Chapter Thirty-Two

Oliver

Ty and my mom have tried to call me numerous times and I can’t for the life of me understand why I didn’t hear the ringer. It’s on and turned up. I don’t know what’s going on with my luck lately. This new phone better not be a lemon. But I can’t worry about them now. I’ve already got too much on my plate. Ty and Mom will just have to deal with whatever is happening over at his place.

At least I’ve been able to get some writing done at Mom’s while waiting for the cable guy to get here. Why can’t they show up when they are supposed to? I understand emergencies, but we’re on day two here. Just as I’m complaining to myself, the doorbell rings and I let in the serviceman. After I show him the cable box, I leave him to work and try to call Ally. Again, it goes straight to voicemail. She’s probably thinking the worst and refusing my calls. Like, how could we have an amazingly sexy weekend and then I never call her. I know Mom finally told her what happened, but I should have been the one to tell her.

The guy comes up from the basement and lets me know he has to order a new box. Did they not tell him what I told them and how it was water-logged? I don’t ask because it won’t help. He lets me know he should be able to come back next week and they’ll call with a date and time frame. I thank him and show him out. Hopefully, Mom will be moved back in and I won’t have to be here for that. And now that he’s done early, I can finally go see my girl.

She needs to know I love her and how special she is to me. Being away from her has been excruciating. I didn’t think I’d miss someone so much in such a short period of time. I hope she got my messages letting her know I’d see her soon. But not before picking up a bouquet of all-red peonies, hoping they mean the same thing as red roses.

Bounding up the stairs of her apartment building two at a time while whistling a tune we heard on our date at Martino’s, I’m filled with excitement and can’t seem to hop the steps fast enough. I knock and listen for the patter of her feet on the hardwood in her hallway. Nothing. I knock again. Still nothing. I decide to go over to Ty’s apartment to see if she’s there with Mom. No answer. Huh, that’s weird. I try Ally’s door one more time and realize that the door is unlocked. That’s not normal. I let myself in, hoping she’s okay. I gently lay the flowers on the kitchen table and tiptoe through the apartment, checking each room until only the bedroom is left. When I open her door to investigate, I can’t believe my eyes. Ty is not only here and didn’t tell me, but Ally is snuggled up next to him, wearing his college T-shirt, his favorite T-shirt that he only lets special girls wear. I walk backward out of the room and shut the door. I storm out the front door and slam it behind me. I could give a rat’s ass if I wake them up.
