Thane’s first subpoena reaches a dissolved law firm and a registered agent who’s been dead for three years.
He spreads the returned records across the conference table at Keller Industries while Nicholas searches the archived Hearthstone documents on the monitor beside him.
The proxy entities behind the recent foundation activity all end in the same kind of absence: closed offices, transferred mailboxes, and people who can no longer answer questions.
“The official trail stops here,” Thane says, turning the final response toward us. “That doesn’t mean the financial trail does.”
Maceo reads through the subpoena return while Blake sits beside him with his cane resting against the table.
Grayson remains near the door, his phone in one hand as he coordinates the temporary restrictions at Ember House without naming Josie or alarming the residents.
Luca sits at my side, close enough that his knee presses against mine beneath the table.
Nicholas enlarges two authorization pages on the screen. One comes from an archived Hearthstone board packet. The other was submitted years later through the proxy foundation connected to Victor and Dorian’s pressure campaign.
The typed names differ. The signatures don’t.
Both begin with the same heavy downstroke and end in a narrow loop that cuts back across the final line. Nicholas points to the repeated pattern without touching the screen.
“The same signature appears on both authorizations,” he says. “We’ll need an examiner if Thane wants to rely on the handwriting itself, but the recurrence gives us another routing point.”
Thane copies both pages into the evidence file. “It also proves the older structure and the current proxy weren’t operating independently.”
I lean closer to the screen and study the mark that appears beneath two different names. The shape is ordinary enough that I could’ve overlooked it among hundreds of pages, but once Nicholas places the documents together, the repetition becomes impossible to ignore.
Maceo turns the archived authorization toward himself. “The older document approved placement transfers. The recent filing authorized movement between two management companies tied to the foundation.”
“The same person was signing for both structures,” Blake says. He traces the date on the newer filing with one finger before glancing toward Thane. “Can the financial routing identify who retained authority after the signer disappeared behind the proxy?”
“That’s what we’re working on now.”
Wilson arrives before Thane opens the next set of records. He steps into the room with his jacket folded over one arm, acknowledges the rest of us with a brief nod, and stops when the signatures appear on the larger screen.
His gaze fixes on the final loop.
For several seconds, he doesn’t move. Then his hand closes around the back of the nearest chair, and he lowers himself into it without taking his eyes from the documents.
“I saw that signature on placement authorizations,” he says. His voice stays level, but his fingers shake against the leather. “Not once. Repeatedly. It appeared after the board approved transfers and sponsor matches.”
Luca shifts his chair closer. He doesn’t ask Wilson what he remembers or make him explain the reaction. He places one hand over Wilson’s where it grips the chair and waits until Wilson looks at him.
Wilson swallows before continuing. “Ward was exposed. Buyers were arrested. My name stayed attached to Hearthstone.” His thumb presses into the edge of the chair hard enough to pale the skin. “Whoever signed those approvals kept collecting awards.”
Luca’s hand remains over his. The room stays quiet while Wilson steadies his breathing, and no one fills the silence with reassurance he didn’t ask for.
Thane waits until Wilson gives him a short nod before opening the financial map.
Payments from the proxy entity move through two management companies before reaching a foundation listed in archived Hearthstone materials as a community partner. The current director’s name sits at the top of the public record.
Alastair Mercer.
The retired councilman’s clean reputation spreads across the screen through charitable boards, management companies, civic initiatives, and legal entities that kept him away from individual transactions without removing his authority over the organizations carrying them.
Nicholas places Alastair’s current foundation filings beside the archived records. The signature pattern appears again on an authorization connected to the same routing chain.
Thane closes the folder once we’ve all seen it. “The accumulated evidence points to Mercer as the person who designed and maintained the placement infrastructure Ward and the other buyers used.”
Alastair has been inside Ember House under a charitable cover.
He’s sat across from Blake during the funding discussion and used Hearthstone’s private terminology as though it belonged in an ordinary conversation about staffing.
Josie’s scholarship, housing, and employment history all route through organizations now tied to the same foundation structure.
