Chapter 19 The Family We Chose
Husband
The wedding was never meant to be extravagant.
Jamie had suggested renting a grand ballroom.
Alex had suggested a beautiful hotel overlooking the city.
In the end, they both realized they wanted the same thing.
Not a perfect venue.
Not hundreds of guests.
Just the people who had loved them from the very beginning.
They chose a botanical garden on the edge of the city.
It was peaceful, filled with flowering trees, winding stone paths, and a small glass pavilion that caught the morning sunlight.
Jamie loved it the moment they visited.
“It feels alive,” he had whispered.
Alex had smiled.
“So does our family.”
The morning of the ceremony arrived with clear blue skies and a gentle breeze that carried the scent of roses through the gardens.
Alex stood inside the small dressing room, adjusting his tie for what felt like the tenth time.
His hands were unusually unsteady.
Emma watched from the doorway with an amused smile.
“I’ve never seen you this nervous.”
“I’m not nervous.”
She folded her arms.
“You’ve tied that tie six times.”
“I like symmetry.”
“You like pretending you’re calm.”
Alex sighed dramatically.
“Is it obvious?”
Emma laughed.
“Only to everyone.”
She walked over and straightened his collar.
“You know Jamie is probably just as nervous.”
“I know.”
Emma smiled warmly.
“He’s been waiting for this day for a long time.”
Alex looked down at the wedding band resting in the small velvet box.
“So have I.”
Emma gently squeezed his shoulder.
“Dad would be proud.”
Alex looked up.
“So would Mom.”
His parents had changed more than he ever expected.
The months leading up to the wedding had softened old misunderstandings.
They had watched Jamie care for Alex with unwavering love.
They had celebrated the pregnancy with genuine excitement.
Some of their earliest expectations had quietly disappeared, replaced by something much stronger.
Acceptance.
Love.
Family.
Alex smiled.
“I think they’d both say I finally figured out what matters.”
Emma grinned.
“Only because Jamie helped you.”
Alex laughed.
“That’s probably true.”
Across the garden, Jamie stood beside Mrs. Harper in another small room overlooking the flowers.
His hands rested protectively over the gentle curve of his growing stomach.
The pregnancy had begun to show clearly now.
Not enough to slow him down.
Just enough to remind everyone that another little member of the family would soon arrive.
Mrs. Harper adjusted the lapel of Jamie’s cream-colored suit before stepping back.
“There.”
Jamie looked at his reflection.
“I don’t know if I’ve ever looked this nice.”
Mrs. Harper smiled affectionately.
“My dear.”
“You’ve never looked happier.”
Jamie touched the engagement ring on his finger.
“I keep worrying I’ll wake up.”
“And discover all of this was a dream.”
Mrs. Harper gently took both of his hands.
“Real love often feels that way.”
Jamie smiled.
“I wish my grandmother could be here.”
Mrs. Harper reached into her handbag before pulling out Jamie’s grandmother’s recipe notebook.
“I thought this belonged with you today.”
Jamie’s breath caught.
He carefully accepted the notebook.
“You brought it.”
“I thought your grandmother deserved a front-row seat.”
Jamie’s eyes filled with grateful tears.
He hugged the notebook gently against his chest.
“Thank you.”
A few minutes later, soft music drifted through the garden.
Guests quietly found their seats.
Marcus stood near the front with Daniel, both smiling proudly.
Emma took her place beside Alex.
Mrs. Harper walked Jamie down the flower-lined path.
The moment Alex saw Jamie, the entire world seemed to disappear.
The elegant cream suit.
The nervous smile.
The love shining unmistakably in Jamie’s eyes.
Everything else faded into the background.
Emma leaned closer.
“You forgot to breathe.”
Alex laughed quietly.
“I think I did.”
Jamie reached him a few moments later.
Neither spoke immediately.
They simply smiled at one another.
The officiant welcomed everyone before beginning the ceremony.
“We are gathered today to celebrate not only a marriage, but a friendship that quietly became the foundation of a family.”
Jamie reached for Alex’s hand.
Their fingers intertwined naturally.
Just as they always had.
The officiant smiled.
“Alex.”
“You may share your vows.”
Alex looked at Jamie for several long seconds before speaking.
“I spent years believing success was measured by buildings.”
A gentle laugh moved through the guests.
“I thought happiness came after the next promotion.”
“The next achievement.”
“The next goal.”
He smiled warmly.
“Then my kitchen flooded.”
Soft laughter spread again.
Alex never looked away from Jamie.
“A stranger walked into my apartment carrying towels.”
“He made coffee.”
“He quietly filled empty spaces in my life that I didn’t even know existed.”
Jamie’s eyes shimmered.
Alex’s own voice grew softer.
“You taught me that love isn’t loud.”
“It’s remembering how someone takes their coffee.”
“It’s sitting beside them when they’re sick.”
