelving while Kai feeds real-time enemy positions directly through their earpieces.
Teajun takes the front, his rifle raised.
Kael clears the blind corners with lethal efficiency, while Alex protects the rear.
Lucius moves through the centre like a phantom, eliminating anyone who gets too close before the enemy can even register his presence.
The warehouse becomes a brutal, claustrophobic sequence of close combat and muffled gunfire.
A man suddenly jumps from behind a wooden crate, lunging blindly at Lucius.
Lucius blocks the first strike with his forearm, catches the man by the throat, and hurls him against the concrete wall with bone-crushing force.
Another attacker opens fire from a metal balcony above, muzzle flashes illuminating the dark.
Alex reacts instantly, raising his sidearm and shooting him dead before the man can adjust his aim.
"You're welcome," Alex calls out over the commas, reloading in the dark.
Lucius doesn't even look back as he advances. "I didn't ask."
"Still welcome."
Then, Kai's voice changes over the earpiece, the playful edge completely vanishing. "Victor."
"What?"
"I found Alessio."
The entire team freezes in place, their breathing shallow in the dark. "Where?" Victor demands.
Kai stares at his tablet, his brow furrowing as he reads the tracking data. "He's not here. He used the warehouse as a distraction."
Victor's expression darkens into something terrifying. "Then where?"
"The casino. He’s consolidated his final guard there."
The casino is already under siege by the time the Blackwood convoy arrives.
Once a place filled with jazz music, expensive suits, and endless streams of money, it now looks like a scarred monument to a dead empire.
Shattered glass covers the grand entrance like winter frost.
Thick, black smoke rolls through the main hall.
Gaming tables are violently overturned, and orange flames climb one of the velvet curtains near the upper balcony, casting demonic shadows on the walls.
Alessio has gathered the remaining members of his syndicate here, turning the luxury building into his final, desperate stronghold.
Victor studies the burning entrance for two seconds, his mind mapping out the layout before he gives the final order. "We split."
Lucius looks at him, his eyes hard. "No."
Victor turns to face him, his voice unyielding.
"Listen first. We need to cut off his escape routes through the building before he disappears again."
He points towards the digital map Kai has displayed on a portable screen.
"Kai takes the security room to open the eastern corridor. Kael and Teajun clear the ground floor. Alex takes the western side. I'll take the centre."
His eyes move towards Lucius, holding his gaze. "You go upstairs."
Lucius nods flatly, his jaw tight. "And Alessio?"
"He's waiting for you at the top," Victor says. The words hang in the heavy air between them.
Lucius turns and walks towards the burning entrance. Teajun catches his shoulder for a brief moment, stopping him. "Come back."
Lucius looks at the doctor, a quiet understanding passing between them. "You too."
Teajun gives him a small, grim smile. "Deal."
The grand mahogany doors explode inward, blasted off their hinges. The final battle begins.
Gunfire immediately floods the casino, the sound deafening as it echoes off the high ceilings. Victor moves straight through the centre hall, shouting tactical orders while firing precise bursts between every single sentence. "Left corridor! Move!"
Alex takes down an attacker breaching the bar area and immediately swings his weapon to cover Teajun.
"Two coming from the slots!" Teajun turns instantly and fires, dropping both men before they can raise their weapons.
Kael charges through the wrecked lounge, fighting three men at once in a brutal blur of motion.
He catches one punch, blocks a second, and drives the first man hard into the bar counter before kicking the second into a heavy mahogany table.
The third attacker scrambles backwards, pulling a concealed gun, but a sharp crack from the upper balcony takes him down.
Kael looks up into the shadows. "I had him."
Kai shouts back over the railing, a smoking rifle in his hand, "You were taking too long."
"I wasn't."
"Sure." Kai turns back to his screens, his fingers flying. "East corridor opens! Grid is clear!"
Victor hears it through the noise. "Move!"
They advance together, a seamless wall of violence.
The casino seems endless, every room and VIP lounge containing another desperate pocket of Alessio's men.
Yet the Blackwood team refuses to slow down.
They cover each other's blind spots, pull each other out of incoming fire, and keep moving forward with relentless momentum.
When Victor is pinned down behind a marble pillar, Alex risks the open floor to lay down suppressing fire.
When Alex runs out of ammunition, Teajun throws him another magazine without breaking his stride.
When Kai is cornered by an ambush in the security room, Kael reaches him before the attacker can land a blow.
And when Lucius is momentarily surrounded on the grand staircase, Victor orders the rest of the team to hold the ground floor line so Lucius can keep moving upward.
They are no longer fighting as separate men; they are fighting as one single, lethal unit.
Lucius reaches the upper floor, stepping onto the plush, blood-stained carpet. The roaring noise of the battle downstairs begins to fade into a distant rumble, muffled by the heavy architecture. The long, golden corridor before him is almost completely empty.
He walks slowly, his weapon raised, passing broken doors and shattered display cases.
There are bodies on the floor, but none of them matter now.
His entire focus is locked on the double doors at the very end of the hall.
The entrance stands wide open. The midnight wind moves violently through the shattered windows beyond it, carrying plumes of grey smoke across the dark wooden floorboards.
Lucius stops just outside the threshold, his chest rising and falling with steady, cold breaths.
A lone figure stands near the window, silhouette framed by the burning city skyline. Alessio.
For the first time that night, neither man has an army standing between them. There are no more soldiers. No more armoured vehicles. No walls of blinding gunfire to shield them from their sins. Only the two of them.
Alessio turns around slowly, his tailored suit torn and covered in ash. A tired, mocking smile appears on his face. "You made it."
Lucius steps into the room, his boots crunching on the glass. Behind him, the faint, rhythmic crack of gunfire continues to echo through the casino. "You knew I would."
Alessio looks at the dark blood staining Lucius's clothes. "You've lost a lot tonight, Blackwood."
Lucius's eyes remain fixed on him, completely void of warmth. "So have you."
Alessio lets out a quiet, bitter laugh, shaking his head. "You still think this ends with you winning?"
Lucius raises his gun, the barrel aligning perfectly with Alessio's chest. "No."
Alessio's smile disappears instantly, his face turning pale.
Lucius takes another slow step forward, his voice like ice cutting through the wind. "I think it ends with you."
For a long, agonizing moment, they simply stare at each other. Years of inherited hatred, blood debts, and brutal betrayals stand between them in the small room. Every death they caused, every family member they lost, and every lie they told to survive has led them inexorably to this single space.
Alessio slowly raises his weapon, his fingers tightening on the grip. Lucius does the same, his steady gaze never wavering.
Then Lucius speaks his voice quiet enough to sound almost calm against the roaring fire outside. "No more running."
Alessio's expression hardens into a mask of pure malice as he fully raises his gun. "Then die here."
