Chapter 11
CHAPTER ELEVEN
NOVA
My eyes widen as I step out of Liam's sleek black SUV, drinking in the breathtaking view. The cabin stands before us, a rustic haven nestled among towering pines. The scent of fresh pine and wildflowers fills my lungs, a stark contrast to the city's smog we left behind.
"What do you think?" Liam asks, a hint of nervousness in his voice.
"It's... incredible," I breathe, unable to hide my awe. The cabin's wooden exterior gleams in the afternoon sun, its large windows reflecting the surrounding forest. A stone chimney rises from the slanted roof, promising cozy nights by the fire.
Liam grabs our bags from the trunk, and I follow him up the weathered wooden steps to the front porch. The boards creak beneath our feet, adding to the cabin's charm. As Liam fumbles with the key, I lean against the railing, taking in the view of the clearing and the distant mountains.
"Welcome to my little slice of paradise," Liam says, pushing open the heavy wooden door.
I step inside, and my breath catches. The interior is even more beautiful than I imagined. Exposed wooden beams crisscross the ceiling, and a massive stone fireplace dominates one wall. Plush leather furniture is arranged around a rustic coffee table, and colorful throw pillows add splashes of warmth to the space.
"This is amazing, Liam," I say, running my hand along the back of a buttery-soft leather armchair. "I can't believe you have a place like this."
He shrugs, a small smile playing on his lips. "Everyone needs an escape sometimes. Even tech geniuses."
As Liam carries our bags to the bedroom, I wander around the main living area. Expansive windows offer a stunning view of the forest, and I can almost feel the tension melting from my shoulders. This weekend getaway is exactly what we need.
But as I gaze out at the serene landscape, a familiar knot of guilt tightens in my stomach. I'm here under false pretenses, pretending to be someone I'm not. The weight of my deception presses down on me, threatening to shatter this perfect moment.
"Hey, you okay?" Liam's voice startles me from my thoughts. He's standing in the doorway to the bedroom, concern etched on his face.
I force a smile. "Yeah, just... taking it all in. It's so peaceful here."
Liam crosses the room and wraps his arms around me from behind. I lean into his embrace, savoring the warmth of his body against mine.
"I'm glad you like it," he murmurs, his breath tickling my ear. "I've wanted to bring you here for a while."
I turn in his arms, meeting his gaze. The tenderness in his eyes makes my heart ache. "Thank you for sharing this with me," I say softly.
Liam leans in, his lips brushing mine in a gentle kiss. As I melt into the kiss, a part of me wonders how long I can keep up this charade. How long will it be before the truth comes crashing down around us?
As we break apart, Liam's stomach growls loudly, breaking the tension. We both burst out laughing.
"I guess someone's hungry," I tease, poking his stomach.
Liam grins sheepishly. "What do you say we unpack and then have a little picnic? I promised you a proper cabin experience, after all."
I nod, grateful for the distraction. "Sounds perfect."
As we head to the bedroom to unpack, I can't help but feel a mix of excitement and dread. This weekend has the potential to be amazing, but it's also fraught with danger. One wrong move, one slip of the tongue, and everything could come unraveled.
Clothes and toiletries put away, we step out onto the trail, the earthy scent of pine and damp soil filling my lungs. Liam's hand finds mine, his fingers intertwining with my own. The warmth of his touch sends a shiver through me, a mix of excitement and guilt.
"Ready for an adventure?" Liam asks, his eyes sparkling with boyish enthusiasm.
I can't help but grin. "Lead the way, mountain man."
We set off down the winding path, sunlight filtering through the canopy above. The crunch of leaves and twigs under our feet creates a soothing rhythm. I watch Liam as he points out various plants and trees, his face lit up with genuine joy.
"Look at this," he says, crouching down to examine a cluster of vibrant mushrooms. "Aren't they incredible?"
I kneel beside him, our shoulders touching. "They're beautiful. I never knew you were such a nature nerd."
Liam chuckles, the sound warming my heart. "There's a lot you don't know about me, Nova Addison."
