Chapter 52

CHAPTER FIFTY-TWO

I’m a ball of nerves. Tapping my foot, I try not to peek up over the edge of the car window. I can’t believe they made me stay in the car. I thought dealing with Wolf was bad enough, now I’ve got two of them bossing me around.

Grumbling, I dig around for the satellite phone. At least, I can make myself useful for something.

The phone rings through to the number for Sierra that’s saved in the phone. “Hey Sierra, can I speak to Nan?”

“Maybe…” She laughs lightly. “If you promise me that you’re not taking her away. Cole and I want to move her in so she can stay and help with the baby. Those two are thick as thieves.”

I grin. “She’s a natural for sure. Back on Isla Rosa, she’s always got someone’s baby on her lap. And, Sierra, I’m so thankful for all you’ve done to help us. I mean, putting her up at your house has been incredibly kind.”

“You’re welcome. She’s a hoot. We’ve loved it. You’re going to have quite the helper when you and Wolf have your own babies.”

My throat flashes dry like I’m trying to swallow a mouthful of crackers. “I can’t even think about that.”

“You don’t have to. Yet. But you two will have some pretty babies. Headstrong, if they're like Wolf and his sister, but undeniably pretty. I wonder if they’d get your green eyes or his blue—”

A current of something passes through my belly. We did have unprotected sex…. No. I am not going there. With a light laugh, I say, “Stop, please. I’m about to faint over here.”

“Are things going okay?”

“Besides the fact that the guys are inside the palace grounds and I’m hiding in the car? Yep, they are going just fine.”

“Hang in there, cookie, let me go get your grandmother.”

Nan picks up a minute later. “Hey, Kate. Sierra tells me that you and your Knight in shining armor are back on the island.”

A mental image of Wolf charging in on a big black stallion immediately pops into my head. Lord, the man would make a beautiful knight. All broad and strong, with those fierce blue eyes.

I swipe away my lusty visions. “Nan. I have good new. The pendant is back in my safe keeping. Do you know if other people, older people on the island, know about the green stones? Or maybe about a meteorite somewhere on the island?”

“A few, I suspect, do. But it’s never talked about in public. My father said that once the stories of what happens to places that have famous meteors started to get around the island, no one wanted that for Isla Rosa. So, as the generations passed, it was forgotten.”

I nibble on my lip as I consider this. “Do you know if Wilton’s grandparents might have known?”

“It would have been his great grandparents. And my guess is probably yes.”

“This worries me, Nan. Where did they live?”

“That old place off Parrot lane.”

“The old blue bungalow way off the road.”

“That’s the one.”

My body tightens inch by inch. “That really worries me. It’s very close to where I think the green stones were found.”

“I think you’re right. I know you’ve sampled the soil and stones near the sea cliff there, and it’s my best guess for where that meteorite is. I mean, look at the aerial, Kate, it looks like a bowl.”

Google Earth is so not in my grandmother’s wheel house. “How do you know that?”

“I’ve been up in an airplane many times.”

“I know we’re close to figuring out what’s going on. But I don’t know if I can stop Dad from whatever he’s determined to do.

There’s a beat of silence. “Kate, if anyone can think of a way to save that island, it’s you and Wolf.

I recognized him as the perfect man for you the minute I saw him.

He’s sharp. And, of course, he’s handsome as the devil.

Which didn’t hurt, by the way. I knew that anyone who came to your rescue that day, thousands of miles away, would stand by you. Of course, I saw how he looked at you…”

“Nan, I was going to pay Agile to come get us.”

“You made an impression on that company and, more importantly, that man.”

“I guess. But that doesn’t matter now. It’s a little late for that. I am married to the man now, and he’s currently inside the Palace where he and Mikail are shaking Wilton down for information.”

She laughs. “See? I told you he was the man for the job.”

“I sure hope we can make a difference.”

A baby laughs in the background. “My little friend wants me. You’ve got what it takes, Kate. I know you do. I love you. Be safe, and tell Mr. Harrison that I said hello.”

I laugh, “Mr. Harrison… Ooooh. is that who your late night caller is? I saw that golf cart parked at your place a few nights and knew something was up!”

With a sly laugh, she says, “I’ll never tell.” Then she hangs up on me, leaving me shaking my head.