“It’s believing in their dreams before they believe in themselves.”
He reached for Jamie’s other hand.
“You have been my safest place.”
“My greatest comfort.”
“My favorite hello.”
“My hardest goodbye.”
He smiled through happy tears.
“And today...”
His voice trembled.
“...I get to call you my husband.”
Jamie’s tears finally escaped.
Alex gently wiped one away with his thumb.
“I promise to choose you.”
“Every ordinary morning.”
“Every difficult day.”
“Every joyful celebration.”
“I promise to keep learning your grandmother’s recipes.”
“I promise to cheer louder than anyone when your cookbook fills bookstore shelves.”
“I promise to love our child with everything I have.”
He swallowed carefully.
“And most of all...”
His smile became wonderfully soft.
“...I promise never to forget that meeting you has always been the greatest blessing of my life.”
The garden fell completely silent.
Jamie smiled through tears that refused to stop.
When it was his turn to speak, his voice shook with emotion.
“You once told me I became your home.”
He squeezed Alex’s hands gently.
“The truth is...”
“I found mine the day you accepted a cup of coffee from a stranger.”
Many of the guests quietly wiped away tears.
Emma openly cried without apology.
Marcus slipped an arm around Daniel’s shoulders.
Mrs. Harper smiled proudly through shining eyes.
The vows ended with quiet laughter, heartfelt promises, and two simple words spoken with complete certainty.
“I do.”
Wedding bands replaced engagement rings.
The officiant smiled warmly.
“I now have the great honor of introducing...”
He paused dramatically.
“...the husbands.”
Applause echoed throughout the garden.
Alex gently kissed Jamie while friends and family celebrated around them.
It wasn’t a dramatic kiss.
It didn’t need to be.
It carried months of friendship.
Years of quiet hope.
A lifetime of promises.
The reception took place beneath strings of warm lights hanging between old oak trees.
Long wooden tables overflowed with flowers, fresh bread, and many of the recipes from Jamie’s grandmother’s notebook.
His cookbook editor attended as well, smiling proudly after announcing that Jamie’s manuscript had officially been approved for publication.
Another dream had quietly become reality.
Late in the evening, after speeches, laughter, and dancing, Alex and Jamie slipped away from the crowd for a few peaceful moments beneath the stars.
Jamie rested comfortably against Alex’s shoulder.
“I don’t think today could possibly become more perfect.”
Alex smiled.
“I was just thinking the same thing.”
Jamie suddenly paused.
His hand instinctively moved to his stomach.
Alex noticed immediately.
“What is it?”
Jamie looked up with wide eyes.
“I think...”
He smiled uncertainly.
“...wait.”
Another gentle movement answered him.
Stronger this time.
Jamie’s face lit up.
“Alex.”
Without another word, Jamie gently guided Alex’s hand to the side of his stomach.
For a heartbeat, nothing happened.
Then...
A tiny but unmistakable kick pressed gently against Alex’s waiting palm.
Alex froze completely.
His eyes widened before immediately filling with tears.
“Our baby...”
His voice barely existed.
Jamie laughed through his own tears.
“I know.”
Another tiny kick followed.
Alex let out an emotional laugh.
“They’re celebrating with us.”
Jamie nodded happily.
“I think they are.”
Alex rested his forehead against Jamie’s.
Around them, music continued to drift through the warm evening air.
Friends laughed.
Family celebrated.
Fairy lights glowed softly among the trees.
But for one perfect moment, none of it mattered.
There were only three heartbeats sharing the same beautiful future.
And Alex knew with absolute certainty that the family they had chosen had become the greatest gift either of them would ever receive.
One More Recipe
The first morning of married life began exactly the way both of them had secretly hoped it would.
There were no grand plans.
No packed schedule.
No honeymoon flight waiting at the airport.
Instead, sunlight drifted through the kitchen windows while fresh coffee brewed quietly in the background.
Alex wandered into the kitchen wearing an old T-shirt and comfortable pajama pants, his wedding ring catching the morning light as he rubbed the sleep from his eyes.
Jamie looked up from the mixing bowl on the counter and smiled.
“Good morning, husband.”
Alex stopped walking.
He looked at Jamie for a long moment before a slow grin spread across his face.
“I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of hearing that.”
Jamie laughed.
“I was hoping you’d say that.”
Alex crossed the kitchen and wrapped both arms carefully around Jamie.
His growing stomach rested comfortably between them.
Alex had become almost instinctively protective over the past few months.
Every hug.
Every kiss.
Every touch carried quiet awareness of the little life they were waiting to meet.
He kissed Jamie gently.
“Good morning, my husband.”
Jamie smiled against his lips.
“I like that even more.”
Alex rested his forehead against Jamie’s.
“How are both of my favorite people this morning?”
Jamie laughed.
“We’re hungry.”
