Chapter 31

CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

Nervous moths fill my gut. They are not beautiful butterflies. They’re gray and dark, and the kind that eat holes in things when you’re not paying attention.

Next to me is a really big problem. Something over six feet and burning, a man that seems capable of setting things on fire with his anger.

“Hello, father.”

I rub at my temple as I listen to my father’s angry questions.

“Nan is here with me. I thought it was best. No, I didn’t. Yes, I did.”

I hold the phone away from my ear as he yells about my marriage to Wolf.

“Yes, we are married.”

Wolf crosses his thick arms and tries to melt me with an atomic stare.

“Dad, listen—”

Wolf takes the phone from me. “This is Wolf Black. Kate’s husband.”

I can hear the silence on the other end of the line. Then yelled curses.

Shaking his head, Wolf makes an angry face. “Are ye’ bloody done?”

As my father’s strangled words die off, Wolf begins to talk. “There’s a man sitting in my living room who says you promised him Kate’s hand in marriage.”

As my father replies something, Wolf turns his hard gaze on me. Finally, he says, “He’s a little fucking late. She’s mine now. And guess what. She doesn’t have to do what you say now. She listens to me.”

I nearly fall over on the floor.

On the other end of the line, I hear, “Put Mikail on.”

Wolf walks casually out of the room. Holds out the phone, “He wants to talk to you.”

Mikail’s mouth flies open. For a second, he looks totally vexed. Wolf grins victoriously. And all I can think about is how I’m going to get my revenge on the man.

Mikail finally takes the phone. “Yes, s-sir.”

There’s a muffled voice on the other end.

“I’ll do what I can. But her husband is… um, not going to like it.”

Wolf snorts. “Well, that’s one way to describe it. Give me the damned phone.”

Before I can intervene, Wolf has the phone and is walking down the hallway. He slams the bedroom door.

My heart nearly leaps clear out of my skin. I race after him. “What the hell?” The door’s locked. “You bastard.”

The man’s deep voice carries through the door. Crap. He’s telling him everything! Oh my god. No! I cry out, “Don’t—” tell him we slept together.

I hear Wolf say, “Yes, we consummated the damned marriage.”

No! Mortification sweeps through my body and cinches my belly into a pretzel.

Sighing, I drop my head to the door as I fill up to the top of my scalp with dread.

When the stupid thing flies open a few minutes later, I fall forward.

Straight into Wolf’s chest. My nose smashes against his perfectly sculpted pec.

A brutal reminder of gratuitously licking the same exact spot just a few hours ago.

A deep rumble shakes his chest. “What the hell?”

“I was eavesdropping.”

“I see that.”

“What did he say?”

“That he’s ashamed of your behavior, for me to file for divorce immediately, and for Mikail to bring you home straight away.”

I grab onto his forearms for dear life. “He didn’t!”

“You can call back and ask him yourself.”

My legs begin to crumple and Wolf pivots me until my back is against the wall. I slide down to the wood flooring into a sloppy knot of legs and arms.

I stare at his toes as I wait on his retort. Finally, he squats down and gets right in my face. “Curse me all you want, Princess, but you’re the one who fucked up. Now, get your plans together, because the future doesn’t include me.”