If only you knew how true that is , I think, pushing down the swell of guilt.
We continue our hike, the trail gradually sloping upward. Liam's hand rests on the small of my back as he helps me over a fallen log. His touch lingers, sending a jolt of electricity through my body.
"Careful," he murmurs, his breath hot against my ear.
I turn to face him, our bodies close. For a moment, I forget about my mission, about the lies. All I see is Liam—kind, brilliant Liam—looking at me like I'm the most precious thing in the world.
The moment passes, and we press on. The trees thin out, revealing a breathtaking view of the lake below. The water sparkles like diamonds in the afternoon sun.
"Wow," I breathe, taking in the sight.
Liam wraps his arms around me from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder. "Beautiful, isn't it?"
I lean back into his embrace, savoring the feeling of safety and comfort. "It's perfect."
We make our way down to the lakeshore, where Liam pulls out a picnic blanket and an array of snacks from his backpack. We settle on the soft grass, the gentle lapping of waves providing a soothing backdrop.
As we eat, we talk and laugh, sharing stories and dreams. Liam's eyes crinkle at the corners when he smiles, and I find myself memorizing every detail of his face.
"I'm so glad you're here, Nova," Liam says softly, reaching out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind my ear.
My heart swells with affection, even as guilt pulses through me. "Me too," I whisper, meaning it more than he could ever know.
After we finish eating, we walk along the water's edge, our shoes dangling from our hands. The cool water laps at our feet, and I can't resist splashing Liam playfully.
He gasps in mock outrage. "Oh, you're in for it now!"
Before I can react, he scoops me up in his arms and wades deeper into the lake. I squeal with laughter, clinging to his neck.
"Don't you dare drop me, Liam Novak!"
His eyes twinkle mischievously. "Wouldn't dream of it."
We stay like that for a moment, our faces inches apart. The urge to kiss him is overwhelming, but I hold back, acutely aware of the secrets between us.
As the sun begins to set, casting a golden glow over the lake, we make our way back to the cabin. My body aches pleasantly from the day's activities, and a sense of contentment washes over me.
Liam's hand finds mine once again, and I intertwine our fingers, pushing away the nagging voice in my head. For now, I'll let myself enjoy this moment, this connection, even if it's built on a foundation of lies.
The cabin's dining area glows with warmth as I light the last candle on the table. Liam's outdone himself, transforming the rustic space into something magical. Soft jazz floats from hidden speakers, mingling with the crackle of the fireplace.
"This looks amazing," I say, taking in the spread before us. “I thought you said you weren’t much of a foodie.” Liam's managed to whip up a gourmet meal despite our limited supplies—herb-crusted salmon, roasted vegetables, and a bottle of red wine that probably costs more than my rent.
He pulls out my chair, his fingers brushing my shoulder as I sit. "I'm glad you like it. I wanted tonight to be special."
My heart swells at his thoughtfulness. God, he's so wonderful. How can I do this to him?
We dig in, and I can't help but moan at the first bite. "This is incredible. Where'd you learn to cook like this?"
Liam chuckles, a faint blush coloring his cheeks. "My sister, actually. She insisted I learn some basic skills so I wouldn't live on takeout and frozen dinners."
"Smart woman," I tease, taking a sip of wine. It's rich and velvety, warming me from the inside out.
"You know," Liam says, reaching across the table to take my hand, "I've never felt this comfortable with anyone before. It's like... I can be myself with you."
His thumb traces circles on my skin, sending shivers up my arm. I meet his gaze, seeing the warmth and affection there. My chest tightens. "I feel the same way," I admit, and it's not a lie. Despite everything, despite the secrets between us, I've never felt more seen or understood.
We linger over dessert—a decadent chocolate mousse that Liam somehow conjured up. The fire has died down to glowing embers, casting a soft, intimate light over the room. Liam's eyes shine in the candlelight, and I find myself lost in them.
This feels so right, so perfect. I wish things were different. I wish I could stay in this moment forever, without the weight of my lies hanging over us.
