Chapter 34

CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

There she is. Damn. I’m going to have a full head of grays from the woman. “There you are.”

Sobbing, Kate dashes her hand across the tears on her face. “I needed some space.”

“Let’s get inside.”

She stands when I grip her arm and pull her up from the curb.

My hands are still shaking, even if I don’t want to admit it.

“It’s not safe here. We need to move out as soon as I make some calls.

And I need to put on some fucking clothes.

For some reason, I always seem to be running around half naked when you’re involved. ”

As we climb the stairs, I consider all of the things that have happened this morning. “How did he find you here?”

“I think he has a tracker on my belongings, or something. We’ve never talked about it. But that doesn’t make total sense, he would have known I was in Isla Rosa, then.”

A few people glance out of their doors as we walk down the hallway. I could give a flying fuck. The door to my flat is still standing open when we arrive. “Have you talked with him recently?”

“No. He knew I was busy, interviewing for the job.”

“Where does he live?”

“He was in L.A. temporarily, where I have been. He sort of follows along.”

“He’s from Isla Rosa?”

“Yes.”

She follows me to the bedroom and quietly watches me dress. I throw some things into a bag as I call Scotch. “Hey, got room for 2 guests for a couple of days?”

There’s a lot of clanging in the background. “Of course. Door’s open.”

“See you in a bit.”

Kate’s frowning deeply when I hang up the call with my brother-in-law. “Why wouldn’t a tracker work if I had gone to Isla Rosa?”

“Depends on the tracker type. He might not have been able to get a signal until you were back here.”

I head toward the kitchen where I get my extra ammo and keys to the car. “Let’s roll.”

Kate’s standing in the middle of the hall. “Wolf, do you think that was just a purse snatching?”

“No. I don’t think this was a coincidence. Someone wanted whatever was in that purse. But they didn’t want to grab you.”

Kate falls completely silent and doesn’t say anything else until we get to Scotch and Simona’s house.

It gives me plenty of time to wonder when the next bomb is going to drop.
