CHAPTER 42
C HAPTER 42
A fter she returned home, Rae showered and ate a bowl of fruit and yogurt, then conked out for almost two hours. Afterward, she made coffee and scrambled eggs with cheese and scarfed that down. She wished for a couple more days to fully recover, but the flow of events continued to sweep her along, unconcerned with her bruised, drained, weary state.
When she was as ready as possible, she phoned the Fortunate Harbor Hotel and asked for the room of Carl Waters. Once the DC attorney came on the line, Rae used her courtroom voice, solemn and formal, to announce, “I wish to inform you that my clients have established a massive line of credit.”
Waters replied, “Define ‘massive.’ ”
“Large enough to cover all operating expenses for the foreseeable future,” Rae told him. “There are also sufficient funds to keep their North American expansion plans on schedule.” She paused for effect. “And finance any and all necessary court actions to unfreeze their assets. Here in the United States and India. For as long as it takes.”
“I see.”
But she wasn’t finished. “And once we have won these fraudulent legal actions, we will set in motion our own cases to recoup all relevant expenses.”
“Your client’s line of credit,” Waters said. “This is a definite event, already in place?”
“The funds are being processed as we speak,” Rae answered. “They are going into an escrow account I will personally oversee, along with Ms. Morais, the North American chairperson.”
“Am I correct in assuming you are the group’s legal representative?”
“I am.”
Rae could almost hear the gears shifting, rearranging the man’s legal horizons. “In that case, my colleague and I will have a word with our client in regard to next steps. Once that happens, assuming what you say is true, I believe our work here is done.”