The cabin's bedroom is bathed in soft moonlight, casting a romantic glow on the large, comfortable bed where we're entwined. Our bodies move in sync, exploring each other with a hunger that's both tender and passionate. The night air is filled with the scent of pine from the forest outside, mixed with the intoxicating perfume of our desire.
Liam's hands roam my body, his touch gentle yet insistent. His fingers trace the curve of my hip, sending shivers down my spine. I can feel the heat of his body, the hard planes of his chest against my softness. His lips find mine in a slow, deep kiss that leaves me breathless.
"Nova," he murmurs against my skin, his voice husky with need. The sound of my name on his lips sends a thrill through me. I can hear the emotion in his voice, the depth of feeling that matches my own.
I love him. I love him so much it hurts. The thought echoes in my mind, a bittersweet symphony. Every touch, every kiss is a reminder of the lie I'm living. How can I keep lying to him? How can I tell him the truth?
I push the thoughts away, focusing on the here and now. On the man who's making me feel things I've never felt before. I run my hands over his back, feeling the muscles ripple under my touch. His skin is warm, slightly damp with sweat. I can taste the salt on his skin as I kiss my way down his neck.
Liam groans, his hands tightening on my waist. "God, Nova," he breathes, his hips moving against mine. I can feel his arousal, hard and insistent against my thigh. I want him. I want this.
I gaze into Liam's eyes, desire burning between us. "I want you," I whisper. "All of you, no barriers. I’m clean."
He cups my face, his touch electric. "Are you sure? No protection?"
I nod, certain. "I'm on birth control. I want to feel everything."
Liam's eyes darken with lust as he pulls me closer. "I want that too. So much. I’m clean too."
Our lips crash together in a searing kiss, sealing our decision. There's no turning back now, and I don't want to. I want Liam, completely and utterly, with nothing between us.
I guide him inside me, our bodies joining in a slow, sensual dance. The feel of him filling me is exquisite, a mix of pleasure and pain that makes me gasp. He stills, giving me a moment to adjust before starting to move.
Our bodies move together, finding a rhythm that's as natural as breathing. The sound of our mingled breaths, the soft slap of skin on skin, the wet sound of our bodies joining is a symphony of desire. I can feel the tension building inside me, a coil of pleasure that's winding tighter and tighter.
Liam's breath hitches, his movements becoming more erratic. "Fuck, Nova," he groans, his face a mask of concentration. "I'm close."
His words send me over the edge. I cry out, my body convulsing around his as I come. Liam follows me over, his body tensing before he collapses on top of me, spent.
We lie there for a moment, panting, our heartbeats slowly returning to normal. Liam rolls off me, pulling me into his arms. I snuggle against him, my head on his chest, listening to the now steady beat of his heart.
I close my eyes, letting the sound of Liam's breathing lull me into a peaceful sleep. But even as I drift off, I know that I can't keep living this lie. I need to tell Liam the truth. I just don't know how.
I wake to morning light filtering through the windows. Liam's warm body presses against mine, his chest rising and falling steadily. Pine and passion scent the air.
My heart swells as I gaze at his face, but guilt twists inside me. I trace his features, memorizing them. How did I fall so deep?
I wish this moment could last , I think, fighting tears. How will he react to the truth?
Liam stirs, blue eyes opening. He smiles sleepily, pulling me close.
"Morning, beautiful," he murmurs, kissing me softly. I melt into him, savoring the tenderness.
"Hey," I whisper back, forcing a smile. "Sleep well?"
"Better than in years," Liam says, nuzzling me. "Waking up to you feels like a dream. I want this forever."
His words cut deep. I want it too, but how can it last when we're built on lies?
Liam's touch raises goosebumps. "Stay in bed longer?" he suggests mischievously.
I laugh. "Tempting, but you promised pancakes."
"Can't disappoint my lady," he chuckles.
As we leave the bed, my secret threatens to swallow me. The deeper we connect, the more devastating the truth will be.
