Chapter 67 Geneva

Geneva

We were all looking at the Capri Classic that was sitting at the curb, its motor humming loudly. I knew it was the cops. They always thought they were fooling somebody in those damn Capris, but everybody always knew it was the po-po.

Then the driver’s-side door opened and my ex-husband, Eric, stepped out. “Isn’t that Eric?” Crystal said, taking a step away from me.

“Yeah.” My heart was thumping in my chest. This can’t be good, I thought as I slowly rose from the bench.

Then the back door opened and Deeka stepped out. I just closed my eyes and shook my head. Something really bad had happened, but I willed my mind not to go there.

“There’s Eric!” Crystal suddenly whooped. My eyes flew open, and there was my son, stepping out of the other side of the car. I wanted to run to him, but my feet refused to move.

All three men started toward us.

When Deeka and Eric passed beneath the streetlight I could see blood on their clothes. Deeka’s eye was swollen and his lip was busted. Eric had a shiner under his eye as well, but otherwise he looked unharmed.

“Well, Geneva, I found your son beating the shit out of your lover,” Big Eric said, a little too proudly for my taste.

Eric wrapped his arms around me. “I’m so sorry, Mama.”

I pulled him to me. “No, I’m sorry, baby. I’m sorry.”

“Look,” Eric said, pulling away from me, “I don’t know what came over me.” He shook his head in embarrassment. “I mean, seeing you like that with him, I just went crazy, you know? You’re my mother and—”

“I know, baby. You don’t have to say anything else—”

“Ah, Geneva, let the man talk,” Big Eric boomed.

“I just want to say that I’m cool with it now.” Eric levied a friendly slap on Deeka’s arm. “Me and my man here had a long talk, and I know that he really loves you.”

I looked at Deeka.

“Who am I to stand in between two people who love each other?” Eric said, and stepped aside.

Deeka stepped forward and took my hand in his.

“Oh God, this is soooo romantic!” Crystal cried, and threw herself into Neville’s arms.
