Chapter 22
CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
NOVA
I wake to the gentle caress of sunlight on my face, filtering through the sheer curtains of the penthouse. The city sprawls below, a tapestry of glass and steel, but my world narrows to the man sleeping beside me. Liam's chest rises and falls in a steady rhythm, his face relaxed in slumber. My heart swells with an emotion so pure it takes my breath away.
I prop myself up on one elbow, drinking in the sight of him. The sharp angles of his jaw, softened in sleep. The slight furrow between his brows, a remnant of yesterday's intense coding session. My fingers itch to smooth it away, but I resist, not wanting to wake him just yet.
A car horn blares in the distance, and Liam stirs. His eyes flutter open, unfocused at first, then locking onto mine. A slow, sleepy smile spreads across his face, making my insides melt.
"Morning, beautiful," he murmurs, voice rough with sleep.
I lean in, pressing a soft kiss to his lips. "Morning, handsome."
We linger in bed for a few moments, trading lazy kisses and gentle caresses. It's a bubble of perfection I wish we could stay in forever, but the real world beckons.
With a reluctant sigh, we drag ourselves out of bed. I slip on one of Liam's oversized t-shirts, reveling in the lingering scent of his cologne. He pulls on a pair of sweatpants, leaving his chest bare. The sight of his toned muscles never fails to make my pulse quicken.
We move to the kitchen, a dance of familiarity and comfort. I start the coffee maker while Liam retrieves eggs and bacon from the fridge. The sizzle of bacon hitting the pan fills the air, mingling with the rich aroma of brewing coffee.
"So, what's on the agenda today, Mr. CEO?" I ask, hip-checking him playfully as I reach for mugs.
Liam chuckles, flipping the bacon with practiced ease. "Oh, you know, just the usual. Revolutionizing quantum computing, fending off corporate saboteurs, maybe squeeze in a game of Tetris if I'm feeling wild."
I snort, pouring us each a steaming cup of coffee. "Tetris? Living on the edge there, Novak."
He grins, that boyish smile that never fails to make my heart skip a beat. "What can I say? I'm a rebel at heart."
I hand him his coffee, our fingers brushing. Even that small contact sends a shiver down my spine. "Your secret's safe with me, rebel boy."
We move around each other with practiced ease, a perfectly choreographed routine. Liam plates the bacon while I whip up some scrambled eggs. The domesticity of it all hits me suddenly, a warmth blooming in my chest. This is everything I never knew I wanted.
I step into QuantumLeap's sleek headquarters, the office buzzes with a sense of excitement and purpose thrumming through the air. As Liam's assistant, I feel a mix of pride and anticipation for the RealityPlus global launch. Staying on in this role wasn't an easy decision, but after everything we’ve been through, I realized that I’m more than just a reporter chasing a story. This work, this team—it's become a part of me. And Liam? He’s someone I want to build a future with, not tear down.
Liam looks up from his desk as I approach, his blue eyes lighting up. "Morning, Nova. Ready for today's schedule?"
I nod, setting down my bag and pulling out my tablet. "Absolutely. I've prepared the agenda for the RealityPlus launch meeting and organized your notes from yesterday's brainstorming session."
We dive into work, our professional rhythm in perfect sync. Liam reviews the meeting agenda while I pull up the latest prototype data on my tablet. As I lean in to show him a key point, our shoulders brush, sending a little spark through me. I push the feeling aside, focusing on the task at hand.
"I've highlighted the areas where we need to address potential investor concerns," I say, pointing to a section of my notes. "It could make a significant difference in their confidence levels."
Liam's eyes widen. "Excellent work, Nova. That's precisely what we need to focus on." He starts jotting down additional points, and I watch, admiring his quick thinking and dedication.
Hours fly by as we prepare for the launch. I coordinate with various departments, compile reports, and assist Liam in refining his presentation. It's exhilarating to be part of such a groundbreaking project, even if my role is more behind-the-scenes.
"Nova, take a look at this," Liam calls, excitement coloring his voice. I move closer, peering at his screen. He's made some adjustments to the presentation, and the results are stunning. The potential of RealityPlus is showcased more clearly than ever.
"This is incredible, Liam," I say, genuinely impressed.
He smiles, appreciation evident in his eyes. "Couldn't have pulled it all together without your organizational skills and insight, Nova."
Warmth blooms in my chest at his words. This is more than just professional success; it's a testament to how far we've come in our working relationship. I nod, returning his smile. "We make a great team."
Liam agrees with a soft, "Indeed" before we turn back to our work. The rest of the day passes in a whirlwind of productivity. As the sun begins to set, painting the sky in brilliant oranges and pinks visible through the floor-to-ceiling windows, I start organizing the day's work and preparing for tomorrow.
"I think we've covered everything for today," I announce, checking off the last item on our to-do list.
Liam nods, stretching in his chair. "Agreed. Great work today, Nova."
"Nova, wait. There's something I'd like to show you, if you have a moment."
