Chapter 16 A Miracle
Unexpected News
Jamie had always considered himself an early riser.
No matter how late he went to bed, he usually woke before the alarm with enough energy to start bread dough, water the herbs on the balcony, and have breakfast ready before Alex wandered sleepily into the kitchen asking whether coffee already existed.
Lately, that routine had begun to change.
It started with little things.
He slept through his alarm one Monday morning.
He blamed a busy weekend.
On Tuesday he nearly burned a batch of blueberry muffins because he became distracted halfway through measuring ingredients.
He laughed at himself and promised to get more sleep.
By Wednesday afternoon, he found himself leaning against the kitchen counter while waiting for water to boil, feeling so unusually tired that simply standing seemed like too much effort.
Alex noticed immediately.
“You okay?”
Jamie looked up from the kettle and forced a smile.
“Just tired.”
“You’ve said that three days in a row.”
“I’ve been editing late.”
Alex walked closer.
“And baking.”
“And photographing recipes.”
“And helping me review apartment listings for the new Riverside project.”
Jamie smiled.
“I’ve been a little busy.”
“A little?”
Alex gently rested the back of his hand against Jamie’s forehead.
“You don’t feel warm.”
“I’m not sick.”
“You don’t look convinced.”
Jamie laughed softly.
“I’ll be fine after a good night’s sleep.”
Alex studied him for another moment.
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
Alex wasn’t entirely convinced.
Over the next few days, Jamie’s exhaustion only grew worse.
Simple chores that normally brought him joy suddenly felt strangely difficult.
His appetite changed without warning.
One afternoon he happily ate half a jar of pickled vegetables while standing in front of the refrigerator.
The following evening, the smell of roasted garlic—normally one of his favorite scents—made his stomach turn unexpectedly.
He barely reached the sink before the wave of nausea passed.
Alex rushed into the kitchen.
“Jamie?”
Jamie held up one hand.
“I’m okay.”
“You were just sick.”
“I know.”
Alex frowned.
“That’s not normal.”
Jamie rinsed his face with cool water before looking up.
“I probably caught some kind of stomach bug.”
“You’ve been saying that for almost a week.”
Jamie sighed.
“I know.”
Alex wrapped an arm around his shoulders.
“I think you should see Dr. Patel.”
Jamie smiled reassuringly.
“It’s probably nothing.”
“Maybe.”
Alex kissed his forehead gently.
“But I’d rather hear a doctor tell us it’s nothing than spend another week worrying.”
Jamie couldn’t argue with that.
The following morning he scheduled an appointment.
Dr. Anita Patel had been his physician for several years.
She greeted Jamie with her usual warm smile.
“It’s good to see you.”
Jamie laughed.
“I’d rather visit socially.”
“I hear that from almost everyone.”
She reviewed his chart before looking back at him.
“So...”
“What brings you in today?”
Jamie described the past week.
The exhaustion.
The nausea.
The sudden food cravings followed by complete loss of appetite.
Dr. Patel listened carefully without interrupting.
When he finished, she nodded thoughtfully.
“Any fever?”
“No.”
“Pain?”
“No.”
“Recent illness?”
“Nothing significant.”
She made a few notes before asking another question.
“You and your partner are still participating in the reproductive health program?”
Jamie nodded.
“Yes.”
Before beginning their relationship, Jamie and Alex had both completed the routine reproductive compatibility consultations recommended for couples who hoped to have children someday.
In their world, advanced reproductive medicine had become a normal part of healthcare decades earlier.
Most people enrolled long before they were actually ready to start a family.
It made future options safer and far more successful.
Jamie had never imagined those consultations would matter anytime soon.
“We’ll run a few routine tests,” Dr. Patel said kindly.
“Just to rule things out.”
Jamie smiled with relief.
“Thank you.”
The nurse collected blood samples.
A few additional scans followed.
None of it seemed unusual.
Jamie expected to be told he was exhausted from working too much.
He even mentally planned how he would apologize to Alex for making him worry.
Nearly an hour later, Dr. Patel returned carrying a tablet.
Her expression was calm.
Gentle.
Almost unusually gentle.
She closed the examination room door before sitting across from Jamie.
“How are you feeling?”
Jamie smiled uncertainly.
“A little nervous.”
“That’s understandable.”
She looked down briefly at the results before meeting his eyes again.
“Jamie...”
Her voice carried quiet warmth.
“...there’s nothing seriously wrong.”
Jamie let out the breath he hadn’t realized he was holding.
“Oh.”
“Your overall health looks excellent.”
“That’s good.”
“It is.”
Another brief pause followed.
Long enough for Jamie to notice.
His heartbeat quietly quickened.
“But?”
Dr. Patel smiled.
“The tests gave us an answer we weren’t expecting.”
