Chapter 3 #3
I laughed. “Um no, I’m not. I didn’t know what we were and I didn’t want to overthink—"
“Now you know what this is. Shit, I hope you do. When I’ma meet her?” He cut his eyes between me and the road again.
“Give me a date and I’ll set it up.”
“Bet, especially since you got my own people flipping on me for you. I gotta charm ya mother or something.”
I laughed hard, genuinely thrilled at the thought.
For a man to meet my mother meant he was important to me and I to him.
Posydiann was important to me, but I downplayed it, afraid to catch mutual feelings for a man lowkey unavailable to me.
Last night’s conversation, however brief it was, gave me some things to consider.
We ended up at this beautifully decorated restaurant on the pier. It was in an area called Old Briar that could’ve been considered Watertown, but was too far north for that. The little area was so cute and it gave a touristy space.
“I think I’m gonna do the spinach frittata with the sausage links on the side.” I sat back and looked at him beside me.
He was thoroughly looking through the menu. “Boring as fuck, shorty.”
I laughed, then looked back down at the menu. “We can’t all be you. I bet you’re gonna end up with the chorizo green chili omelet, no cheese, with hashbrowns on the side and the red velvet French toast.”
He looked up from the menu, a closed-lip smile on his face. “Especially because we both know you’re gonna have your fork on my plate the entire fucking time.”
I didn’t respond, instead scooting closer to him.
We were seated in the back of the restaurant in a half-moon-shaped booth.
When we went to eat, we never sat up front nor did we sit across from one another.
He was the first man I’d ever gone out with who made sure I was next to him and not across every single time.
Something about it made my heart swell. Posydiann was thoughtful, even when he didn’t count it as being thoughtful.
“Hello, my name is Londy and I’ll be your server today. Can I get you both started with drinks? Or do you already know what you want?” She looked from Posydiann to me, sure to look at me longer than him. Smart girl.
Psy looked at me to order, those serious eyes locked in place.
“He’ll have a mango-orange juice and I will have a watermelon mimosa. And yeah, we’re ready to order.”
Londy nodded, ready when I was.
“For me, a spinach frittata, no cheese, with turkey links on the side. He’ll have the chorizo green chili omelet, hashbrowns on the side, no cheese, and the red velvet French toast with the syrup flight.” By the time I finished, he was stacking our menus to hand to her.
She repeated our orders for confirmation before turning on her heels to put the order in.
I sat back and looped my arm into his massive tattooed one, finding myself intoxicated by his scent. Who was I kidding? Everything about Psy had me intoxicated, even though I tried to play it cool.
“You keep sniffing me in here, you’re gonna have motherfuckers looking at us like we’re crazy, Syn.”
I grinned. “Let them. Maybe they’ll mind their business.”
He chuckled.
I pulled out my phone, seeing Junnie had sent me a reel. When I opened it, all I saw was palm trees and sand, something I yearned for at this point. “I’m going on a vacation, somewhere hot and tropical. Somewhere I don’t have to wear any clothes for real,” I said aloud.
He looked down at me, confused by my sudden outburst.
I slid my phone over to him. “Look what Junnie sent me.”
He picked up the phone, watching the fifteen second reel before his eyes landed on me. “Yeah, aight. Don’t let Junnie get you fucked up
I shook my head. “Junnie can’t get me fucked up. It’s vacation, Psy. Nobody wears clothes for real on tropical vacations. It’s too hot.”
He laughed. “Ain’t never heard of that.”
“Because you’re a man. That’s girl math.” I gave him a duh expression.
“Yo, you and Junnie have my mama saying that shit now. Talking about ‘I’m just a girl.’” He tried to mimic Ms. Ann.
I cackled loudly by mistake, cuffing my stomach. “Leave her alone, because she is.”
“Yeah, aight. Where do you want me to take you on vacation?”
I looked at him, confused. Posydiann wasn’t the vacation taking type. He worked hard and didn’t know the meaning of play. It was funny because Killah’s funny ass took more vacations than a little bit. Junnie was always talking about him.
“You’d take me on vacation?”
“Hell yeah. How else do you think you are about to be somewhere half clothed? You got me fucked up if you think that’s the typa timing you think you on.”
I giggled. “Oh shit, you my man. You're running a strict program, huh.”
“The program has always been strict. Stop acting like you don’t already know this.”
I spent the better part of my day with Posydiann, just basking in his company and talking about whatever under the sun.
This was no different because we always spent time together, but the talking was a lot more.
It showed that he was trying and that was enough for me. His effort was enough…for now.
