Chapter 64

Chapter Sixty-Four

Seth

Standing with Kash in the hospital waiting room, I stare at the doors where the doctors are working on Mila. I can’t believe she took a bullet for him.

When I heard Kash say Bri’s name, I immediately called the police.

Adding them onto a three-way call, I gave them Kash’s address, and now the police no doubt have the entire conversation as well as Bri’s confession.

I feel like shit for all the times I gave him hell about her, and how he made her crazy.

I had no idea she was actually mentally ill.

My heart stopped when I heard the first gunshot go off.

I was outside his place and ran in at the same time as Cassie and the other officers.

Kash was burrowed on the floor with Mila in his arms, his body covering hers, and Bri was getting ready to fire again.

Time slowed down as I thought I was about to watch my brother die.

Cassie yelled at her to drop the weapon, but when she turned the gun toward the police, Cassie did what she had to.

She opened fire and shot Bri. I watched my brother fall apart as they loaded Mila into an ambulance, him covered in her blood.

He refused to leave her side even though he couldn’t walk properly.

He hobbled out beside the stretcher, wincing in pain with each step he took. When his eyes met mine, he looked over his shoulder where the police were evaluating Bri. “I think she broke my leg.”

Hooking his arm around my shoulder, I helped him get into the ambulance and started making calls. Everyone is in the waiting room now, except Mila’s parents.

Kash’s leg is fractured in two spots, and he should be resting, but he refuses to stay in a room. He’s currently standing at the nurses’ station, arguing with them, and saying Mila is his wife and demanding an update. I hate hospitals.

“Sir, I can’t give you an update without proof of that. When her parents get here, you can ask them. I’m sorry, I can’t help you.”

“She’s my wife!” he shouts, showing her the ring on his finger.

“Sir, if you keep shouting, I’m going to have security make you leave.”

Kash pushes away from the nurses’ window, slightly swaying on his crutches then turns to me with wild eyes. “Where’s Emma? She went back to grab my wallet, right?”

Emma pushes through the door at that moment with Mila’s parents and sister in tow. Before he can even say anything, her dad punches Kash. “If she dies, this is on you.” Shaking out his fist, he swears.

My hand grabs Kash as he stumbles. I know Kash can take a hit, but as he flexes his jaw, I have no doubt that hurt in more than one way.

Emma shoves Mila’s dad, glaring at him. “Do not ever touch my son again. Do you understand me? It is not Kash’s fault. He’s just as much a victim as she is.”

Willa doesn’t say anything; instead, she brushes past, heading for the nurses’ station.

Grabbing his wallet from Emma, Kash turns and hobbles toward the nurses again. He squeezes his large body next to Willa. I watch with bated breath as he digs through it and pulls out a piece of paper. Kash unfolds it, then slams it on the counter. “There. Now tell me how my fucking wife is doing!”

We watch as Willa picks up the paper and covers her mouth. Giving Kash a look, she pinches her nose and says, “We’re going to talk about this.”

“There’s nothing to talk about. They’re getting it annulled as soon as I can get her away from him,” her dad spits out.

Kash peels the paper from Willa’s hand, tucking it safely into his wallet again like it’s something to protect. I have no doubt if Mila’s dad got ahold of it, he’d likely tear it to pieces. Somehow, the crazy bastard managed to marry Mila in the short time they were gone.

“There will be no divorce.” He glares at her dad, then turns back to the nurse, his expression softening a little. “Can you please tell me how she is, please. I’m begging you.”

Sighing, the nurse looks between the three of them and checks on her computer. “She came in with an upper body gunshot and is still in surgery. They should be finished soon. Now please sit down. This is a hospital and you are not the only people with loved ones here.”

Kash nods, but sighs. “Thank you.” Turning, he uses his crutches to walk back to a seat.

Emma meets him part way and helps him into a chair.

We sit in a divided waiting room, and no one speaks.

Emma and Kash are murmuring to each other.

His gaze is directed on the door, but he hands Emma his phone, and I watch as she swipes through something.

Atlas and Cora are sitting with the Morgans, Mara and Rhett at their side. Rhett has his arm around Mara, her expression pained. It makes me wonder if what they say about twins feeling each other’s pain and emotions is true. She’s clutching her shoulder, as if she’s the one who was hurt.

I watch everyone with someone and let my mind wander to my person. Looking at the lily tattoo on my arm, I think about the last time I saw her, and how scared she was. She'd be in her twenties now, same as us. Getting married and settling down. Life is so fucking unfair.

The door opens, and a nurse calls Mila’s name. “Family of Mila Morgan.”

“Malone,” Kash automatically corrects, earning a death glare from her dad.

“The doctor will be out in a moment to talk to you if you want to come to our family room.” She ushers Kash, along with Mila’s parents and sister, into a small glass room.

A moment later, a doctor walks in and starts talking to them.

I can’t hear what he’s saying, but when I see everyone’s concerned expressions turn to relief, I know there’s some good news.

Then Kash looks at everyone, takes a breath, and opens his mouth. I see his lips moving, no doubt asking the doctor a question. He checks the tablet in his hands, then nods in response. Whatever he says causes two things to happen. One, Kash cries with relief and smiles, getting a hug from Emma.

And second? Mila’s dad turns a violent shade of red, then he hits Kash again. Her mom and sister cover their mouths and watch as Kash falls to the ground out cold.

What the hell happened now?
