Chapter 42
Miranda hated the rain. It made Buckbert look even darker and more sinister.
This was one small town she did not like one bit.
She pulled into the complex where Hagan lived and looked around.
Hagan had said she had the unit at the far back.
It looked like every generic complex Miranda had ever seen.
Probably built in the Nineties, yellow sandstone bricks abounded.
Talk about builder-grade, but Hagan had said there weren’t many other rental units in town.
Miranda was surprised there was even this one.
Five buildings, three units each. Cars in the lot told her the socioeconomic status of the occupants.
There wasn’t a lot of economic opportunity here.
Unless people were willing to drive—probably out of county.
Or even state. Texas was not that far away—if the money was good.
She’d lay money on the fact that most of Hagan’s neighbors worked at the local plastics factory or in the service industry.
There was a black SUV parked in the extra spot that would have been reserved for Hagan’s unit. It was parked sideways—well over the lines. At an awkward angle. Miranda eyed it.
The engine was running.
With the driver’s door standing wide open.
In the pouring rain.
And there was shouting?
Miranda wasn’t going to mess around. She grabbed her phone and hit Dani on speed dial. When the other woman answered, she didn’t mess around. “Get me OHP to this address now. As fast as you can. Something is going down at Lindhour’s home address. I’m going to go check it out.”
“Watch yourself, Randi. I’ll get help there as soon as I can.”
