Chapter Six
Luke
Sweat drips down my chest as my feet hit the treadmill.
There is nothing as good as the feeling of a gym session in the morning.
It’s even better when the gym is in my building and I only have to walk down a few flights of stairs.
I needed this, needed to feel the pain of pushing my body to its limit.
Especially after my failed attempt at securing a date a few days ago with the sexy blonde I’ve become obsessed with.
What did she mean when she said she’s no good for me?
If the sex is anything to go by, that woman was made for me.
It’s not just that, though; it’s the way she is, the way she draws me in with her quick wit and flirty personality.
As soon as she declined my offer, Julie, one of our nurses, interrupted us so she could bandage up her wrist. The bloody cock blocker.
I’ll be having words with her when I see her next.
I haven’t been able to get her out of my mind. Fuck, I really am becoming obsessed. Before you know it, I’m going to have a Netflix documentary all about me. ‘The doctor that wouldn’t leave me alone?’ or ‘The one-night stand that wouldn’t fuck off?’ both sound appropriate to me.
Even the thought of going to work is exciting for me, on the off chance that I see her there.
Which is fucking crazy, who the hell would wish for someone to come into the emergency department just to see them?
However, she does have to come back for her check-up soon, which I will make sure is overseen by me.
The buzzing from my watch jolts me out of my thoughts.
Dom – Coffee at 7 am?
Dom knows me well enough not to need a reply. Whenever we’re on shift together, we go for a coffee at the café facing the hospital before handover. There's only so much shit coffee I can drink from the staff room to fuel me for the day.
After showering off all of the sweat and quickly changing, I make my way over to meet Dom, but when I get there, he isn’t alone. Our good friend Will is with him, one of the nurses from the department.
“Good morning, lovey. I got you a flat white,” Will says as I join them.
Will is possibly the most extroverted person I know.
It’s why he's so good at his job. He can make any patient feel at ease with one simple sentence.
He is quite striking, though, as he is one of the manliest men I have ever laid eyes on, yet also the most eccentric one, too.
Whereas Dom is his opposite, always primped and preened to perfection, but the way he speaks is contradictory.
The pair of them tried dating a few months back, but nothing ever came from it. Which is possibly more to do with the hours we work than anything else. They still flirt every spare second they get.
“You are the best,” I tell him. “How are you both this fine morning?”
“Don’t even start with idle chit chat. Dom has been filling me in on the first girl to have ever turned you down,” Will raises a brow, mocking me as usual. “Spill the tea. What did you do to scare her off?”
“Isn't being himself enough?” Dom laughs.
“The pair of you can do one,” I grunt, rolling my eyes. “But honestly, I don’t know. She did the whole, it's not you, it's me thing. I don’t think I believe her, though.”
“No, she did not!” Will sucks in a breath.
“Yep. Not those words exactly, but she may as well have.”
“What words did she use?” He asks.
I take a second to piece together what she said exactly. It did feel like more of a brush-off than being true.
“I’m not good for you, trust me.”
“She could be being honest? Maybe she isn’t any good for you, she could be bad news,” Dom shrugs, clearly not realising just how much I'm taken by this girl.
With the way she has left me feeling, I’d watch her burn the world down and stand beside her with her hand in mine. And that is a scary thought. Definitely not the thoughts a doctor should be having.
Surely that’s just being dramatic. There is no way she is a murderer, thief or even a generally bad human being. She was funny and kind, sexy and confident. The only thing that plays on my mind is how sad she looked when she entered the bar that night.
I’d love to know what is going through that pretty little head of hers. To learn all the ins and outs of her. But she has to give me a bloody chance to get to know her first.
“Hello! Earth to Luke?” Will says, waving a hand in front of my face. “What can we do to help? Because you clearly need all the help you can get.”
“Honestly, I don’t know.”
