Chapter 17- Fractured Minds And Broken Hearts

"You have arrived at your destination," the GPS announced as the car rolled to a stop in front of a glowing mansion, standing majestic in the quiet of the night.

Leonard barely put the car in park before Aurora opened the door, stepped out, and slammed it shut without a word. She stormed toward the house, her pace unrelenting.

Leonard sat still for a moment, staring at the mansion with an unreadable expression. Then, with a sharp breath, he gripped the wheel and drove off, tires screeching lightly against the asphalt.

Inside the house, Aurora flung the front door shut and made a beeline for the stairs.

"Hey! Where do you think you're going? Auri, come here!" Gemma's voice rang from the kitchen, sharp with concern.

"Not now, Mom," Aurora replied briskly, already halfway up.

"Aurora Noelle Raven, stop!" Gemma's tone turned commanding.

Aurora paused, turned halfway, brows furrowed. "Seriously?" she muttered and trudged back down, arms crossed.

Melvin appeared at the top of the stairs, descending with a heavy expression. "Is it true? You followed a boy home?" he asked, voice tight. "What if it hadn't been Leonard? What could've happened?"

"Yes, I'm relieved it was him-your childhood friend-but still. Anything could've happened to you," he continued.

Gemma stepped closer, her tone gentler. "Sweetie, what made you do that? You had a project due Monday. The Auri I know would've said no immediately."

Melvin leaned in, his voice lower but firmer. "Is it the same boy who's been bothering you at school? Was it him?"

Aurora stayed silent, her mind spiraling as the night's events replayed again and again. The doubts, the shame, the confusion-all of it pounded against her resolve like rain against glass.

Finally, she spoke coldly, "It was a project with a deadline. I thought I could handle it. I was wrong. It was a mistake."

She turned and went upstairs, each step heavy with frustration.

Melvin exhaled sharply. "This isn't something we can brush off. She's fragile, Gemma, even if she doesn't realize it. Something happened tonight-something that shook her. What if she'd had an attack in front of him?"

Gemma reached for her phone, expression tired. "Hold on." She dialed quickly.

The line connected. "Char? Auri's acting strange. Did something happen there?"

Charlene's voice came through, confused. "I honestly don't know. I didn't hear any arguing. But... Leo's being cold too."

"Okay. I'll see you tomorrow," Gemma sighed.

"I hope so. Please cheer her up if you can. It's her first time visiting me, and she left upset."

"I'll try. Good night." Gemma ended the call.

Melvin stepped forward. "Well?"

"She's not sure either. Thinks they had an argument. Leo's cold now."

Melvin frowned. "Since when did our daughter start arguing with boys? She's never even liked them."

Gemma looked at him, eyes softening. "Think about it. She found her childhood best friend again. Her childhood lover, Melvin. She trusted him enough to go with him. That says something. Maybe-just maybe-he can help her heal."

Melvin's eyes darkened. "And if she does heal... then what? What about her memories? If she opens up to him, lets him in... everything might come back."

FLASHBACK - YEARS AGO

Blood. Screams. Sirens. They couldn't forget that night.

The hospital hallway was cold and too quiet. Gemma sat on the bench, trembling in Melvin's arms, her hands stained with Aurora's blood. He held her tightly, whispering useless words of comfort neither of them believed.

The operating room door opened. Dr. Nina stepped out, her face tight and weary.

"Doctor-please," Gemma pleaded, standing. "Tell me she's okay."

Dr. Nina exhaled slowly. "Her injuries are extensive. Physically... she's stable for now, but emotionally, what she experienced..." She paused, choosing her words with care. "It was... brutal. Too much for someone her age."

Melvin's jaw clenched. "But she'll wake up, right?"

"She's on the edge of consciousness. Her body is recovering, but her mind is trying to shut everything out. She's slipping into a dissociative coma. If we don't act quickly, she might not come back."

"No... please," Gemma whispered. "I can't lose another child."

Melvin's voice was urgent. "Is there anything you can do? Anything at all to help her forget?"

Dr. Nina looked between them. "There is... something. An experimental treatment. Neuroseptine-RX. It's not approved, but we've used it under compassionate protocols."

"What does it do?" Gemma asked.

"It targets the trauma-processing centers in the brain-blunts access to emotionally-charged memories and suppresses the neural pathways that lead to recall. In short, it creates a barrier."

Gemma blinked. "A barrier?"

