Chapter 4
“I can’t believe you made us watch that movie.” My friend Layla lifts her shoulders and shivers, as if the movie disturbed her to her core and she’s trying to shake it out of her.
“It wasn’t that bad.” I smirk as we walk toward my SUV in the parking lot.
It was your typical gory serial-killer-film, which I love, so maybe my gory scale is a little skewed compared to the average person.
The goriness doesn’t bother me, but I wasn’t very impressed by the plot. It was totally predictable.
“Yeah, well…next time, I’m picking. And it’s going to be the cheesiest, fluffiest rom-com you’ve ever seen.”
“Jokes on you,” I laugh. “I love rom-coms just as much.”
“Speaking of…” she side-eyes me with a grin, but doesn’t finish her sentence.
“Am I supposed to know what this means?” I point up and down at her, focusing mostly on her face.
“Are you ready for tomorrow?” she asks, her voice dripping with glee.
I roll my eyes. “Honestly, it’s been a little while since I’ve made a real-estate deal. I’m rusty. Hence all the cramming and study sessions this week. I’m not sure why he chose me, but I’ll take it. I could use the extra money.”
Layla scoffs. “That’s not what I meant.”
“Well, I don’t have any other plans tomorrow, so I don’t know what else you could possibly mean.
” I know exactly what she’s getting at, but I’m not feeding into it.
It’s ridiculous. I don’t know why everyone insists on playing matchmaker around here.
Daniela must have gotten to her. Or she got to Daniela.
Either way, it’s a business meeting—nothing more.
“Okay, be that way.”
I give her a stubborn look, then we climb into my SUV. After dropping her off, I head to my dad’s house to pick up Jessica.