We still don’t know every instruction she received or whether Alastair personally placed her at Ember House. We know her access and dependence aren’t separate from him.
My hand closes around the back of Luca’s chair. He feels the movement and shifts against me without turning away from Wilson. His shoulder settles beneath my palm while Maceo pulls the current filings closer and begins marking the points Thane’s team can support without inference.
“How quickly can you move on him?” I ask.
Thane doesn’t flinch at the question. “Not today. We have enough to identify the controlling structure, but not enough to put Mercer in custody without showing him exactly what we’ve found.
I want the handwriting comparison, the financial examiner’s report, and the next subpoena return before we close the distance. ”
Blake turns the financial map toward himself and studies the points where Keller Industries appears. Luca keeps one hand beside Wilson’s while reading the archived placement authorization again.
“When the confrontation happens, I’ll handle the corporate side,” Blake says. He marks Victor, Dorian, and the acquisition filings with the end of his pen. “Luca handles Hearthstone and the survivor evidence. Maceo controls what we can use legally. Grayson handles Ember House and the residents.”
I look toward Thane’s map. “And I control the room.”
Blake’s mouth tightens, but he nods. “Security, exits, and who gets near us. You stay beside us.”
Luca turns toward me and rests his palm against my forearm. “I need him looking at me when the truth reaches him.”
I cover his hand with mine. The arrangement leaves Alastair within reach of my mates, and I hate it. That doesn’t make it the wrong plan.
“I’ll stay beside you,” I say. “Maceo clears every step before we move, and Thane decides when the evidence is ready.”
Thane nods once. “That’s the only version my team can support without compromising the investigation.”
Grayson returns to the table after ending his call. “Blossom has the revised staffing plan. Josie remains on grant reconciliation and scheduling, with no unsupervised intake or external reporting. Residents won’t see added security unless something changes.”
Maceo shifts the financial map toward him so he can review the newly identified routing. “We’ll keep monitoring institutional access and preserve anything she touches through the work system. No one approaches her until Thane clears it.”
Wilson’s fingers have stopped shaking, though his hand remains beneath Luca’s. He studies Alastair’s name for another moment before looking toward Thane.
“He attended public events with Hearthstone partners,” Wilson says. “He never stayed long. He’d arrive after the board was seated and leave before anyone started asking operational questions.”
Thane adds the statement to his notes. “Did you ever see him sign one of these in person?”
“No.” Wilson’s answer comes without hesitation. “The completed authorizations arrived after closed meetings. The signature was already there.”
“That distinction matters,” Maceo says, and Wilson nods.
Grayson brings food none of us remembered to order. He spreads the containers across the side table, rests a hand briefly on Wilson’s shoulder as he passes, and places Luca’s portion directly in front of him before taking the chair beside Maceo.
Maceo slides the signature comparison toward him while Blake steals one of Luca’s fries. Luca elbows him lightly, takes the fry back, bites half, and hands the rest to Wilson without interrupting Thane’s explanation of the next subpoena.
I remain behind Luca’s chair with one hand resting against his shoulder. Grayson’s knee stays pressed to Maceo’s beneath the table, and Blake leans into Luca when the ache in his leg makes him shift. Luca responds by hooking one ankle around Blake’s beneath the chairs while continuing to read.
We discuss warrants, financial examinations, and how to keep Alastair unaware that the signature has identified him. Around the documents, food changes hands, shoulders touch, and no one sits alone with what we’ve learned.
By the time Thane leaves, the next subpoena is already drafted.
Wilson leaves after Maceo copies his statement into the protected case file.
Grayson returns to Ember House to review the security plan with Blossom, and Maceo stays at Keller Industries long enough to preserve the new routing documents.
The house is quieter than usual when we return.
Grayson comes home soon after us and takes the children upstairs, their voices carrying faintly through the hallway while they argue about which book he promised to read first. Maceo joins them after finishing the evidence log, and the noise settles into the familiar rhythm of bathwater, doors opening and closing, and James insisting that one story isn’t enough.
I sit on the edge of the nest without removing my shoes.
