Chapter 421 He Finally Signed
Lucian came in not long afterward.
When he reached the bed, he found Zara curled up under the covers with her back to him.
"Going to sleep already?"
His voice was gentle. After all, this woman was now his wife, at least in name.
"What else would I be doing?" Zara replied bluntly.
She thrust one hand out from beneath the covers and slapped the notarized documents onto the bed.
"Lucian, just sign these. Once you do, I'll finally have some security."
Once he signed them, she could finally make her move.
Zara kept her back to him and refused to look his way, preventing him from reading her thoughts.
But the moment Lucian saw the papers, the smile on his face visibly froze. "You insist on discussing this on our wedding night?"
"If you won't sign, I'll assume you're stringing me along."
Zara turned toward him, but the instant she remembered that her thoughts might be exposed, she squeezed her eyes shut again.
"You agreed to it yourself. It's not like I forced you."
Lucian's expression turned completely cold. For once, he looked genuinely angry.
"And then what? Once I sign, are you planning to kill me?"
"Of course not!"
"Look me in the eye and say that."
"I can't even beat you right now. Why are you always so paranoid, Lucian? Just because I want you to sign an inheritance agreement doesn't mean I'm actually going to kill you."
Under the bed, Aurelion fell silent.
How did she manage to say something so shameless with a straight face?
Lucian considered it for a moment. "After tonight."
Zara said nothing.
[After all this, are you seriously still trying to take advantage of me?]
She pulled the blanket over her head. "Then let's sleep. I'm tired. Don't touch me. Good night."
Lucian laughed in disbelief. "Do you know what tonight is?"
"I do. It's our wedding night."
After she said that, Lucian fell quiet instead.
He simply stood there, watching Zara keep her eyes tightly shut.
After a moment, he said, "Suit yourself."
He then went to take a shower. On his way past the bed, he casually reached underneath, grabbed Aurelion and Pyrelion, and tossed them out of the room.
Both dragons were speechless.
Zara opened her eyes but made no attempt to rescue them.
A while later, Lucian finished his shower and returned. Zara immediately closed her eyes again and pretended to be asleep.
If he dared try anything, she would kill him on the spot.
There were limits to what she would tolerate, and sacrificing herself for money was definitely not worth it.
Lucian lay down beside her.
Honestly, Zara would not have cared if they simply slept in the same bed without doing anything. It was not as though they had never slept in the same room before.
But now that they were technically married, everything suddenly felt strange.
[Should I pretend to kick him out of bed in my sleep later?]
Warmth radiated from beside her.
Lucian was lying on his side, facing her, and she was certain he had not closed his eyes.
After a while, he said, "You want me dead. I can tell."
Zara still had a conscience, so she forced herself to lie. "Lucian, I don't."
His voice dropped. "But if I'm going to die, I at least want to know why. If I loved you so much before, why do you still want to kill me? There has to be a reason."
"You're already the Holy Consort, second only to me. If you want the power and authority I possess, I can give them to you. You could have anything you wanted." H asked, "So why do you still want me dead?"
Zara fell silent.
The reason was lying right beside him.
He still had not signed the papers.
Of course, compared to ruling two worlds, killing him for his inheritance did sound embarrassingly petty.
Zara suspected that if she admitted money was the reason, Lucian might gouge her eyes out on the spot.
After thinking it over, she simply said, "I don't."
Lucian paused, then tried a different question. "You don't want me to conquer Earth?"
"That's right."
"Why? You aren't even from Earth."
Zara fell silent.
[But you are.]
If the people of Earth ever learned how quickly he had turned his back on his own world, they would be devastated.
"It's different. Earth means something different to me." Zara stared up at the ceiling and sighed softly. "I grew up there, Lucian. Didn't you grow up there too?"
She added, "Do you really have to lead the Divine World in an invasion? You know they're two separate worlds. If the Divine World conquers Earth, its people will inevitably treat everyone there as a defeated population."
That was how these things always worked.
Once one side established absolute dominance, the relationship could never remain equal.
If the Divine World successfully invaded Earth, how would the people there feel?
The Divine World's inhabitants would inevitably regard Earth as nothing more than a colony.
Living under that kind of imbalance would be unbearable for everyone on both sides.
Lucian lowered his gaze, his thoughts growing complicated.
Zara continued haltingly, "I never knew where I came from when I was growing up. But Earth was my home. An old woman found me and raised me. She sang the most beautiful songs. She taught me a lot of things too."
There was no need to be embarrassed about saying any of this.
Whatever Zara's true nature might have been, the old woman's quiet influence had still taught her the basic difference between right and wrong.
"You and I both know that if an invasion really happens, everything will change."
Besides, Valerius had not even brought the mystic beast territories under control.
As soon as Zara finished speaking, the documents floated slowly through the air and stopped in front of Lucian.
"So, Lucian, you should really sign these."
Lucian fell silent.
Then he turned over and went to sleep with his back to her.
Zara stared at him.
Damn it!
Since he still refused to sign, there was nothing she could do for the moment.
When she opened her eyes the next morning, Lucian was already gone.
The notarized inheritance agreement lay beside her.
He had signed it.
His sweeping signature was bold and commanding, just like the man himself.
There was no fingerprint, but a signature should still count, right?
"He really signed it..."
Tears of joy filled Zara's eyes.
Aurelion and Pyrelion, who had been thrown out the night before, crawled back into the room. When they saw Zara clutching a sheet of paper and nearly crying with happiness, they paused before immediately understanding.
"So does that mean we can make our move now?" Aurelion asked.
Even Pyrelion sounded uncertain. "Are you really going to do it?"
Zara tucked the agreement away, washed her face, brushed her teeth, and got herself ready before answering them.
"Of course I am. I don't have all day to keep playing these games with him. My younger siblings are waiting for me, and Allen is waiting for me to bring back news."
By the time she returned to Earth, it would probably already be the new year.
With all the time lost traveling between the two worlds, the entire trip would take nearly a month.
When she counted it up, she and Lucian had known each other for almost half a year now.
She had never expected everything to change so drastically in such a short time.
Zara clicked her tongue.
Seeing how eager she looked, Aurelion could only sigh in admiration.
"Cold-blooded and ruthless. That's Zara for you. How many people could possibly compete with that heart of ice?"
No.
Even creatures that were not human probably could not compare.
Aurelion was a dragon, and even he could not help being impressed.
Zara smiled all over and said, "Shut up!"
