The shadows pour from the corners, a living tide of darkness that swallows the candlelight, the bidders, the auctioneer. The pig-man’s desperate scream cuts through the haze, then vanishes into silence.

I stand naked on the stage, wrists still bound, skin prickling under the sudden absence of eyes. The darkness reaches for me.

It slides across my bare flesh, warm and soft as silk, tasting the places where fear and defiance still burn.

The shadows weave themselves around my body, spinning fabric from pure night.

A gown takes shape—midnight and starlight, diamonds glittering like a captured sky.

Long sleeves. A sweeping skirt. A bodice that molds to every curve as if the darkness itself has memorized me.

The shadows recede, retreating to the edges of the room. The hall is empty now. Only ash drifting through the candlelight, settling on the stone floor like a dark snowfall.

And him.

Raven hair spilling over his crimson eyes, burning like open wounds of fire. The violet-silver ghost is gone—burned away. What remains is denser, absolute.

He strides as a demon-shaped rupture in reality, flames snapping toward him like broken leashes, starving for the abyss they’ll shatter against.

Black leather clings to him, every line radiating power that makes the air itself feel heavier. A king of shadows returned from exile.

“You came.” My voice is barely a whisper.

“You called.” His voice rolls through the silence, velvet and thunder, shaking the very bones of the house. “I will always answer.”

My pulse hammers.

“You broke the curse.” His expression softens. “I have all my power back. I’m whole again. And I’m bound to you, Lucille. Bound by love and the call that pulled me across dimensions.”

I can’t move. My body refuses to obey. I stand frozen, trembling, tears tracking down my cheeks.

He waits. Patient. Eternal.

I glance at the empty hall, the ash still falling. “What happened to everyone? The people. The bidders. The auctioneer—”

“I removed their eyes.” His voice is casual, almost bored. “They saw you naked. That was unacceptable.”

I blink. “You… what?”

“I did not chase them.” A dark chuckle slips free. “A few rats ran.”

My mind stutters, trying to process the words. “You plucked out their eyes and let them stumble out blind?”

“Some of them. Most of them are ash.” He shrugs, the motion fluid and lethal. “The ones who ran were not worth the effort.”

I should be horrified. Instead, a laugh bubbles up from my chest, slightly hysterical. That is… that is terrible. The thought forms even as the laugh keeps coming. “That is… that is terrible.”

“You are smiling.”

“I’m not.”

“You are.” He grins, sharp and wicked. “You are smiling, and it is beautiful.”

I shake my head, still laughing.

“You are impossible.”

“You are radiant.”

The words sober me. Reality cuts back in. Cain. His blood running inside my veins.

“Blake—the Order. Fifty-two of them still on the road, heading for Bloodgrove—”

He laughs. Not a gentle sound. The laugh of a predator who knows he is the apex.

“Let them come.” His eyes gleam like coals. “Before the curse broke they might have been a threat. Now?” He shakes his head, cruel amusement curving his mouth. “I am ready for war.”

He steps closer. Even with me on the stage he is taller, the difference in power a physical weight.

His eyes beam like flames. “The curse kept us from fully mating. From becoming one. But now—” He pauses, his eyes searching mine. “Now we can.”

In the space between one heartbeat and the next he is at the base of the stage. He stands directly in front of the dais, close enough that the heat of him brushes my skin.

“Or you can choose.”

The words land like a blade.

“You’re free to go, Lucille. I will give you gold, jewelry, every wealth your heart desires. You can go back to your father. Live your life away from the darkness that is me.”

He extends one gloved hand. Black leather gleams in the candlelight.

“Take my hand, my love, and accept being the shadow’s bride.”

My breath catches. He looks handsomely striking.

“Or take the carriage waiting outside and go wherever you wish.”

He is not human. Not even close. The sheer density of him, the way the air bends around his presence, the way every instinct I possess screams both run and stay. Goosebumps race down my arms, my spine, the insides of my thighs. Magnetic. Inevitable.

I step forward. Heels click against the stage. The shadow-gown swirls around my legs like liquid night. I reach for his hand.

When our fingers touch, he is warm.

His grip closes around mine. Heat radiates through the leather. Not a ghost anymore. Just warmth and strength and the impossible reality of his presence.

“You are real,” I breathe.

“I’m real.” His thumb strokes my knuckles, slow and deliberate. “I am here. And I am never leaving again.”

Tears slip free before I can stop them. “I thought I lost you. I destroyed the mirror. I trapped you—”

One second I’m on the stage; the next I’m in his arms, lifted as if I weigh nothing, the world tilting. He cradles me against his chest, and the scent of him—night, leather, power—floods my senses.

“You brought me home.” He lifts my hand and presses a kiss to my knuckles, lips lingering.

“You broke the curse, Lucille. Your blood. Your love. Your voice calling me back across dimensions.” His eyes meet mine, crimson fire and something deeper.

“You are my anchor to this reality now. I will always find you. I will always answer the call in your blood.”

A broken laugh escapes me. “That is—that is a lot of pressure.”

His mouth curves. “You are the beam of sunshine in my darkness. The fire in my endless night.” His free hand settles at my waist, possessive, claiming. “I have waited three thousand years for you, Lucille. I will wait three thousand more if I must.”

“No.” I grip his arms, feeling the solid muscle beneath the leather. “No more waiting. I’m here. I’m yours.”

His eyes blaze. “Say it again.”

“I am yours.”

He pulls me tighter and his mouth finds mine.

The kiss is fierce—hungry, desperate, possessive. I taste victory and relief and three thousand years of loneliness poured into a single moment. My fingers dig into his shoulders. The shadows around us seem to lean closer.

He releases me just enough to step back. The loss of his heat is immediate, almost painful.

He drop to his knees.

One knee on the stone floor. Raven hair cascades forward. Crimson eyes burn up at me with an intensity that steals the air from my lungs.

“Lucille.” His voice cracks on my name. “I have walked this earth for three thousand years. I have seen empires crumble and stars fall. I have never—not once—felt anything like what I feel for you.”

My heart pounds so hard I’m certain he can hear it.

“You called me across dimensions. You broke my curse with your love. You stood naked before an army of predators and screamed my name.” He reaches for my hand; his fingers tremble. “I want you at my side forever. I want to claim you as my mate. My queen.”

The crimson fire in his eyes intensifies until it feels like it could brand me.

“Will you marry me, Lucille? Will you bind yourself to me for eternity?”

Tears stream down my cheeks. Words refuse to form.

“Yes,” I breathe against his mouth. “Yes. I will marry you. I will be your mate.”

His arms crush me against his chest. His mouth claims mine again.

The shadows rise around us, sealing us in a cocoon of living darkness.

I’m home.
