18. Trevor

Chapter eighteen

Trevor

I wiped the sweat from my brow as I strung another strand of twinkling fairy lights through the oak tree's branches. The early morning sun bathed the garden in a warm golden glow. Hero darted between my feet, his tiny tail wagging in excitement.

"Looks like someone's eager to help," Donovan chuckled, carefully arranging a vase of vibrant sunflowers on the rustic wooden table.

"He's not the only one who's eager." I took a deep breath, trying to calm the nerves in my stomach. "I just want everything to be perfect, you know?"

Donovan clapped me on the shoulder. "Relax, man. Amelia's going to love it. You two are meant for each other."

I couldn't help but smile. He was right. Amelia had burst into my life like a vibrant sunflower, bringing color and joy to my world when I needed it most. After years of struggling with the darkness of my past, she'd shown me that love and laughter could heal even the deepest wounds.

"Speaking of meant to be..." I turned to face Donovan, my heart full of gratitude for our long friendship. "I wanted to ask you something. Would you be my best man?"

Donovan's eyes widened before a grin spread across his face. "Of course, Trevor! I'd be honored."

We shared a brief hug, the weight of the moment settling between us. Donovan had been by my side through thick and thin, from our days in high school to my rocky transition back to civilian life. Having him stand with me as I started this new chapter felt right.

"Just don't forget your lines when you pop the question," Donovan teased, his eyes twinkling with mischief.

I groaned, running a hand through my hair. "Don't remind me. I've been practicing for weeks, but I still feel like I'm going to trip over my words."

"Here, pretend I'm Amelia." Donovan struck a pose, batting his eyelashes exaggeratedly. "Oh Trevor, my love, what did you want to ask me?"

Rolling my eyes, I couldn't help but laugh. "Very funny. But seriously, what if I mess it up?"

Donovan shook his head. "You won't. Just speak from the heart. Amelia loves you for who you are, not for some perfect speech."

I nodded, taking a deep breath. He was right. Amelia and I had been through so much together. We'd learned to embrace each other's imperfections and differences and find strength in our love.

A sudden commotion caught our attention. Hero had tangled himself in a strand of fairy lights, yipping and spinning in circles as he tried to free himself.

"Hero, no!" I lunged forward, trying to untangle the little troublemaker. Donovan joined in, both of us fumbling with the delicate lights as Hero wriggled and yapped.

"Stop, Hero! You're making it worse." Donovan's voice boomed out, trying to control the situation. The tiny chihuahua only seemed to panic more at the sound, his yapping increasing in intensity.

"Alright, let's not panic. Hero, sit!" I commanded.

With a whimper, Hero finally stilled, allowing us to untangle the chaotic mess that had become of the fairy lights. Once free, Hero trotted off, tail wagging as if he hadn't just caused total mayhem.

Donovan and I sighed in relief before we burst into laughter, the tension from earlier dispelled by Hero's antics.

"Man, that dog..." Donovan started, wiping his brow.

"I know, I know," I shook my head, chuckling. "But he’s worth all the trouble."

Finishing up with the fairy lights, I shot Donovan a grateful look. "I'd better go change before I meet Amelia. Appreciate the pep talk."

He gave me a mock salute. "Good luck, soldier."

I gazed around the garden, taking in the twinkling lights, the fragrant flowers, and the love that had gone into every detail. Yes, tonight would be the night I'd ask Amelia to spend forever with me.

I headed to my apartment to shower and change clothes. I had told Amelia that we needed to talk about the butterfly release and check on them, and then I had a surprise, but she had no idea what I was planning.

After getting dressed, I made my way to the butterfly enclosure, my heart fluttering in my chest like the delicate wings of the creatures we had nurtured together. Amelia stood inside, her face aglow with wonder as she gazed at the rows of cocoons, each holding the promise of new life.

"They're almost ready," she whispered, her voice filled with awe. "Can you believe it, Trevor? They'll be dancing through the sky in just over a week."

I stepped closer, my shoulder brushing against hers. "It's incredible. To think that we've been a part of their journey, from caterpillars to becoming beautiful butterflies."

