Chapter 14 Finally Us #2

It no longer felt like the careful silence of two friends afraid to cross a line.

It was the quiet contentment of two people who no longer had to hide anything.

Alex reached over and intertwined their fingers.

“I’ve been thinking.”

Jamie smiled.

“That usually means something serious.”

“It is.”

Jamie gave him his full attention.

“I spent so much time believing love had to be dramatic.”

Alex looked around the apartment.

“I thought it would arrive all at once.”

He laughed quietly.

“Instead, it showed up one grocery list at a time.”

Jamie squeezed his hand.

“One breakfast at a time.”

“One conversation on the balcony.”

“One movie night.”

“One rainy afternoon.”

Jamie rested his head against Alex’s shoulder.

“I liked falling in love with you that way.”

“So did I.”

The apartment glowed with warm lamplight.

Outside, the city continued its busy rhythm, but inside their home everything felt peaceful.

Jamie looked toward his grandmother’s recipe notebook resting on the kitchen shelf.

“I wish she could see this.”

Alex followed his gaze.

“I think she’d tell you she already does.”

Jamie’s eyes became misty.

“She always said the right person would make life feel lighter.”

Alex smiled.

“Was she right?”

Jamie turned back toward him.

“You make ordinary days my favorite days.”

Alex leaned forward and kissed Jamie gently.

There was no uncertainty this time.

No hesitation.

The kiss was slow and unhurried, carrying months of quiet longing and the comfort of finally belonging to one another.

When they separated, Alex rested his forehead against Jamie’s.

“You’re beautiful.”

Jamie’s cheeks warmed.

“You’ve told me that before.”

“I haven’t told you enough.”

Jamie laughed softly.

“You really are making up for lost time.”

“I plan to.”

They stayed close, talking about everything they had never been brave enough to say before.

Jamie admitted that he had fallen in love somewhere between their late-night balcony conversations and the weekend at the cabin.

“I kept telling myself it would pass,” he confessed.

“It never did.”

Alex smiled sadly.

“I’m sorry I didn’t see it sooner.”

“You weren’t ready.”

“No.”

Alex shook his head.

“I wasn’t.”

He looked into Jamie’s eyes.

“But I never want you to think I didn’t love every version of you.”

Jamie frowned slightly.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean the Jamie who fusses over herbs.”

Alex smiled.

“The Jamie who cries during animated movies but insists it’s because of the music.”

Jamie laughed through his embarrassment.

“That happened once.”

“It happened three times.”

Jamie nudged his shoulder.

“You’re impossible.”

“I mean the Jamie who fills every room with plants.”

“The Jamie who bakes bread when he’s worried.”

“The Jamie who remembers everyone’s birthday.”

“The Jamie who dreams so big that he still believes an old notebook can become a published cookbook.”

Jamie’s smile slowly faded into something more emotional.

“And...”

Alex gently brushed his thumb across Jamie’s cheek.

“I love the Jamie who sometimes worries he’s too soft.”

“The Jamie who thought loving someone openly might be too much.”

“The Jamie who wondered if being himself would ever be enough.”

His voice became quiet.

“You never needed to become someone else for me.”

Jamie’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was so afraid.”

“I know.”

“I thought maybe...”

He struggled to finish the sentence.

“...maybe I loved you in ways you’d never want.”

Alex immediately shook his head.

“I want every piece of you.”

Jamie closed his eyes for a moment, overwhelmed.

Alex wrapped his arms around him, holding him carefully as Jamie rested against his chest.

For a long time they simply stayed like that, letting the silence speak for them.

Eventually, they wandered down the hallway together.

The apartment was dark except for the bedside lamp Alex switched on before turning back toward Jamie.

Jamie looked unexpectedly nervous.

Alex noticed immediately.

“What is it?”

Jamie smiled shyly.

“This is our first night.”

“It is.”

“I don’t want to rush anything.”

Alex stepped closer and gently took both of Jamie’s hands.

“We won’t.”

His answer was immediate and certain.

“We have all the time in the world.”

Jamie’s shoulders relaxed.

“I’ve waited this long.”

Alex smiled warmly.

“So have I.”

He kissed Jamie’s forehead.

“Tonight isn’t about proving anything.”

“It’s about finally being where we both wanted to be.”

Jamie nodded.

Together they settled into the quiet comfort of the evening, sharing gentle affection, whispered conversations, and moments of closeness that deepened the trust they had spent months building.

There was no pressure.

No expectations beyond being present with each other.

It felt less like the beginning of something unfamiliar and more like coming home after a very long journey.

Much later, as the apartment fell completely silent, they lay beneath the blankets facing one another.

Alex absentmindedly traced small circles across the back of Jamie’s hand.

“I need to tell you one more thing.”

Jamie looked at him sleepily.

“What is it?”

Alex’s expression became serious.

“The day I said you acted too much like a wife...”

Jamie’s smile faded slightly.

“I remember.”

“I do too.”

Alex reached up and gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind Jamie’s ear.

“I can’t change that day.”

“But I can promise you something.”

Jamie listened quietly.

“I will never make you question your place in my life again.”

His voice was steady.

“Not with careless words.”

“Not with silence.”

“Not with fear.”

He squeezed Jamie’s hand.

“If something scares me, I’ll tell you.”

“If I’m confused, I’ll talk to you.”

“And if I love you...”

A gentle smile appeared on his face.

“...I’ll never hide it again.”

Jamie’s eyes shimmered.

“I believe you.”

Alex leaned over and kissed his forehead one last time.

“I hope so.”

“I do.”

Jamie settled closer, resting comfortably against Alex as strong, familiar arms wrapped around him.

For months he had wondered if he was too emotional.

Too gentle.

Too openly loving.

Now, listening to Alex’s steady heartbeat beneath his ear, every old fear slowly disappeared.

He wasn’t loved despite who he was.

He was loved because of who he was.

With that comforting thought warming his heart, Jamie closed his eyes.

Wrapped safely in Alex’s embrace, he drifted into sleep believing something he had waited his whole life to believe.

He was loved completely.

Exactly as he was.
