Robert Gray
When I crashed my car, the impact sounded like a bomb had gone off.
It wasn’t in my plans to survive that shit.
In the back of the ambulance, I was in and out of consciousness.
Discombobulated, all I felt was pain shooting through my body from head to toe.
When I arrived at the hospital, they began examining me right away.
I wasn’t exactly sure what type of injuries I sustained, but that shit caused me to pass out.
Once I finally came too, all I could hear was the beeping of the machines around me.
My eyes were sensitive to the bright ass lights and the strong smell of disinfectant irritated my nose.
Bandages were wrapped around my forearm and abdomen, along with an IV stuck in my arm.
For a few seconds, I just stared at the ceiling as everything came rushing back to me.
I felt sick on my stomach, which I assume came from the mixture of the liquor and whatever pain medicine that was in my system.
I slowly pushed myself higher against the pillows and a sharp pain ripped through my chest.
“Fuck!”
I clenched my jaw and waited for the pain to subside. Next thing I knew, the door opened and a nurse walked in carrying a clipboard.
“Oh, you’re awake.” She barely smiled. “How are you feeling? Are the pain meds working for you?”
“Hell no,” My voice sounded dry and weak. “How bad am I hurt?”
“Well, you suffered several injuries, but fortunately nothing that required immediate surgery. You have a few fractured ribs and your arm is fractured also. The doctor will be coming in soon to speak to you about all of that.”
When the bitch said fortunately, I almost laughed.
“What about the other people?”
“What other people?” Her expression changed.
That was enough to make my heart start pounding.
“Exactly what the fuck I said.” I tried to move again but the pain reminded me not to.
“Um, I don’t have information about any other patients. However, I can tell you that the police have been notified. Which means they’ll probably want to speak with you once you’re medically cleared.”
“Probably? For what?” I frowned.
“Your alcohol levels were extremely high. You should get some rest though. I’ll inform the doctor that you're awake now.”
She walked out leaving me to stare at the closed door.
Suddenly, it felt as if the room was closing in on me.
A failed blood test for alcohol meant I would possibly be charged with drunk and reckless driving.
Thankfully, I wasn’t already handcuffed to the bed.
I knew right then I had to get the fuck up outta there.
I glanced around the room in search of my belongings.
I didn’t see shit at first, then I noticed a bag sitting on the counter in a corner.
I slowly slid my legs over the side of the bed before working my way to stand up.
Again, pain shot through my body as I held on to the rail of the bed.
Sweat beaded on my forehead as I tried to get my bearings together.
I tried taking a few deep breaths but that shit was on the verge of taking me out as my knees buckled.
I didn’t give a fuck how much pain I was in, I had to get the fuck outta dodge.
Slowly, I limped toward the corner where my bag was located and searched through it.
Pieces of my clothes and wallet were the only thing in there.
Where the fuck was my phone? I needed to get up with my brother but I couldn’t remember his number, the nigga stayed switching phones.
However, I did memorize one number as I made my way over to the hospital phone.
“Hello?” Tawanna answered.
“Aye,” I spoke, clearing my throat.
“Who the hell is this?”
“Rob, where you at?”
I needed to sit down, I felt so weak.
“At home…where are you and why does it sound like you’re whispering.” She questioned.
“I’m not whispering, I’m at the hospital. I need you to come pick me up. I don’t have my phone so I need you to hurry up and get here. I'll meet you at the entrance of the parking deck. Don’t tell nobody that you’re coming to get me. Don’t even mention you talked to me. You got that?”
“Yeah. Okay, I’m on the way. I’ll be there in ten minutes.”
I disconnected the call. The shirt in my bag was cut up.
I already had on a hospital gown and knew I’d stick out like a sore thumb walking down the hallways.
Mentally, I blocked out the pain before easing my way out the room as normal as possible.
No nurses were lingering around and not one sat at the nursing station.
As quickly as I could, I headed to the elevator.
I had to keep wiping my face because I was sweating so bad.
Once I walked outside, the air was somewhat refreshing.
The breeze felt good but not good enough.
I waited for Tawanna exactly where I told her I would.
I wasn’t waiting too long before she pulled up looking around for me.
Quickly, I waved her down so she wouldn’t pass by me.
I eased my way into the passenger seat and instructed her to take off.
“What the hell happened to you?” Her eyes were big. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.” I lied. “I need you to take me to my brother's crib.”
I gave her the address and rode silently the whole ride.
There wasn’t shit for me to talk about as a million thoughts invaded my mind.
I needed to disappear fast, without a trace.
The only person I could count on to help make that happen was my brother Roy.
The thirty minute ride felt like three hours.
Once Tawanna pulled into the driveway, I exhaled, glad to see that my brother was actually home.
“Go knock on the door and tell Roy I’m in the car.” I instructed her.
Within three minutes, Roy came out with a confused expression on his face.
“Damn nigga, what the fuck you done got yourself into?” He questioned.
“Help me get in the house.” I coughed trying to get out of the car.
He did as I asked, and I made sure to remind Tawanna that she hadn’t seen nor heard from me. She agreed and promised to keep it a secret. I stumbled inside the house and laid right across the couch.
“I need to disappear.”
“Nah, nigga, you need to tell me what the fuck is going on.” Roy folded his arms.
I sighed, taking several seconds to get myself together mentally and physically.
“I killed Ava and Savannah.”
Roy didn’t say anything as he pulled a blunt from behind his ear and sparked it. I wasn’t completely sure if they made it out alive. If they did, I’m sure the nurse would’ve said something.
“How?”
“I crashed my car near Seattle street, I think.” I confessed.
“Nigga, that was you?” He asked, shaking his head. “Traffic was backed up for hours, nigga. It was on the news and everything. Your car was unrecognizable, how the fuck you make it out alive?”
“I don’t know.” I sighed. “I know the cops are gonna be looking for me. I need to get the fuck out of town. When Ava people find out I’m behind the wreck and not dead, they coming for me too.”
Roy tried passing me the blunt but I declined.
Shit, I could barely fucking breathe. I waited about forty five minutes for him to make a few calls and put some shit together before he helped me into his ride.
He told me he had a spot out in the country where I could stay and he’d have someone come out to treat my injuries.
That’s all I needed until I was healed enough to eventually move out of state, if not the country.
Fuck all the bullshit. Fuck Ava. Fuck Kelcy.
Fuck them kids. Fuck that white boy and everybody else.
They could all die slowly if you’d ask me.
I had no regrets and I only prayed that I got the job done right.
