Chapter 49 #2

For three long days, the universe stands completely still. Nothing changes. The indicators remain flat, the numbers frozen on the screens.

Then, on the fourth morning, a sudden shift shatters the silence. Lucius's index finger twitches against her palm.

Tessa freezes, her entire body locking into place. She looks down at their joined hands, her heart leaping into her throat. For a cruel, terrifying second, she thinks she imagined it—a ghost of her own wishful thinking.

Then it happens again. A tiny, distinct movement of his fingers curling inward.

Her breath catches, a sharp gasp escaping her lips. "Doctor! Doctor, come inside!"

The quiet room instantly explodes into a chaotic sequence of movement.

A team of doctors and nurses rush past the threshold, their white coats rustling as they swarm the bed.

Victor stands completely rigid outside the glass, his eyes wide; unable to process what his senses are telling him.

Beside him, Kai covers his mouth with both hands, while Alex stares blankly at the monitors.

Kael lowers his head, a faint whisper escaping his lips. "He's coming back."

The lead physician quickly checks Lucius's pupillary response, shining a small light into his eyes. Lucius's fingers move again, more pronounced this time, and his heavy eyelids begin to tremble against his skin.

Tessa breaks down, laughing through her fresh tears as she leans over the bedrail. "Lucius… look at me."

His eyes slowly, agonizingly roll open. The world around him is a blurry, distorted haze of white acoustic ceiling tiles, cold fluorescent light, and the sharp outline of medical equipment. Then, as the shadow play clears, a specific face comes into focus. Tessa.

Lucius looks directly at her, his pupils slowly tracking her movement. For the first time in four days, his eyes are truly awake—clear, dark, and present.

Tessa lets out a wet laugh, her fingers squeezing his tighter. "Oh God… you're awake."

Lucius’s lips part, his chest heaving as he tries to form a syllable, but no sound leaves his throat, only a dry, rattling breath.

She leans closer, pressing a hand to his chest to soothe him. "Don't talk. Just rest. The doctors are here."

His dark eyes don't stay on her; they slowly move past her shoulder, drifting towards the doorway where the silhouette of his closest ally stands. Victor is anchored near the frame, watching the exchange. Lucius fixes his gaze on him, a silent command passing through the space.

Victor steps closer, entering the room with a quiet, heavy stride until he stands at the foot of the bed. "You scared the hell out of us, boss."

Lucius's pale lips move again, forming a tiny, desperate shape.

Victor bends down immediately, lowering his ear close to the pillow to catch the phrase. "What is it?"

Lucius looks back at Tessa, his gaze lingering on her face for a fraction of a second before his eyes lock onto Victor one last time. His breathing grows noticeably weaker, the rhythm of his chest stuttering against the white sheets.

The cardiac monitor continues its background track.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

Lucius struggles against the sudden weight in his lungs, forcing a final, microscopic pocket of air through his vocal cords. Victor leans closer still, his ears straining against the hum of the ventilator.

Lucius's voice is barely audible, a phantom whisper that cuts straight through Victor’s ribs. "Take care of her."

Victor freezes mid-breath, his entire body turning to stone.

Tessa looks up from the bedside, her eyes darting between the two men, sensing the sudden, terrifying shift in the air. "What did he say, Victor? What did he just tell you?"

Victor doesn't answer, his eyes fixed on the man in the bed.

Lucius's gaze returns to his wife, focusing on her features for one final, unbroken moment.

There is an immense, unmoored love in his eyes—the kind of profound, agonizing love that knows it has no future left on this earth.

His cold fingers slowly tighten around hers one last time, a final anchor before the tide pulls him out.

Then, the tone of the cardiac monitor abruptly changes, the gaps between the sounds stretching out.

Beep.

A longer, terrifying pause follows, the numbers on the screen plunging into the red.

Beep.

Another endless delay. Lucius's dark eyes suddenly lose their focus, the light behind his pupils vanishing into a hollow, empty void.

Tessa's trembling smile disappears instantly from her face, her skin turning as pale as the sheets. "Lucius? Look at me. Lucius!"

The green line on the display continues its downward slope, flattening out into a straight, unwavering horizontal marker.

Beeeeeeeeeeep.

The endless, high-pitched tone fills the small room, vibrating against the glass walls with a merciless finality.

Tessa stares at his frozen face, her hands shaking as she grips his wrist. "No. No, no, no."

The medical team moves instantly, pushing her aside with clinical force. "Get the crash cart in here! Charge to two hundred!"

Victor steps backwards, his boots hitting the wall as the chaos unfolds before him. "No…"

Tessa fights against the nurse holding her back, her fingers clawing toward the bed. "Lucius! Wake up! You just looked at me!"

The doctors begin chest comprehensions, the heavy thud of their hands vibrating through the mattress. Lucius's lifeless body moves mechanically beneath their pressure, a hollow shell reacting to force.

"Clear!"

The paddles hit his skin, and his torso jerks violently off the bed before slamming back down onto the sheets. The flat line remains unbroken on the screen.

"Again! Charge to three hundred! Clear!"

Another dull, heavy shock thuds through the room. Nothing changes. The green line stays flat, the endless beep drilling into their ears.

Tessa drops to her knees on the linoleum, weeping uncontrollably, her face buried in her hands. "Please! Oh God, please don't take him!"

Victor turns his head away, his jaw trembling as he stares at the floor. He cannot watch this. He cannot watch the apex of their empire be reduced to a mechanical failure on a screen.

Kai stands completely frozen in the open doorway, his arms hanging dead at his sides, while Alex’s face has gone a sickening, hollow white. Kael slowly lowers his head into his chest, his hands clenching into bloodless fists.

The lead surgeon stops, his hands resting on Lucius’s chest as he looks up at the monitor, then slowly turns his gaze towards the weeping woman on the floor. He looks at her with a heavy, professional sorrow. "I’m sorry. There is no cardiac activity. Time of death—"

"No!" Tessa screams, shaking her head violently as she scrambles back to the bedside, tearing her hands away from the nurse. "No, you're wrong! He was just awake! He just opened his eyes and spoke to us!"

Her voice cracks into a raw, bleeding shriek that echoes down the entire intensive care corridor. "He just talked to me!"

Nobody answers her. The silence of the room is absolute, broken only by the machine.

She reaches out, her fingers trembling as she touches his sharp cheekbone. His skin is already still. Cold. Empty of the fierce, dangerous soul that once ruled the city.

The man who had survived every gang war, every betrayal, every bullet, and every single enemy they threw at him; the man, who had held her in his study and promised to return, is gone.

The monitor continues its endless, merciless, monotone ring through the quiet room.

Beeeeeeeeeeep.

And this time, Lucius Blackwood does not come back. ~
