The stall was still damp from last night. They stood under the water without trying to start anything. He washed her back. She washed the dried mess off his stomach. When his cock thickened against her hip he shut the water off himself.

“Not enough time to do that right.”

“I know.”

They dressed in the kitchen light. Cassie’s shirt smelled like the alley. Adam found her underwear under the table and handed it over without a joke. She pulled her jeans on sticky and did not care. At the door he stopped her with two fingers on her wrist.

“Coffee’s on the house if you come through the front. I’ll be the one ringing you up.”

Cassie kissed him once, closed-mouthed, because anything else would put them back on the floor.

“Don’t look at me like you did last night. You’ll get hard behind the register.”

“Too late.”

She went down the front stairs instead of the back. The store smelled like bread and floor cleaner. The vendor was gone. Adam was already behind the counter in the black T-shirt, hair wet, looking like he had not spent the last six hours inside her.

Cassie picked up a bottle of water she did not need and set it on the counter.

“Same as always,” he said, and the corner of his mouth moved the way it had for four months.

She paid cash so there would be no receipt to write on. Their fingers touched over the bills. Neither of them pulled away first.

“Text me when you get off,” she said.

“I get off at seven. You still in town fourteen days?”

“Thirteen and a half now.”

A regular came in behind her and reached for the coffee. Adam’s eyes left her only long enough to nod at the man. Cassie took her water and walked out into actual morning. The parking lot looked ordinary. Her car looked ordinary. She sat behind the wheel and felt him leak into her underwear.

Her phone buzzed before she turned the key.

Stairs are unlocked after seven. Only if you want them.

Cassie looked at the storefront. Through the glass she could see Adam ringing up the regular, same hands, same scar on his knuckle.

She typed back.

I’ll be there.

Cassie came back through the alley at 7:06.

Adam locked the front and met her at the metal door with the same keys in his fist. He looked at her for a full second like he was checking that she had meant the text.

“You sure?” he asked.

“Yes.”

They did not make it to the bed first.

He had her against the inside of the apartment door the way he had the night before, but this time her clothes came off faster because they already knew the buttons.

Cassie shoved his work shirt up. Adam got her jeans to her knees and lifted her.

She wrapped her legs around him and reached between them to put him in.

He pushed into her in one stroke and they both went still, breathing against each other’s mouths.

“I thought about you the whole shift,” he said. “Every time the door chimed I looked up.”

“I sat in my car for ten minutes before I texted.” She rolled her hips. “Don’t be gentle. We already did gentle at dawn.”

He fucked her against the door. Harder than the fridge, shorter than the bed.

The frame rattled. Cassie came first with her nails in his shoulders and her mouth on his neck.

Adam held out until she said, “In me,” and then he did, pulsing into her while he was still standing, his forehead on the wood beside her head.

They stayed joined until his arms started to shake. He carried her to the couch because the bed felt like last night and this was supposed to be something else. Cassie ended up in his lap again, his cock softening inside her, his cum already sliding out of her onto his jeans.

Neither of them talked about the chain or the studio for a full minute.

Adam broke it.

“I get the official word Tuesday. If they keep the night shift I still have this apartment for thirty days. If they don’t, I’m packing boxes while you’re packing a suitcase.”

Cassie traced the scar on his knuckle.

“I’m still getting on the plane. I already spent the deposit.”

“I’m not asking you not to.” He kissed the place under her ear. “I’m asking if the next thirteen nights look like this if you want them to.”

Cassie looked at the dark window. The store sign buzzed below them, closed for the night.

“They look like this,” she said. “Until they don’t. No pretending it’s more than the days we have. No pretending it’s less.”

Adam nodded once.

“Then come back tomorrow after seven. I’ll leave the alley light on.”

Cassie climbed off him. The mess they made was already cooling on her thighs. She pulled her jeans up and did not bother with her underwear. At the door she stopped with her hand on the knob.

“Adam.”

“Yeah.”

“Smile at me tomorrow when I buy the chips. Same as always. I don’t want the regulars to know.”

The corner of his mouth moved.

“Same as always.”

She went down the back stairs. The alley smelled like wet cardboard and old oil. Her phone was already in her hand when she reached the car.

He texted before she started the engine.

Thirteen.

Cassie looked up at the window over the store. The kitchen light was on again.

She texted back.

Thirteen.

Stuffed. Open. Next one.
