Epilogue

Amelia

2 years later

The air was thick with anticipation as sweat trickled down my forehead, stinging my eyes. My heart raced wildly in my chest, and I couldn't help but curse the timing of it all. Fall in Vermont had cast a beautiful spell on Moonridge, and here I was—confined to a sterile delivery room.

“Ames, you're doing great. We already have our boy. I know you can do this, just one more big push,” Teddy's voice encouraged me with a tender mixture of authority and warmth that only he could master.

I glanced in the corner of the room, the nurses were assessing my son as he waled at them.

“I already did this once,” I said, through gritted teeth. “You push this one out.”

He chuckled. “I would if I could.” He kissed me on my sweat drenched forehead and held onto my hand. He gave it a reassuring squeeze as I mustered every ounce of strength left in me for that final push.

“1…2…3…push!” the doctor counted, and I clenched my teeth, bearing down with the force of a tidal wave. One breath later, my ears were filled with the sweetest sound I'd ever heard—the cries of our newborn twins.

“Congratulations! You have a son and a daughter,” the nurse declared, wrapping them in soft blankets and placing them gently into our arms. Our gazes locked, tears brimmed in Teddy's blue eyes—a rare sight that melted my heart.

“Amelia, they're beautiful. Just like their mother,” Teddy whispered, his voice cracking with emotion, as he brushed an errant strand of hair from my face. A wave of love washed over me, unlike anything I'd ever experienced. It was as if all the stars in the sky had aligned to create this perfect moment. Our lives would never be the same.

Later, exhausted but elated, we sat together in the hospital room, marveling at the tiny miracles cradled in our arms. Little Kayla, with her wisp of auburn hair and delicate features, and Christopher, already showing signs of his father's strong build and sharp gaze.

“Can you believe it, Teddy? We're parents,” I whispered, my voice filled with wonder and gratitude. The journey that had led us to this moment had been nothing short of incredible—from enemies to lovers, neighbors to soulmates, our love had blossomed in the most unexpected ways.

“I never thought I'd be sitting here, holding my own children,” Teddy began, his voice soft and serious. “Sharing this moment with the most amazing woman I've ever known. You've shown me a side of myself I didn't believe existed. I'll forever be grateful for the day you moved in next door.”

Tears welled up in my eyes as I looked at the man who had become my rock, my confidant, and my partner in life. We'd faced so many challenges together, but through it all, we'd only grown stronger.

As our car crunched on the gravel driveway of the farmhouse later that week, a warm rush of love and gratitude washed over me.

“Look, babe, everyone's here,” Teddy said softly.

My father, his silver hair glinting in the sunlight, stood tall and proud beside Blake, my brother, who wore an expression of genuine excitement. Sydney, my sister-in-law, held three-year-old Logan’s hand, while Leah, almost sixteen now, bounced on her toes, eager to meet her new cousins.

“Ready to introduce them to the world?”

“Definitely,” I responded, feeling a world of emotion behind those simple words. Everything I ever wanted was right here within hugging distance.

As we stepped out of the car, the cool autumn air nipped at my skin, but the warmth of my family's embrace made it bearable. Blake and Sydney approached us first, their faces shining with happiness.

“Welcome home, little ones,” Blake whispered, leaning in to get a closer look at our babies.

“Congratulations, you two,” Sydney added, her eyes welling up with tears. "They're perfect."

“Can I hold one, Aunt Amelia?” Leah asked, practically vibrating with anticipation.

“Of course, sweetheart,” I agreed. “Let’s go inside though. It’s a bit cold out here for them.” Not to mention, I didn’t feel comfortable with her holding them standing up. But I wasn’t going to tell her that.

The door swung open with a gentle creak. I was happy to be home. That hospital bed had been ridiculously uncomfortable. We lead the way to the comfortable sitting room.

“Ok, Leah, sit down, and I’ll give you Kayla,” I said.

She sat down and put her arms out. The look of pure awe on Leah's face as she cradled her cousin melted my heart. She was enamored. Hopefully she waited to have kids for a long time, but perhaps not as long as me.

“She’s amazing.” Leah cooed as she gazed down at the tiny bundle in her arms.

“Hey, what about me?” Logan chirped, wiggling free from his mother's grasp and toddling towards us with an outstretched hand.

“Of course, you too,” I said, chuckling at his determination. “Sit down next to Leah.”

He gladly did. Teddy knelt down and gently placed our baby boy into Logan's tiny arms, watching closely and never fulling let him hold Christopher.

“Look, Daddy, I'm holding the baby!” Logan exclaimed proudly, his face beaming. “He’s a cute boy like me.”

“You're doing a great job, buddy,” Blake praised, ruffling his son's dark hair. “My turn though.”

Blake protectively retrieved baby Christopher from his son’s grasp. “Careful, Daddy, he heavy.”

Everyone laughed as I mouthed a quick thank you to Blake.

“Oh, and look who's here!” I said, spying a fluffy brown rabbit around the corner. “Hopper, come meet your new family members!”

We’d brought the rabbit with us to the new house. Ted had grown too attached, by the time we’d moved. We couldn’t just leave him there. He’d even had his own house outside with a rabbit garden in front.

Hopper wandered over, his nose twitching with curiosity.

“Bunny,” Logan laughed and tottered after him. Hopper ran back outside quicker than my nephew could reach him.

Julia’s voice drew my attention.

“Alright, you two.” She pointed at me and Ted. “You go take naps while the babies are sleeping. Everyone else, but Sydney, go home. You can visit another day.”

No way . I glanced at Ted my mouth open wide in surprise. This woman just became my favorite relative. How did she know that was exactly what I needed?

“I love you,” I said and gave her a big kiss on the cheek. I grabbed Teddy’s hand and pulled him to the bedroom. I was the luckiest person ever. I sunk into the plush mattress and instantly fell asleep.

The next few weeks flew by in a blur of sleepless nights, endless diaper changes, and more love than I could've ever imagined. Our cozy farmhouse was soon filled with the sound of laughter and tiny footsteps, and I couldn't have been happier.
