Chapter 1

Jade - 6 Months Ago

I hardly recognize myself as I look at the woman staring back at me. I twist left, then right, smiling. My hair is up in a bun with a simple gold pin, my makeup is a little heavier than I would usually wear and I have on ridiculous fake eyelashes that make my blue eyes pop. And glitter is in places no one should consider having glitter.

So much fucking glitter.

The dress I picked for tonight is green and very short, but it hugs my figure and makes my boobs stand out a little more than normal—especially with the glitter shimmering across my chest. And of course, finishing off my outfit are my trusty silver strappy Jimmy Choo sandals.

No wait. What’s actually finishing off my outfit are the damn fairy wings attached to my back.

Trixie talked me into coming to this Halloween party her agent is holding at some fancy club in the city. Because in her words “you need a night to pretend to be someone else. Let go and have some fun. Forget Dave. He’s a world-class prick and you, my friend, are a ten”.

That's right I’ve just broken up with my boyfriend because, being the absolute cliche he is, he was cheating on me with his PA. What is it with men not being able to keep it in their pants at the office? Apparently, according to him, I’ve been distant and not giving him enough attention.

Guess what, Dave? You could have said this to me instead of sticking your dick in another woman.

Am I being unreasonable? I don’t think so, but here we are. I'm newly single and Dave’s with Karen, who apparently, gives him all the attention he needs.

Good luck, sweetheart.

It just sucks that I still have to see them both around the office. Of course, my ex-boyfriend works for the same company and on the same floor as me. I’m not holding on to any feelings for the prick, but it’s the principle. The worst thing about it all: no one in the office knows why we broke up. I didn’t want everyone knowing he’d left me for someone else so we just said that it wasn’t working, and now the office gets to see him making heart eyes at Karen.

Fucking Karen.

Well, screw you, Dave. I mean what sort of name is Dave anyway? It’s a side character's name. He was never to be the main male character in my story.

So, that’s why, on this cold Saturday night, I’m dressed as Tinkerbell. It’s an inside joke with my friends that because I’m blonde, only 5 foot, and have an attitude, apparently I’m Tinkerbell.

To be fair, I do feel pretty good as I take in my appearance. Trixie’s right. It has been a while since I let my hair down as Dave was pretty much like his name suggests—boring and non-descript. We rarely went out or did anything spontaneous.

He wasn’t always so uptight. Especially in the beginning. I initially fell for him because of his spontaneity and lust for life. But something changed when we moved in together.

He liked routine and structure, which is fine, but fuck me, it's boring. Even our sex life had to be scheduled. If I suggested anything remotely dirty or different in the bedroom he would turn his nose up, telling me that ladies don’t act like that. Well, Dave, I’m no fucking lady, not tonight. I’m going to have some fun.

“Jade? You ready girl?” Trixie hollers, bursting into my bedroom. “Well, damn. You look hot.” Drink in hand, she looks every bit the model she is. In a sexy pirate outfit, short skirt, ripped up the sides, showcasing her killer legs, made even more sexy by her black knee-high boots, and a bodice that pushes up her ample breasts. Men will be falling over themselves when she enters the room, that’s before they get a look at her stunning face.

“Trix, you look gorgeous. You’re going to stir up trouble tonight.”

“Now, what makes you think that?” She shrugs, a naughty smile tugging at her lips. “Come on, we’re pregaming in the living room. Let's get you warmed up.”

Lily’s already pouring drinks when we enter, shaking her arse to some Backstreet Boys. She looks fabulous in her witch’s outfit. Her red hair is poker straight, her porcelain skin is flawless, while her eyes are smoky. A crooked witch's hat finishes off her outfit.

Handing me a glass of some cocktail she has made, she smiles wickedly. “Oh, ladies, we’re going to have some fun tonight. You guys look insane.”

“Tonight’s Jade’s night. She’s moving on from that bellend, Dave, and if she happens to find a hot man with big dick energy, who will show her how a real man treats a woman, I’m all for it.”

“Jesus, Trix. Say what you really mean.” Taking my drink from Lily’s outstretched hand, I take a big pull, wincing slightly at the amount of alcohol as I flop onto the sofa.

“Oh come on, you didn’t really love Dave. You aren’t even really that upset that you broke up.” Lily sits next to me and bumps my shoulder with hers.

“She’s right. I don't think I’ve seen you cry.” Trixie sits on my other side, mirroring Lily’s gesture.

“You’re both right, I guess. I wasn’t really in it at the end. I can't say I blame him.”

“Erm, no, you don’t get to give him a free pass for cheating on you. If you don’t want to be with someone, you break it off. You don’t do what he did.” Lily frowns at me.

I know she’s right but I can’t help feeling hurt. I have to push any thoughts of Dave away, tonight is a night to move forward not backward. “Shots?” Leaning forward, I line up the three shot glasses waiting on the coffee table.

“There she is.” Trixie grins, as she fills our glasses with tequila.

“Oh hell, it’s one of those nights?” Lily shakes her head.

“Yes, Lily. It’s one of those nights. We need to cling on to the hope that maybe those fictional men that we read about are real.” Lifting her glass, Trixie says, “To finding our own happily ever after.”
