Chapter Thirty-Three

Raymond Castor was trying to nap when his cell door opened.

“Get your shit together, Castor. You’re getting out.”

Castor was groggy, and he wasn’t sure he’d heard the guard correctly. “I’m getting out?”

“That’s what I said. Someone posted your bail.”

“Who?”

“I got no idea. Chop, chop. I got things to do.”

Ray signed his discharge papers and was sent down to the waiting area. Karen Wyatt and Morris Johnson stood up when Ray walked out of the jail elevator.

“Mr. Castor, I’m Karen Wyatt, and I posted your bail.”

All the color drained from Ray’s face. “You just signed my death warrant, lady.”

“Or I made you a rich man with the means to disappear. I assume Miss Randolph told you about the three million dollars when she visited you in jail.”

“How did you know she visited me?”

“I’m a very rich woman, Mr. Castor. Money buys information. It also buys freedom. Give me the name of the prosecutor who helped set me up, and I’ll fly you anywhere you want to go on a private jet. We’re talking a new identity and a fresh start. All in exchange for a name.”

Ray’s head swiveled as he looked to see who was listening. “I gotta go!”

He sounded panicky.

Karen stuck one of her cards in his shirt pocket.

“I can fix this. I can get the DA to drop your case.”

“Can you stop me from being dead? Because you just killed me if anyone learns that you posted my bail and talked to me,” Ray said. Then he pushed past Karen and hurried out to the street.

Karen Wyatt wasn’t the only one who paid for information about the goings-on at the Multnomah County jail and courthouse. As soon as Walter Zegda learned that Karen Wyatt had posted Raymond Castor’s bail, he sent Gabby Wright to spy on Castor.

“Wyatt was waiting for Ray-Ray, and they parleyed,” Wright said into his phone.

“Could you hear what they said?”

“No. I couldn’t get close enough. But Ray-Ray ran away like he was scared to death.”

“Okay, Gabby. Stay on him. I want to know where he goes.”
