1. Linda #2
Linda took a deep, steadying breath, walking out onto the slippery wooden edge of the floating dock. She planted her water shoes firmly against the damp rubber mat, trying to ignore the way the dock dipped and swayed with every gentle ripple of the lake.
"Remember," Isabel called out from the second-leg handover zone a few yards away, waving encouragingly. "Stay out of their bounce range!"
"On your marks..." Pete’s voice echoed over the speakers, building the suspense as the crowd fell into a hushed, anticipatory murmur.
Linda crouched slightly, her heart hammering a nervous rhythm against her ribs.
"Get set..."
CRACK!
The starter pistol fired, releasing a sharp puff of white smoke into the air, and before Linda’s brain could fully process the command to move, her feet were already reacting.
With a sharp gasp of pure adrenaline, she launched herself off the edge of the wooden dock and scrambled directly onto the first floating hurdle of the course.
The moment her weight hit the curved, air-filled red sphere, the universe tilted violently sideways.
The 'Wobble Sphere' lived up to every terrifying expectation. It offered zero traction, spinning freely on its axis the second a foot touched its slick surface. Linda’s arms shot out, windmilling wildly through the humid air as she tried to defy the laws of physics and gravity simultaneously.
For one glorious, suspended second, she thought she might actually conquer it.
She took one frantic, sliding step forward—
And then her feet completely vanished from beneath her.
With a resounding, theatrical splat, Linda went sliding sideways off the curve of the red sphere, pitching directly through the humid air and landing squarely on her stomach in three feet of refreshing, algae-tinted lake water.
From the shoreline, the Hearts Hotel team, who had gathered near the water's edge with binoculars and megaphones, erupted into an absolute roar of hysterical, unified laughter.
“Great, just great,” Linda hissed.
"Ten out of ten for artistic execution!" Owen’s voice bellowed across the water through cupped hands, waving a white towel like a surrender flag.
"Get up, Linda! Swim like a shark! Catch that Sanibel mom!" Maggie roared through her megaphone, treating a casual community lake game like a national security crisis.
Gasping and sputtering, coughing up a microscopic splash of lake water while frantically wiping wet strands of brown hair out of her eyes, Linda hauled herself back up onto the slippery red vinyl of the course.
Her competitive streak flared up hot and bright in her chest. She wasn't about to let Sanibel walk away with bragging rights while she was soaked to the skin.
Ignoring the water dripping from the tip of her nose and the loud cheers of the crowd, Linda dropped deliberately to her hands and knees.
She scrambled across the remainder of the rolling sphere like a determined spider, lunging forward with reckless abandon until she reached the entrance of the dark blue vinyl crawl-tube.
The Sanibel competitor had managed to stay upright across the first obstacle and was already halfway through the tunnel.
But Linda had pure, unadulterated momentum and stubborn Heart pride pushing her forward.
Pushing through the hot, claustrophobic plastic tube, she popped out the other side just inches behind her opponent, scrambling clumsily across the final bouncy bridge of her leg with her heart hammering a mile a minute.
Ahead of her, the second-leg handover platform loomed large, and waiting for her on the wooden transition dock was a wide-eyed and equally fired-up Isabel.
The floating wooden transition platform was slick with spray, vibrating underfoot as the heavy bass from the festival's PA system thudded across the water.
Linda dragged herself out of the final slippery exit of the crawl-tube, her chest heaving, water streaming from her soaked hair, and her waterlogged shoes squishing loudly against the planks.
Ahead of her stood Isabel, whose eyes were wide with a lethal mix of mounting terror and pride.
"You're behind!" Isabel hissed, bouncing on the balls of her feet as though she were standing on hot coals. "The Sanibel mom just tagged her partner! Move, Linda, move!"
"I'm moving, I'm moving!" Linda gasped, slamming her palm forward with explosive force against Isabel's outstretched hand to complete the official relay baton slap.
The moment skin met skin, Isabel launched herself forward onto the second half of the aquatic obstacle course, a narrow, swaying blue balance beam stretched tautly across four feet of open, emerald-green lake water.
For a fraction of a second, Isabel looked like an Olympic gymnast, her arms extended outward for balance, her posture immaculate, her stride purposeful.
