Fragment 5

I’ve done it. Finally. She’s mine.

She breathes softly in the seat next to me. My hand rests solidly on her thigh, afraid that if I let go for a second then she will disappear, as if she’s only a figment of my imagination. I squeeze her firmly, she’s really there.

A small amount of crimson is smeared between her back and the car seat. Killing Chadwick was the second best moment of my life, behind the moment I first laid eyes on her. Well, I guess now third. Behind every moment spent with her, touching her body, breathing the same air.

It will take her time to get over her girlfriend. I understand. She’ll be sad at first, but soon, she’ll see that I can cherish her, protect her, love her. Deep down inside, she already loves me, she just doesn’t know it yet.

Charlotte stirs and I pull her against my chest, holding the chloroform rag against her mouth. She settles back down, and I kiss her hair. She’ll wake up when we get to the safehouse. When we can start a new life together.

I’ve done it. She’s mine.