Amelia turned to me, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Speaking of dancing, I talked to Grace about the butterfly ball. She's absolutely thrilled to help out. You should have seen her, Trevor. She was practically buzzing with ideas."

I chuckled, picturing the town's resident gossip queen in one of her signature elaborate hats, holding court at the dance. "I can imagine. Grace never does anything halfway, does she?"

"No, she certainly doesn't." Amelia's laughter mingled with mine, filling the enclosure with warmth. "But you know, I'm glad she's so enthusiastic. The whole town is coming together to celebrate these little miracles."

I reached for her hand, intertwining our fingers. "Amelia, there's something I want to show you."

Her eyes met mine, curiosity dancing in their depths. "What is it, Trevor?"

"It's a surprise." I tugged gently on her hand, leading her out of the enclosure and towards the garden.

As we walked hand in hand, I felt my heart racing. This was the moment I had been planning for, the moment that would change our lives forever.

I thought back to the journey that had brought us here - the laughter, the tears, the challenges we had faced together. Every step, every obstacle, had only made us stronger.

As I led Amelia towards the fairy-lit garden with the ring in my pocket, I knew with unshakable certainty that she was the one I wanted to spend the rest of my days with.

Just as we reached the edge of the garden, just as I opened my mouth to reveal the surprise, my phone blared to life, shattering the magic of the moment.

I froze, my heart plummeting as I recognized the ringtone reserved for emergency calls from the fire station.

With a sinking feeling in my gut, I reached for my phone.

The fire chief's gruff voice crackled through the phone, his words hitting me like a physical blow. "Trevor, we've got a massive fire in the neighboring town. All hands on deck. We need you here ASAP."

I closed my eyes, my stomach dropping as the reality of the situation sank in. "How bad is it, Chief?"

"It's a big one, son. It could take up to five days to fully contain and extinguish. I'm sorry to call you in like this, but we need every firefighter we've got."

Five days. The words echoed in my mind, a heavy weight settling on my chest. Five days away from Amelia, away from the life we were building together.

I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. "I understand, Chief. I'll be there as soon as I can."

As I hung up the phone, I turned to face Amelia, my heart heavy with the words I knew I had to say.

"Amelia, I..." My voice faltered, the regret thick in my throat. "There's a massive fire in the neighboring town. They need me there. I have to go."

I watched as understanding dawned in her eyes, followed by a flicker of fear that she quickly tried to hide. "Of course, Trevor. They need you. Your job is important."

Her immediate support and unwavering belief in me only reinforced what I already knew in my heart—that she was the perfect partner for me, the one I wanted to face every challenge with.

"I'm so sorry. This isn't how I wanted tonight to go." I pulled her close, wrapping my arms around her. The intensity of the moment struck me, her slight trembling against my chest a testament to her fear for my safety. I wanted to reassure her, to promise that everything would be okay, but the words stuck in my throat.

"Trevor, please be careful," she whispered, her voice muffled against my shirt. "I... I need you to come back to me."

Her plea nearly broke my composure, filling me with a surge of love and determination. I knew, without a doubt, that I would move heaven and earth to make it back to her.

I tilted her chin up, our gazes locking. "I will, Amelia. I promise. Nothing will keep me from coming back to you."

With that, I leaned in, capturing her lips in a deep, passionate kiss. I poured every ounce of my unspoken words and intentions into that kiss, trying to convey all the love and longing I felt for her.

As I reluctantly pulled away, I silently vowed to return to her to finish what I had started. The weight of the ring box in my pocket was a tangible reminder of my promise, which I intended to keep no matter what.

I brushed a stray tear from her cheek, offering a small smile. "I'll be back before you know it, Amelia."

She nodded a flicker of curiosity in her eyes despite the gravity of the moment. "I'll hold you to that, Phillips."

With one last lingering look, I turned and walked away, my heart torn between my duty and my desire to stay with her. But I knew that to build the future I envisioned with Amelia, I had to ensure the safety of those who needed me.
