Chad

I could hear my little witch with Alister, and it drove me mad.

The thought of her in there, made me want to barge in and claim her as mine.

But I knew she needed time.

I’d lost control the first time I shifted, and I didn’t want that to happen again.

I paced outside Alister’s bedroom door, lost in thoughts of my little witch, when the door creaked open. I whirled around, nearly smacking into Alister’s chest.

He raised an eyebrow. “Eavesdropping, are we?”

I straightened up, trying to play it cool. “Just…guarding the door.”

“Guarding the door of my bedroom?” he asked, amused.

He had a point.

It sounded ridiculous.

“Well, you can relax,” he said, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. “She’s asking for you.”

My heart leaped. “Really?”

I walked into the bedroom, finding Evelyn changed into some sweats.

“Hey, puppy,” she greeted me with a smile that made my heart race.

I wanted to run to her, scoop her up, tell her how much I missed her—even though it had only been an hour, and most importantly, add some of my scent to her. She smelled too much of the vampire for my taste.

I knew I could be a bit much sometimes, so I reeled it in and opted for a hug instead.

I might have squeezed a little too hard.

She laughed, the sound like music to my ears.

“Thanks for checking on me,” she said, her eyes warm and sincere.

Damn, she was beautiful.

I grinned, trying to hide how much her words affected me. “No problem. It’s kinda my job, you know. As your official bodyguard.”

Evelyn rolled her eyes, still smiling. “Right, because I’m such a damsel in distress.”

“Oh, absolutely,” I teased, plopping down next to her on the bed. “A regular princess in need of saving.”

She snorted and shoved my shoulder. “Please. If anything, I’ll be the one saving your furry ass.”

I clutched my chest in mock offense. “My ass is perfectly groomed, thank you very much, and quite pretty. Wanna see?”

Her laughter filled the room. “Oh, I know it’s pretty. I check it out every time you shift,” she teased, her cheeks flushing.

“Oh, really?” I grinned. “Well, I am pretty magnificent.”

Evelyn’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “Mmm, yes. Magnificent is one word for it.”

“You know, if you want a closer look, all you have to do is ask,” I said with a wink.

She leaned in close, her breath warm against my ear. “Maybe I will…”

I smiled, my heart soaring.

Yes, I definitely wanted that.

I wanted to claim her as mine.

Bite her and mark her as my mate.

Suddenly, Alister cleared his throat from the doorway, causing us both to jump.

“If you two are quite finished discussing canine anatomy,” he said, “the others are back.”
