Chapter Forty-Nine
ADRIAN
Adrian watched, barely breathing, as Enzo’s Light shone through Annabel while his flames licked at her body. Annabel screamed and screamed, his sisters weeping, his mother in his father’s arms.
‘Please, Annie,’ Santi whispered, holding her hand so tightly, even with Enzo’s magick blazing around him. ‘Please fight this, please come back to me.’
After a few more minutes, Enzo’s magick died down, the room encased in darkness again.
‘Is it done?’ his father demanded.
Enzo turned his eyes to Adrian, though, to Adrian’s horror, they were pained, sunken.
‘I can’t save her,’ he said quietly.
‘Why?’ Adrian demanded.
‘Because…because she’s already dead.’