It lasted precisely two seconds.
As the opposing runner from Eagle View Guest Lodge charged past on the parallel lane, Isabel’s left foot completely betrayed her.
A sudden, violent wobble of the inflatable cylinder sent a shockwave down the beam.
Isabel’s arms windmilled in a desperate, frantic circle, her mouth opening in a cinematic, silent shriek that was instantly swallowed by the roar of the crowd.
Instead of going down alone, Isabel’s survival instinct, or perhaps just her innate competitive malice, kicked into overdrive.
As she pitched forward toward the surface of the lake, her hands shot out like a pair of grappling hooks, latching securely onto the front of the Sanibel runner's neon green jersey.
"Oh, no you don't!" Isabel yelled across the water.
With a magnificent, synchronized physics-defying lunge, Isabel dragged the horrified Sanibel competitor down with her.
They hit the water in an explosion of spray, flailing limbs, colorful life vests, and flying water shoes, generating a tidal wave that splashed all the way up onto the judges' floating raft.
Silence fell over the shoreline for a microsecond, a collective held breath from hundreds of spectators, before the entire Hearts Hotel team erupted into a deafening roar of absolute, unhinged triumph.
The crowd roared with laughter. Maggie blew her whistle so hard she turned purple, pumping her clipboard in the air like a general celebrating a conquered province, while Penny cheered herself hoarse, waving a spare team t-shirt like a battle standard.
A heartbeat later, Isabel bobbed back up to the surface of the lake.
She spat out a mouthful of lake water, slicked her drenched hair back out of her eyes with one steady hand, and pointed a dripping, accusatory finger directly at the sputtering, thoroughly bewildered Sanibel mom bobbing right beside her.
"I may be soaked to the bone," Isabel shouted across the water, her voice carrying a theatrical magnificence that commanded the entire lake, "but I took you down with me!"
On the docks, Linda doubled over, laughing so hard her ribs ached and her stomach muscles burned.
She waded through the shallow edge of the water to reach the wooden ladder, grabbing Isabel’s outstretched hand and hauling her dripping friend back onto solid ground.
They stood there together, dripping puddles onto the cedar planks, completely ruined by lake water, dignity entirely abandoned, and grinning like absolute maniacs.
"I guess Maggie and Penny were right," Isabel panted, wringing out a handful of her wet hair while adjusting her crooked sunglasses. "That certainly beats sitting in deck chairs."
"I think we just secured our position as the most chaotic team players of the Summer Lake games,” Linda laughed, wiping spray from her eyes as they trudged back up the grassy slope toward the canopy tent.
Waiting for them under the shade of the canvas was a welcoming committee fit for returning war heroes. Maggie was pacing back and forth with her clipboard, her eyes shining with pure operational joy, while Michael was handing out large-sized towels as though they were medals of honor.
"Magnificent execution," Maggie declared, stopping dead in her tracks and giving them both a sharp, crisp military nod. "The tactical sacrifice of dragging the anchor leg down with you was a stroke of genius, Isabel."
"I didn't plan it," Isabel wheezed, accepting a fluffy white towel from Michael and wrapping it tightly around her shoulders. "Gravity just happened to have a personal vendetta against me today."
"Gravity answers to the Hearts Hotel code today," Michael chuckled, pouring them both cups of ice-cold lemonade from the cooler. "Drink up. You've got ten minutes to towel off before the afternoon bracket begins, and trust me, the women's volleyball tournament is about to start."
As if summoned by the very mention of the sport, a deep, resonant rumble echoed from the parking lot behind the picnic grounds. All heads turned toward the main entrance as a familiar, heavy-duty SUV pulled smoothly into an empty gravel slot near the trees.
The driver's door swung open, and Darius stepped out.
The casual, relaxed vacation vibe he had worn that morning was entirely gone.
He had stopped back at his house to change back into his sporty clothes for the festival.
However, his posture was commanding, his stride purposeful, and his dark eyes carried a sharp, crackling energy that instantly cut through the festive lakeside noise.
Linda froze midway through toweling her hair, her breath catching in her throat as she watched him approach. There was no mistaking the look on his face; it was the expression of a man who had just dismantled an empire and was walking away from the rubble without looking back at the explosion.
