19. Maple #3

Kade stepped forward with his characteristic directness. "The clan is ready for your announcement whenever you are."

Maple felt a flutter of nerves as the reality of the moment hit her.

In a few minutes, she would officially become the Alpha female of this clan.

Through the bond, she felt Rune's steady confidence flowing into her, chasing away her doubts.

His absolute certainty that she was perfect for this role, filled her with warmth.

"Are you ready?" he asked softly.

She looked out over the crowd of faces—all turned toward them with expectation and joy—and felt something settle into place in her chest. This wasn't just about her and Rune anymore. These people were trusting her to help lead them, to stand beside their Alpha and make their clan stronger.

"I'm ready," she said, surprised by how steady her voice sounded.

Rune stepped forward, and the ballroom gradually quieted as conversations died away. Two hundred faces turned toward them with rapt attention, and Maple felt the weight of their collective hope.

"My people," Rune began, his voice carrying easily through the vast space. "Thank you all for joining us tonight for what I know you've been waiting far too long to witness."

A ripple of laughter and agreement moved through the crowd.

"For three hundred years, I convinced myself that isolation was strength. That avoiding the mate bond was wisdom. That I could lead this clan alone and that would be enough." His voice grew warmer, more personal. "I was wrong about all of it."

He turned to look at her, and the love blazing in his blue eyes made her knees weaken.

"This magnificent woman beside me has shown me that love isn't weakness—it's the source of true strength. That partnership doesn't diminish leadership—it enhances it. That fate doesn't trap us—it completes us."

The crowd was absolutely silent now, hanging on every word.

"Maple Westen risked everything to find the truth about our world.

She faced danger without hesitation to protect the people she loves.

She challenged me when I needed challenging and stood by me when I needed support.

She is everything I never knew I was searching for and everything this clan needs in an Alpha female. "

Maple felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes as his words washed over her.

"So tonight, I present to you my beautiful, brilliant, brave fated mate—" He paused, his eyes blazing with possessive pride. "—Maple Westen, soon to become the heart of this clan."

The ballroom exploded into thunderous applause and cheers. Dragon shifters raised glasses in toast while others called out congratulations. The sound was deafening and wonderful and overwhelming all at once.

Maple stepped forward, her heart so full she thought it might burst. She'd never felt such a profound sense of belonging anywhere in her life.

Not with her practical parents who'd never understood her dreams. Not in her academic career where she'd always been the outsider chasing impossible theories.

Nowhere had ever felt like this—like coming home to a family she'd been searching for her entire life without knowing it.

She looked out over the crowd, preparing to speak, to thank them for welcoming her so completely into their world. But then the massive oak doors at the far end of the ballroom burst open with a crash that echoed through the space like a gunshot.

Two dragon enforcers stumbled through the entrance, their faces grim with urgency and fear. Their clothing was torn and dirty, as if they'd raced here at dangerous speed.

"Alpha!" one of them shouted, his voice cutting through the celebration. "The perimeter has been breached!"

The festive atmosphere shattered instantly.

The temperature in the room seemed to rise ten degrees as every dragon shifter present shifted into high alert.

Rune's entire demeanor transformed in a heartbeat.

The warm, loving mate disappeared, replaced by the ancient Alpha whose very presence commanded absolute obedience.

"Explain," Rune commanded.

"Multiple hostiles approaching from the eastern canyon," the second enforcer gasped, still catching his breath. "At least fifty dragons in formation. They'll be here within minutes."

Elias.

The name crashed through Maple's mind with the force of certainty. After everything—the car chase, the attack on Ben, the systematic hunting—he'd finally found them.

Through the mate bond, she felt Rune's protective rage blazing like an inferno. Just when he'd finally surrendered to love, just when he'd opened his heart and claimed his mate publicly, everything he loved was being threatened.

No, she thought fiercely, her own protective instincts surging to match his. Elias can't destroy this. Elias can't take away what we've just found.

This was supposed to be the night of celebration, of new beginnings, and hope for the future.

Instead, it had become the night everything they'd built together would be put to the ultimate test.
