Chapter 11
Chapter Eleven
Solenn
Walking into Spencer & Co. that morning, I felt good.
Not just good—I felt ready. I had gotten a full night’s sleep, picked the perfect outfit, and even had time to grab my favorite coffee before heading to work.
Today, I was unstoppable. Maverick Spencer could throw his entire CEO-level intensity at me, and I’d take it like a pro.
That confidence lasted exactly five minutes—right until I reached his office door and someone grabbed my wrist.
I stopped abruptly, nearly spilling my coffee. When I turned, I saw Lillian, one of the senior assistants from another department, looking at me with wide, almost horrified eyes.
“Don’t go in there,” she hissed, her grip tightening on my arm.
I blinked. “Excuse me?”
She leaned in, glancing at the closed door like it was cursed. “He’s in there. With her.”
I stared at her blankly. “Who’s her?”
Lillian’s expression said how do you not know this already? before she whispered, “Nadia Greyson.”
That name sounded vaguely familiar, but I was still drawing a blank. “And… that means?”
Lillian groaned, clearly frustrated by my lack of company gossip knowledge. “She’s practically his fiancée—at least if her family has anything to say about it.”
I raised an eyebrow. “Fiancée?”
“Not officially, but—” She stopped and looked around, making sure no one was listening before lowering her voice even more. “Their families have been trying to merge businesses for years. Her father and Maverick’s have always wanted a partnership, and the easiest way to solidify that? Marriage.”
I scoffed. “I thought this was a finance firm, not a historical drama.”
Lillian smirked but didn’t disagree. “She’s been after him for years, but he’s never entertained the idea. That doesn’t stop her from showing up, though.”
I frowned slightly, glancing back at the office door. It was closed. Completely soundproof. Which meant no one had any idea what was actually happening inside.
Lillian must have read my expression because she exhaled and gave me a pointed look. “Every time she visits, she’s in there for ages. And every time, she leaves looking like she just lost a battle.”
I tilted my head. “And what do people think is happening in there?”
She lifted a brow, smirking. “What do you think?”
I pursed my lips. “That’s a bold assumption.”
She shrugged. “All I’m saying is, she wouldn’t be the first woman to throw herself at him. And honestly? Can you blame her?”
I rolled my eyes. “I’m not entertaining the thought of my boss’s sex life before I’ve even had breakfast.”
Lillian laughed. “Fair. But you should know—Nadia isn’t just some random woman.” She leaned in slightly. “Her family’s rich. Like, untouchable rich. The kind of people who make entire industries move with a single decision. And Nadia? She was raised to think Maverick belongs to her.”
That made my brow furrow. “That’s… unsettling.”
“She’s gorgeous, connected, and used to getting what she wants.” Lillian gave me a knowing look. “And she wants him.”
I looked back at the office door, a little more curious now.
Because if that were true… why wasn’t she winning?
A few minutes passed. The door remained closed. Employees started glancing at me, probably wondering why I was still standing there instead of going inside. If the office was soundproof, that meant no one knew what was happening in there. They could only assume.
And right now? With how long Nadia had been inside? They were assuming something.
I tapped my fingers against my coffee cup, debating my options.
Option A: I could just… walk away and pretend I wasn’t waiting for some corporate soap opera to unfold.
Option B: I could wait just a little longer and see what happened.
I was leaning toward B when the door suddenly swung open.
Nadia Greyson stormed out, heels clicking aggressively against the marble floor, her perfectly styled hair slightly out of place, her expression a mix of frustration and something dangerously close to heartbreak.
She was stunning—that effortless kind of beautiful that made people stop and stare. Dark hair, flawless skin, dasigner dress that fit like it had been custom-made for her (because it probably had). But right now? She looked shaken.
And furious.
She barely glanced at me as she passed, her breath uneven, her jaw tightly clenched like she was fighting every emotion threatening to break through.
Every employee in the vicinity pretended to work harder, avoiding eye contact, but they were all listening.
I watched as she disappeared down the hall, her posture stiff, her entire presence radiating anger.
Lillian exhaled. “Well. That answers that.”
I turned to her. “Answers what, exactly?”
She gave me a smug look. “He shot her down. Again.”
I frowned slightly. “You sound like you’ve seen this before.”
“I have,” she said simply. “And every time, she comes back.”
I didn’t say anything, but I was already trying to piece together the full story. Nadia had power, beauty, and connections. She could have any man she wanted. And yet… she was still chasing Maverick Spencer.
Why?
What made him so unreachable?
I finally turned toward the office door. It was still slightly open, but from this angle, all I could see was Maverick’s dark silhouette behind his desk, completely unbothered.
Whatever had just happened in there… it hadn’t shaken him at all.
I squared my shoulders and stepped inside.
The moment I crossed the threshold, I felt it—the lingering tension in the air, the heaviness of something unresolved. The scent of his signature cologne mixed with coffee, the faint echo of a conversation that had not ended on good terms.
I shut the door behind me and exhaled slowly.
Maverick didn’t look up. He was sitting at his desk, flipping through a document like nothing had just happened. Like Nadia leaving in tears wasn’t even worth acknowledging.
But for some reason, the way his jaw was clenched, the way his fingers gripped the paper a little too tightly, told me otherwise.