"She won't remember what happened. Not unless that wall breaks."

Melvin frowned. "What breaks it?"

"Extreme emotional or physical intimacy. Especially if... she connects with someone on a deeply personal level."

Gemma's breath hitched. "You mean..."

"She'll still be capable of love," Dr. Nina said quietly, "but the path to it will be long. If that bond becomes physical before she's ready-before she's truly healed-everything could come crashing back."

"And if it does?" Melvin asked.

"Her brain might not be able to handle the surge. She could collapse. Seizures. Coma. Or worse. She could die."

Gemma pressed a hand over her mouth. Melvin just stared blankly.

"I'll give you a moment," Dr. Nina said gently and stepped back into the room.

They sat there in silence. Melvin kept consoling Gemma.

END OF FLASH BACK

"I-I don't know what to say. I'm scared," Gemma whispered.

Melvin pulled her into a hug, holding her tightly.

"Don't worry," he murmured. "She'll be fine. Things will work out."

UPSTAIRS

Aurora sat curled under the shower, the water cascading over her like a silent shield. She let it wash over her, hoping it could erase the memories, the touches, the ache.

She had come here to calm down-smashing things wasn't an option with her parents home. The water helped a little. But the more she remembered, the angrier she got.

Why had she gone with him?

What had gotten into her?

Was it trust... or just desperation for the project?

THE GRANDE RESIDENCE

Leonard stepped into the living room, where Charlene sat waiting.

He had heard Amaya's screams before he drove off earlier. Now, the house was heavy with tension.

"What has she turned into?" Leonard asked dryly.

"She's been like that since childhood. You know that," Charlene replied.

"Well, it's worse now. It's annoying-and dangerous," he said, voice flat.

Suddenly, Amaya came rushing down the stairs.

"Leo! Leo!!"

"I thought you were sleeping," Charlene muttered.

"Come on, let's leave! Let's go to your place. I hate it here," Amaya said, tugging at his arm.

Leonard didn't move. "Stop."

"Let's go! You came back for me, right? So let's go!" she stomped her foot, desperate.

"Maya..." Charlene whispered, tense.

Leonard's eyes narrowed. "Didn't I warn you not to run down the stairs?"

"I just... wanted to see you."

"I..."

"How old are you?"

"Le-"

"I've told you over and over, I don't hate you. Not telling you where I live doesn't mean I hate you. This-this behavior is the reason why. Is that clear, Amaya?"

She clung to his hand like her life depended on it.

"Let go."

Amaya hesitated, then slowly released his hand when she saw the finality in his expression.

Going upstairs with her walking behind him was a mistake he'd never make again.

"Go upstairs," he said, his voice stern.

"No, plea-"

A tear rolled down her cheek as she obeyed, climbing the stairs slowly, trembling.

Charlene sighed deeply.

"You're the only one who knows how to straighten her out," she said quietly.

"False," Leonard replied coldly. "You're just scared of upsetting her."

Without another word, he followed Amaya upstairs.

He found her curled up in bed, crying softly. As soon as he sat down beside her, she clung to him tightly.

"I'm sorry," she sobbed. "Please stay."

"Sleep," he said flatly, refusing to show any emotion.

"I want to see you when I wake up... or else I'll die," she whispered, eyes pleading.

He didn't respond.

That silence told her everything, he was angry.

She laid down immediately, still shaking, terrified he might leave.

Even in her sleep, she held onto him like her life depended on it.

A while later, her voice broke the silence.

"Is that girl your girlfriend?"

"No," he replied without hesitation.

"Then why were you trying to kiss her?"

"For fun."

She kept asking questions. He kept answering.

Eventually, she drifted off.

Leonard leaned back, needing something-anything-to take his mind off everything.

His phone beeped. He glanced at the screen and almost smiled. Something to kill the time.

Kim: Leo, baby please. I want us back.

Leonard: How desperate are you? I blocked you. Now you're texting me with another number?

Kim: I'll do anything.

Leonard: That's risky.

Kim: I'm willing to take any risk for you. Please, I miss you.

Kim: You used to adore me so much.

Leonard: I did?

Kim: Please... you're hurting me.

Leonard: Good to know. You cryin'?

A voice note followed.

"Leo, please... I swear, I've never been this crazy over anyone before. Please, I love you..."

He didn't reply. Just stared.

More messages followed.

One heart broken. That should calm him a little.
