Chapter 11 Pretending Feels Too Real #2

His voice carried an unexpected warmth.

He looked at Jamie for just a second before continuing.

"He's..."

The prepared words disappeared completely.

Instead, the truth came out.

"...someone very important to me."

Silence followed for only a heartbeat.

No one else seemed to notice.

Jamie did.

So did Alex.

Because neither of them had expected those words.

And neither of them had expected just how true they felt.

The Dance That Changed Everything

After introducing Jamie to his family, the rest of the evening unfolded with surprising ease.

Alex had spent the entire drive to the Lakeside Club preparing himself for suspicious questions, awkward conversations, and the possibility that one careless mistake would expose their little arrangement.

None of that happened.

Instead, everything felt... natural.

His relatives welcomed Jamie warmly.

His parents seemed genuinely pleased to finally meet the man whose name had quietly appeared in so many of Alex's stories over the past year.

His grandmother immediately insisted that Jamie sit beside her during dinner because, according to her, "the interesting people should never be hidden at the far end of the table."

Jamie laughed and accepted without hesitation.

Within minutes, he was asking thoughtful questions about old family recipes while Alex's grandmother happily shared stories from fifty years earlier.

Alex watched the conversation with quiet amazement.

Jamie had a gift for making people feel important.

He listened with genuine interest.

He remembered details.

He made eye contact when someone spoke and never interrupted.

The same qualities that had quietly changed Alex's life were now charming his entire family.

"You've gone quiet."

Emma appeared beside her brother carrying two glasses of sparkling water.

Alex accepted one absentmindedly.

"I'm listening."

Emma followed his gaze toward Jamie, who was laughing with Alex's grandparents.

"No," she said with a knowing smile.

"You're staring."

"I am not."

"You've looked at him at least ten times in the last five minutes."

Alex frowned.

"Have I?"

Emma laughed.

"You really don't notice, do you?"

Before Alex could answer, Jamie glanced across the room.

Their eyes met instantly.

Jamie smiled.

Without thinking, Alex smiled back.

Emma quietly sipped her drink.

"I rest my case."

Dinner was served shortly afterward.

The ballroom buzzed with easy conversation while waiters carried elegant dishes from table to table.

Alex found himself sitting between Jamie and his father.

Normally, family dinners required effort.

He had to think about conversation topics.

He carefully avoided discussions that might lead to questions about his personal life.

Tonight felt different.

Whenever conversation slowed, Jamie somehow revived it effortlessly.

He asked Alex's father about the company's earliest construction projects.

He listened attentively while Alex's mother shared stories about renovating their first home.

He even managed to convince Alex's notoriously serious uncle to laugh while discussing disastrous attempts at gardening.

Watching Jamie fit so naturally into his family's world made something warm settle quietly inside Alex's chest.

At one point, Jamie reached for the breadbasket at exactly the same moment Alex did.

Their fingers brushed lightly.

Jamie smiled apologetically.

"Sorry."

"You first."

Jamie shook his head.

"You've barely eaten."

Alex smiled.

"I've been distracted."

Jamie looked at him curiously.

"By what?"

Alex opened his mouth.

The honest answer nearly escaped before he caught himself.

By you.

Instead, he simply shrugged.

"Long week."

Jamie accepted the explanation, though his smile suggested he wasn't entirely convinced.

Later, while dessert was being served, Alex noticed Jamie quietly smoothing the front of his tie.

The knot had slipped slightly to one side.

Without thinking, Alex reached over.

"Hold still."

Jamie blinked.

"What?"

"Your tie."

Jamie instinctively stood a little straighter.

Alex gently loosened the knot before tightening it again with practiced movements.

"You've been teaching me to wear these properly for months."

Alex smiled.

"I guess I finally learned."

Jamie laughed softly.

"You did."

Several relatives watched the exchange with unmistakable amusement.

Alex's aunt leaned toward Margaret Carter.

"They're adorable."

Margaret simply smiled into her teacup.

Alex remained completely unaware of the audience surrounding him.

His entire attention rested on making sure Jamie's tie sat perfectly against his collar.

"There."

He stepped back.

"Better."

Jamie looked down.

"Thank you."

"It would've bothered me all evening."

"I know."

Emma whispered loudly enough for the entire table to hear.

"That wasn't a very convincing fake gesture."

Jamie immediately covered his face, trying not to laugh.

Alex looked at his sister.

"What?"

Emma smiled innocently.

"Nothing."

"No."

Alex narrowed his eyes.

"It definitely wasn't nothing."

She only grinned.

The evening continued with speeches celebrating Alex's parents' anniversary.

Stories of enduring love filled the ballroom.

Commitment.

Partnership.

Choosing each other every day.

Alex found himself listening more carefully than usual.

His father stood to thank everyone for attending.

Near the end of his speech, he looked toward Alex and Jamie.

"I hope all of you find someone who makes ordinary days feel extraordinary."