Jamie frowned.
“What kind of answer?”
She turned the tablet toward him.
Several medical images appeared on the screen.
Jamie recognized almost none of them.
“Your hormone levels are consistent with early gestation.”
He blinked.
“I’m sorry?”
Dr. Patel spoke slowly, making sure he understood every word.
“Jamie...”
“...you’re pregnant.”
The room became completely silent.
He stared at her.
Certain he had misunderstood.
“I...”
He laughed nervously.
“I think you have the wrong chart.”
She gently shook her head.
“I don’t.”
Jamie looked at the screen again.
Then back at her.
“But...”
His voice barely existed.
“...already?”
Dr. Patel nodded.
“It appears to be very early.”
She smiled warmly.
“Congratulations.”
Jamie couldn’t respond.
His mind refused to catch up with what he had just heard.
Pregnant.
The word echoed over and over inside his head.
He thought about the conversations he and Alex had shared only weeks earlier.
Someday.
Children.
Family.
Passing down his grandmother’s recipes.
Those dreams had always belonged to a distant future.
Not now.
Not this soon.
“I don’t understand.”
Dr. Patel nodded sympathetically.
“That’s perfectly normal.”
She spent the next several minutes carefully explaining the results.
The reproductive treatment program they had both enrolled in had worked exactly as intended.
The early symptoms matched the timeline.
Everything currently suggested a healthy pregnancy.
“We’ll confirm everything with an ultrasound.”
She printed several documents before handing Jamie a small appointment card.
“Your first scan is next week.”
Jamie accepted it automatically.
His hands trembled slightly.
“You should bring your partner if possible.”
Jamie looked down at the appointment.
Partner.
Alex.
The thought finally broke through the overwhelming shock.
Alex.
A small, emotional laugh escaped him.
Alex was going to become a father.
Tears suddenly blurred Jamie’s vision.
Dr. Patel quietly handed him a box of tissues.
“It can feel overwhelming.”
Jamie nodded while wiping his eyes.
“I’ve dreamed about having a family for so long.”
His smile trembled.
“I just...”
He looked down again.
“...I never imagined hearing these words today.”
Dr. Patel smiled kindly.
“Take your time.”
“There isn’t any rush.”
After discussing nutrition, follow-up appointments, and the usual early recommendations, Jamie eventually left the clinic carrying a folder of information he barely remembered receiving.
Outside, the afternoon sun warmed the pavement.
People hurried along the sidewalk with coffees in hand.
Cars passed.
Someone laughed across the street.
The whole world looked exactly the same.
Yet everything had changed.
Jamie sat down on a quiet bench beneath a flowering tree.
He opened the folder again.
The appointment card rested neatly inside.
First Ultrasound
He traced the printed words with his thumb.
A family.
His family.
The happiness arrived first.
Bright.
Overwhelming.
Almost impossible to contain.
Then came fear.
Would Alex be ready?
Would he think it was too soon?
Would he panic?
Jamie knew how deeply Alex loved him.
He also knew how seriously Alex took every responsibility in his life.
This wasn’t just exciting news.
It would change everything.
He carefully closed the folder and held it against his chest.
A smile tugged at his lips even as nervous tears gathered in his eyes.
For months, they had dreamed together about someday.
Now someday had quietly arrived.
Sitting alone beneath the afternoon sky with an ultrasound appointment in his hand, Jamie took a slow, steady breath.
There was only one question left.
How would Alex react when he learned they were going to become a family?
We’re Having a Baby
Jamie stood outside the apartment door for almost five minutes.
The folder in his hands suddenly felt heavier than it had at the clinic.
He had imagined telling Alex about countless things over the past year.
The cookbook proposal.
His first magazine cover.
The first time someone recognized his recipes.
He had never imagined carrying home news that would change both of their lives forever.
He unlocked the door quietly.
The familiar scent of coffee drifted through the apartment.
Alex was already home.
Jamie smiled despite his nerves.
Alex almost never made it home before him on weekdays.
He stepped inside and found Alex standing in the kitchen, rolling up the sleeves of his shirt while chopping vegetables.
The sight made Jamie’s heart ache with affection.
Alex looked up immediately.
“There you are.”
His smile appeared the moment he saw Jamie.
“I was starting to wonder if your appointment ran late.”
“It did.”
Alex immediately noticed something in Jamie’s expression.
The knife was set down without another thought.
“Hey.”
He walked around the kitchen island.
“Talk to me.”
Jamie tried to smile.
Instead, his eyes filled with tears.
Alex’s expression changed instantly.
“Jamie?”
Without saying a word, Jamie held out the folder.
Alex accepted it slowly.
“What is this?”
“I...”
Jamie’s voice trembled.
“I need you to read it.”
Alex frowned slightly before opening the folder.