"Of course," I reply, trying to keep my voice casual. "Lead the way."
I step onto the rooftop terrace, the cool breeze a welcome relief after hours cooped up inside. Liam follows, his hand resting lightly on the small of my back. The gesture sends a shiver through me, and I lean into his touch.
The city stretches out before us, a glittering tapestry of lights against the darkening sky. I breathe deeply, inhaling the crisp evening air tinged with the faint scent of blooming flowers from the terrace garden.
"God, it's beautiful up here," I murmur, drinking in the view.
Liam nods, guiding me to a cozy seating area. "It's my favorite spot to clear my head."
We settle onto a plush loveseat, our bodies naturally gravitating toward each other. Liam's arm drapes around my shoulders, and I nestle into his side, savoring his warmth.
For a moment, we sit in comfortable silence. The distant hum of traffic and the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze create a soothing backdrop. I close my eyes, letting the tension of the day melt away.
When I open them again, I find Liam watching me, his blue eyes soft with affection. My heart swells, and a smile spreads across my face. God, how did I get so lucky?
"What?" Liam asks, his lips quirking up in amusement.
I reach up, tracing the line of his jaw with my fingertips. "Just thinking about how happy you make me."
His expression softens further, and he leans in, pressing a tender kiss to my lips. It's gentle, unhurried, a stark contrast to our usual passionate encounters. When we part, he rests his forehead against mine.
"You know," he says, his voice thoughtful, "I never imagined I'd have this. Someone to share my life with, to really understand me."
I nod, understanding completely. "I know what you mean. For so long, I was focused on my career, on proving myself. I didn't think there was room for anything else."
Liam chuckles softly. "Look at us now."
"Yeah," I agree, grinning. "Who would've thought?"
We fall into easy conversation, talking about our hopes and dreams for the future. It's not just about work anymore – though that's still important to both of us. We discuss travel plans, the idea of maybe getting a place together someday. Each shared dream feels like a promise, solidifying the bond between us.
As we talk, I can't help but marvel at how far we've come. From adversaries to lovers, from secrets and lies to this—open, honest communication and unwavering support. It hasn't been an easy journey, but God, it's been worth it.
The office buzzes with excitement as we gather to celebrate our successful preparation for the RealityPlus launch. Laughter and animated chatter fill the air, a stark contrast to the usual focused silence. I can't help but smile as I look around at my colleagues—no, my friends.
Daniel's deep belly laugh echoes across the room as he regales a group with some outrageous story, his hands waving dramatically. Vitoria, usually so composed, giggles uncontrollably at his antics. Even the usually stoic dev team is letting loose, clinking glasses and swapping jokes.
My gaze finds Liam across the room, and my heart swells. He's talking animatedly with a group of engineers, his blue eyes bright with enthusiasm. As if sensing my attention, he looks up, meeting my eyes. A soft smile spreads across his face, and I feel a warmth bloom in my chest.
Liam excuses himself and makes his way over to me, weaving through the crowd. "Having fun?" he asks, his voice low and intimate despite the noise around us.
"More than I ever thought possible at a work event," I admit with a grin. "Who knew quantum computing could be so exciting?"
He chuckles, the sound sending a pleasant shiver down my spine. "Well, I've always found it thrilling, but I'm glad you're enjoying yourself too."
Liam clears his throat, drawing my attention back to him. "I think it's time for a toast," he says, a hint of nervousness in his voice that only I would notice.
I nod, and we make our way to the front of the room. Liam taps his glass with a spoon, the clear ring cutting through the chatter. The room gradually falls silent, all eyes turning to us.
Liam raises his glass. "To QuantumLeap, and to the future," he says, his voice strong and confident. "We've accomplished something incredible here, and it's all thanks to the brilliant minds in this room."
I feel a surge of pride and affection. "And to the people who make it all possible," I add, my voice thick with emotion. "To friendship, teamwork, and pushing the boundaries of what's possible."
A chorus of cheers erupts as everyone raises their glasses. As I look around at the smiling faces, I'm struck by how much this place, these people, have come to mean to me. It's more than just a job now—it's a home.
The rest of the day passes in a whirlwind of productivity. As the sun begins to set, painting the sky in brilliant oranges and pinks visible through the spacious windows, I start organizing the day's work and preparing for tomorrow.
"I think we've covered everything for today," I announce, checking off the last item on our to-do list.
Liam nods, stretching in his chair. "Agreed. Great work today, Nova."
I gather my things, my heart fluttering with anticipation as Liam suggests we call it a day. "Want to grab dinner?" he asks, his blue eyes twinkling. I nod, trying to keep my excitement in check. We leave the office together, our shoulders brushing as we walk to the elevator. The tension between us is palpable, electric.
As we step out into the cool evening air, Liam turns to me. "Let's go home. I could whip up something quick if you'd like." His invitation sends a thrill through me. I agree, perhaps a bit too eagerly, and soon we're in his sleek car, driving through the city streets.
