Chapter 49

CHAPTER FORTY-NINE

I’m about four point two seconds away from having a bite of amazing looking home cooked Lasagna in my mouth when my phone rings. I don’t recognize the number.

“Black here.”

“It’s Mikail.”

Simona, Kate, and Scotch are watching me with curiosity. “How did you get my number?”

Mikail snorts, “I got a guy.”

I’m not impressed. But whatever. “Mikail, why are you calling? I’ve got a plate full of food waiting for me to destroy it. But, more importantly, I’m not sure I have anything to say to you.”

Kate grabs my arm. She silently mouths, “Is he okay?”

I nod.

Mikail’s voice is tight. He’s obviously not calling to make small talk. “Kate’s missing purse and her pendant just showed up on Isla Rosa.”

I sit forward, putting my fork back down on my plate. “Keep talking.”

“I followed the pair in the van. It ended up leading me here. Saw them with the bag. And now, I’m watching one of them talk to the antique dealer on the island. I think he’s trying to get the pendant appraised.”

Fuck. This is not good.“Son of a bitch.”

“I’m going to secure Kate’s possessions as soon as he leaves the store.”

“Are you calling the police?”

“That’s a negative. The cops around here are all buddy-buddy with Wilton. I think he’s buying the station house a latte machine or something as much as they kiss his ass. Anyway, what does Kate want me to do with the pendant?”

I push back from the table and motion toward the door. “We’re coming to get it. And, Mikail. Don’t show the thing to anyone. I mean, not another soul. Got it?”

“You have my word. And do me a favor. Tell Kate that I won’t let her down.”

That irritates the fuck out of me. A dangerous, ugly, possessive energy coils its way up my spine, stiffening my body. I disconnect without a goodbye.

“We’re going back to the island. Your mysterious pendant just showed up there. And Mikail’s about to steal it back for you.”

I turn back and find Kate looking at me with concern. “Aren’t you hungry? I’m sure we can wait until you finish.”

“Nope. Lost my appetite.”
