EPILOGUE
NOVA
5 YEARS LATER
I stand in the bustling auditorium of QuantumLeap, my heart racing with a mix of excitement and nostalgia. Five years have passed since I first walked through these doors as an undercover journalist, determined to expose Liam Novak. Now, I'm here as his wife, partner, and mother of our child.
The room hums with anticipation. Tech journalists and industry bigwigs crowd the seats, eager for the unveiling of our latest VR project. I scan the crowd, recognizing familiar faces from my own tech journalism circles. It's surreal to be on this side of the stage now.
My gaze lands on Liam, standing off to the side with our three-year-old daughter, Ela. He's crouched down, explaining something to her with animated gestures. Ela's eyes are wide with wonder, hanging on every word. The sight makes my chest tighten with emotion.
I remember a time when Liam was guarded, his brilliant mind hidden behind walls of mistrust. Now, watching him with our daughter, I see a man transformed. He's still intense and driven, but there's a softness to him that only Ela and I get to see.
"Mommy!" Ela spots me and breaks free from Liam, running towards me with her arms outstretched. I scoop her up, inhaling the scent of her strawberry shampoo.
"Hey, munchkin. Ready for Daddy's big show?"
She nods enthusiastically. "Daddy says we're gonna see stars!"
I laugh, catching Liam's eye as he approaches. "Did he now? Well, your daddy does know how to put on a spectacle."
Liam reaches us, his hand settling on the small of my back. "I was telling her about the celestial navigation feature," he explains, a hint of defensiveness in his tone.
"Relax, genius." I lean in to kiss his cheek. "She'll love it, stars or no stars."
He visibly relaxes, a small smile playing at the corners of his mouth. It's these moments that remind me how far we've come. The trust between us, hard-won and fiercely protected, is the foundation of everything we've built.
"You ready?" I ask, searching his face for any signs of pre-show jitters.
Liam nods, his eyes bright with anticipation. "This is going to change everything, Nova. VR education will never be the same after today."
I believe him. QuantumLeap has come a long way from the days of corporate espionage and sabotage attempts. Under our joint leadership, it's become a beacon of ethical innovation in the tech world.
"Nova!" A familiar voice cuts through the crowd. I turn to see Caleb and Vitoria, Liam’s best friend and his small sister now happily married, waving as they approach.
"Caleb, Vitoria, glad you guys could make it." I greet him warmly, remembering the rocky path that led us here. From adversaries to allies, our shared commitment to transparency in tech has forged an unlikely friendship.
"Wouldn't miss it for the world," Vitoria replies, giving Ela a little wave. "This little one going to join the family business?"
Liam and I exchange a look. "We're keeping our options open," I say diplomatically. "Right now, she's more interested in being a unicorn princess astronaut."
Caleb laughs. "Sounds like she's got her mother's ambition and her father's imagination. Watch out, world."
As Caleb and Vitoria move on to greet other attendees, I feel a surge of pride. This is the world we've created for our daughter—one where innovation and ethics go hand in hand, where the pursuit of knowledge is tempered by a commitment to doing what's right.
Liam squeezes my hand, drawing my attention back to him. "It's almost time," he says, a hint of nervousness creeping into his voice.
I give his hand a reassuring squeeze back. "You've got this. Go show them what the future looks like."
He nods, taking a deep breath. As he turns to head backstage, Ela calls out, "Good luck, Daddy! Show them the stars!"
Liam's face breaks into a wide grin, all traces of nervousness gone. He blows us both a kiss before disappearing behind the curtain.
I find my seat in the front row, settling Ela on my lap. As the lights dim and the QuantumLeap logo flashes across the giant screen, I'm struck by a wave of gratitude. Five years ago, I never could have imagined this life. The journey from deception to trust, from hostility to partnership, has been filled with challenges and triumphs.
But as I sit here, our daughter in my arms, waiting for my husband to unveil our latest contribution to the tech world, I know one thing for certain: every twist and turn was worth it. We've created something beautiful—not just in our work, but in our life together. And as the curtain rises and Liam steps out to thunderous applause, I can't help but think that the best is yet to come.
