Chapter 18
It’s only been a few hours since I dropped Jameson off and I’m still coming down from the high of being around him. Something about him is so alluring, it’s hard to take my eyes off him when he’s nearby.
And now he’s calling me.
“Hello?” My tone is laced with a mix of surprise and curiosity.
“Hey. How’s it going?” He sounds so casual, like calling me is something he does every day.
“Good…” He chuckles through the phone, like he knows I’m thrown off by him calling and it amuses him.
“So, it’s funny that we were just talking about the mystery house, because my guy just called me and…he may have found something.”
My heart skips a beat.
“Are you serious?” I can barely mask my excitement.
“Yeah. Could I borrow you for dinner? I can tell you more about it.”
“Yes,” I reply at once.
Oops. That may have sounded too eager.
“Is tonight too soon?” I swear I can hear the smile in his voice. I imagine it in my mind as clear as the shallows of Lake Tahoe.
“Tonight?” I hesitate. I don’t know why. “You know what? Yeah. My daughter is at her grandfather’s for the night, so why not?”
“Okay. Pick you up at six?”
Pick me up? This is starting to sound more and more like a date. But then why wouldn’t he just call it that?
I pause for a moment. “Is this—”
“A date? Yeah. It is.” I can hear the grin in his voice again, and it evokes feelings in me that I haven’t felt in a long time. Like a teenager being asked on a date by the guy she’s had a crush on but never had the nerve to talk to before.
“Oh.”
“I hope you’re okay with that?” He doesn’t sound worried at all. He sounds…amused?
“Yeah, I…yeah. I’ll see you at six.”
“See you, Carly.”
