19. CHAPTER NINETEEN - EMBERS OF LOVE

Chapter & Verse was buzzing with excitement, a low hum of anticipation filling the air as Richard L. Ginsberg’s deep voice echoed through the room. I stood a few feet away from him, soaking in the sight of the crowd that had gathered. It was moments like these that made all the late nights and hard work worthwhile.

I glanced over at Alex, standing in the corner with a book in his hand, his eyes locked onto me with that charming smile that never failed to make my heart skip a beat. I smiled back, a wave of warmth and contentment washing over me.

Suddenly, the door chimes jingled, drawing my attention. I turned, expecting to see more people troop in, but instead, my eyes trained on Colton entering with a group of people carrying cardboard boxes. He caught my eye and gave me a sheepish smile as he set the boxes down. Curious, I walked over to him and peeked inside.

"More of Ginsberg’s books," Colton explained, straightening up. "The publisher sent them over."

"Perfect timing," I said, nodding approvingly. "Thanks, Colton."

He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "I really owe you for this, Lily. Partnering with Ginsberg has been the break my publishing company needed."

"You're welcome," I replied, my tone softening. "Family has to look out for each other, right?"

He sighed, his expression regretful. "I wish I had believed in your dream earlier. I’m sorry for being such a stubborn ass."

"It’s all good," I assured him, giving his arm a reassuring squeeze. "If anything, you should thank Alex. He’s the one who helped me understand that you were just trying to protect me in your own way."

Colton’s face darkened slightly as he must have clearly remembered the night of our big fight. "Where is he, anyway?"

I pointed to where Alex stood in the corner. Colton nodded and made his way over to him. I watched as they began to talk, their familiar brotherhood slowly rekindling. Seeing them like that warmed my heart. Despite everything, they were best friends, and it was good to see them getting along again.

As Richard finished his reading, the crowd erupted in applause. I smiled broadly, grateful for the successful event. People started to form a line at the counter, eager to buy a copy of Richard's book. I made my way over, ready to help.

Just as I reached the counter, Alex appeared by my side. He planted a quick kiss on my forehead. "Richard wants to talk to you," he said. "I'll handle the customers."

"Thank you," I said, kissing him on the cheek. "You're the best."

With a grateful smile, I headed toward the back of the store, where Richard was waiting. He stood near a shelf, perusing the titles thoughtfully.

"Mr. Ginsberg," I greeted him, feeling a bit nervous despite the familiarity.

"I believe I told you to call me Richard," he said, turning to face me with a kind smile. "Thank you for hosting this event, Lily. Your bookstore is quite charming."

"Thank you," I replied, feeling a flush of pride. "It means a lot coming from you."

He nodded, his gaze turning more serious. "I wanted to talk to you about your store. I've seen a lot of bookstores, but this one has a unique atmosphere. It’s clear how much love and dedication you've put into it."

"Well, it’s my dream," I admitted, feeling a bit self-conscious under his scrutinizing gaze.

"And it shows," Richard said. "I was wondering if you’d be interested in a more permanent collaboration. Maybe we could set up a monthly event where I and a couple of other authors come and do readings, signings, things like that."

My heart leaped at the idea. "That would be amazing! I’d love to."

"Good," he said, smiling warmly. "I’ll have my assistant work out the details with you. But I wanted to let you know personally how much I appreciate what you’re doing here."

"Thank you, Richard," I said, feeling a lump form in my throat. "That means a lot."

As we discussed some ideas, I glanced over at the counter. Alex was handling the line of customers with ease, a natural smile on his face as he chatted with them. Colton stood beside him, helping out where he could, the two of them working together.

Seeing them like that, I felt a rush of gratitude. Life wasn’t perfect, but it was moments like these that made everything worth it. I had my dream job, a supportive brother, and a boyfriend who loved me unconditionally.

As the event wrapped up, I returned to the counter. Alex looked up and grinned at me. "How’d it go?"

"Amazing," I said, beaming. "Richard wants to set up a regular event here."

"That’s fantastic, Lily," he said, his eyes shining with pride.

Colton nodded in agreement. "You’ve built something really special here, sis."

I smiled, feeling a sense of accomplishment. "I couldn’t have done it without you guys."

"Team effort," Alex said, slipping an arm around my waist. "And speaking of teamwork, how about we celebrate tonight? My treat."

"Sounds perfect," I said, leaning into him. "But first, let's finish up here."

The three of us worked together, wrapping up the event and closing the store for the night. As we locked up, I felt a sense of peace settle over me. This was my life—my beautiful, chaotic, love-filled life—and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Later that night, Alex and I walked hand-in-hand under the city lights. The air was warm, and the stars peeked through the haze of city glow, adding a touch of magic to the night.

“I still can’t believe how amazing today was,” I said, glancing up at Alex. “Thank you for being there, for helping me.”

“Always,” he replied, squeezing my hand. “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”

We strolled in comfortable silence for a while, our footsteps echoing off the pavement. The city had a way of feeling alive, even at this hour, with people milling about, the distant sound of music and laughter weaving through the night air.

We reached a quiet park, and Alex led me to a bench near the fountain, the water sparkling under the streetlights. He looked at me, his eyes serious yet filled with a tender warmth that made my heart flutter.

“Lily, there’s something I’ve been wanting to say,” he began, his voice steady but laced with emotion.

I tilted my head, curiosity and a hint of nervousness bubbling up inside me. “What is it?”

He took a deep breath, his grip on my hand tightening. “I know this might feel impromptu and rushed, but there’s no one else I’d rather have by my side. I don’t want to spend another minute apart from you.”

My heart skipped a beat, and I felt a surge of anticipation. “Alex…”

“Do you remember the nights we spent in the cabin during the snowstorm?” he asked, his voice softening as he brought up the memory.

I nodded, a smile tugging at my lips. “How could I forget? It was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life.”

“We were trapped there, just the two of us, with nothing but the fire in the fireplace to keep us warm,” he continued, his eyes locking onto mine. “We talked for hours, sharing our dreams, our fears, everything. It was in that moment I knew, knew without a doubt—that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you.”

Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes as I remembered the intimacy of that night, the way we had opened up to each other like never before. It felt like the world had stopped, and it was just the two of us, wrapped in each other’s warmth.

“The fire that kept us warm in that cabin,” Alex said, his voice dropping to a whisper. “It’s like the fire in my heart for you. It’s strong, enduring, and it will never go out.”

A tear slipped down my cheek, and I couldn’t help but smile through the overwhelming emotion. “Alex, I…”

Before I could finish, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. My breath caught in my throat as he opened it to reveal a beautiful ring, the diamond sparkling in the moonlight.

“Lily, will you marry me?” he asked, his voice filled with hope and love. “I know it’s sudden, but I can’t imagine my life without you. You’re my eternal flame, my everything.”

For a moment, all I could do was stare at him, my heart swelling with love and joy. Then, with a tearful smile, I nodded. “Yes, Alex. Yes, I will marry you.”

He slipped the ring onto my finger, and I threw my arms around him, pulling him into a deep, heartfelt kiss. It felt like the world had melted away, leaving just the two of us in our own little bubble of happiness.

“I love you, Lily,” he murmured against my lips, his hands gently cupping my face.

“I love you too, Alex,” I whispered back, my voice trembling with emotion. “So much.”

The city lights shimmered around us, and the fountain’s gentle murmur provided a calming atmosphere. We stayed like that for a while, just holding each other, basking in our warmth.

Eventually, we stood and began walking back, our hands still intertwined, hearts beating in perfect harmony. As we walked through the city streets, I knew that this was just the beginning of our story—a story of love, endless possibilities, and embers of love.
