Chapter 14

This weekend, Seb is travelling to USC with Troy. The recruitment team invited him to tour the campus and practice with the basketball team, and he’s very eager to go. Jonathan also received an invitation.

I’ll be spending most of the weekend at home. Gabby is staying with us while Troy and Seb spend the night in Columbia, and Jake is visiting his step siblings Saturday evening.

Once Gabby’s friends pick her up, I follow Dad out to the garage to grab the new shutters and tools for installation.

I assist Dad with the first two sets of shutters, and then he lets me install the final two sets.

I’m much slower than he was, but he’s immensely patient with me, and he tells me more stories of him and his grandfather doing construction during the summers that he spent here.

Zander attempts pizza on the barbecue for supper, and it turns out great. Dad, Gabs, and I enjoy dinner on the patio, and then Gabby drags me into my closet after the dishes are done. “When was the last time you went through your clothes, Summer?”

“Uh, never.” She gets a giddy expression on her face and starts hauling clothes from my closet onto my bed. We spend several hours going through my wardrobe. I didn’t think I had a lot of clothes, but I’ve amassed quite a collection over the past year.

Gabby puts anything I don’t want, doesn’t fit, or is damaged into one pile. She’s going to make new pieces out of them. I get first pick, and the rest she’ll sell. She offers me a cut of the profits, but I tell her to keep all the earnings.

It’s an unexpected but fun evening. We end the night watching a comedy on the couch with Dad.

Seb calls as I’m getting into bed. He likes the campus and met the coaching staff today, but said the dorms were small and smelled like a locker room; however, he’s having fun.

Tomorrow morning he’ll practice with the team and then head home.

I wish him luck with the team, but assure him he doesn’t need it.

Next, I call Jake to check in on him. Colette and Joseph brought him a Yankees ball cap and a New York hoodie, and they’re going to stop by in the morning before flying back. It seems they just wanted to see how he was healing.

I spend most of Sunday afternoon at Alex’s place with him and E, while Gabby shops with her cheerleader friends.

After running on the treadmill, I shower and pull out my AP History notes.

We already have a project, and I want to get started on it while things aren’t busy.

I’ve got a good outline and some research done by the time Seb arrives.

He yells hello before making a beeline for the shower. I catch that he couldn’t shower after practice because they had already checked out of the hotel and he didn’t have shower shoes to use the locker room and Troy kept the windows open on the drive home.

Laughing, I pack up my schoolwork. Seb's fast showering and is soon telling us every detail about USC. The practice went really well, although he didn’t score any points.

He comes with me to visit Jake, and we spend several hours there as Seb tells him all about his weekend and we play video games.
