Chapter 20 Friend Like a Wife
Our Greatest Gift
The drive to the hospital felt both impossibly fast and endlessly slow.
Jamie held Alex's hand through every contraction, breathing exactly the way Dr. Patel had taught them during their prenatal classes.
Alex drove with complete concentration, but every few seconds he glanced toward Jamie.
"You okay?"
Jamie smiled despite the discomfort.
"I will be."
Another contraction tightened across his abdomen.
He squeezed Alex's hand.
"Our baby is impatient."
Alex laughed nervously.
"I think they inherited that from me."
"They definitely didn't inherit patience from me."
By the time they reached the maternity ward, Emma, Marcus, Daniel, and Mrs. Harper were already waiting in the lobby.
Emma hurried toward them before stopping herself.
She looked at Jamie with wide, excited eyes.
"Is it really happening?"
Jamie nodded, breathing carefully.
"It looks that way."
Emma hugged him as gently as she could.
"We'll be right here."
Mrs. Harper stepped forward next.
She took Jamie's hands between her own.
"My dear."
Her smile trembled with emotion.
"You were born to be loved."
She looked down at Jamie's stomach before smiling again.
"And so was this little one."
Jamie's eyes filled with tears.
"Thank you."
Alex rested one hand against Jamie's back.
"We'll come get you as soon as we can."
Marcus grinned.
"We're not going anywhere."
Daniel nodded.
"We'll keep everyone distracted until then."
Jamie smiled gratefully before a nurse gently guided him toward the labor suite.
The room was quiet.
Warm lighting softened the space, and large windows overlooked the city skyline.
Dr. Patel entered a few moments later with her usual reassuring smile.
"I had a feeling I'd be seeing you tonight."
Jamie laughed weakly.
"So did I."
She completed the examination before looking at both of them.
"Everything is progressing well."
She smiled.
"It may take some time."
Alex immediately pulled a chair beside Jamie's bed.
"I'll be right here."
Dr. Patel smiled knowingly.
"I never doubted that."
The hours passed slowly.
Sometimes Jamie talked.
Sometimes he simply focused on breathing through each contraction.
Alex never left his side.
When Jamie's hand searched for his, Alex was already there.
When Jamie grew tired, Alex gently brushed damp hair away from his forehead.
When fear briefly appeared in Jamie's eyes, Alex reminded him exactly what they had practiced together.
"You're doing beautifully."
Jamie let out a shaky breath.
"It hurts."
"I know."
Alex kissed his forehead.
"I wish I could take it away."
Jamie smiled faintly.
"You already are."
"How?"
"You're here."
Alex tightened his grip on Jamie's hand.
"I'm not going anywhere."
The contractions became stronger as the evening stretched into night.
Jamie leaned heavily against Alex between each wave of discomfort.
"I'm sorry."
Alex looked genuinely confused.
"For what?"
"I'm squeezing your hand too hard."
Alex smiled.
"I wasn't planning on using it tomorrow anyway."
Jamie laughed through another contraction.
"You're terrible."
"I know."
"But you smiled."
"I did."
Dr. Patel returned regularly, encouraging Jamie every step of the way.
"You're doing exactly what you need to do."
Jamie nodded, determination replacing fear.
Alex looked at him with complete admiration.
"You are incredible."
Jamie shook his head.
"We're doing this."
Alex smiled.
"We are."
Near dawn, the room grew quieter.
The nurses exchanged encouraging smiles.
Dr. Patel looked at Jamie.
"I think it's almost time."
Jamie took a deep breath.
Alex gently cupped his face.
"Look at me."
Jamie did.
"You've already given me more happiness than I ever thought one person could."
His eyes shone with emotion.
"And in just a little while..."
He smiled.
"...we're going to meet our baby."
Jamie's fear eased immediately.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
The final moments required every bit of Jamie's strength.
Alex never once let go of his hand.
Every encouraging word.
Every reassuring smile.
Every whispered promise reminded Jamie that he wasn't facing this alone.
Then...
A tiny cry filled the room.
Everything stopped.
Jamie closed his eyes as tears spilled freely down his face.
Alex stood completely frozen.
The tiny voice cried again.
Louder this time.
Dr. Patel smiled brightly.
"Congratulations."
"You have a beautiful, healthy baby."
Neither Alex nor Jamie could speak.
They simply looked at one another, overwhelmed beyond words.
A nurse carefully wrapped the baby in a soft blanket before placing the tiny bundle into Jamie's arms.
Jamie stared in complete wonder.
"So small."
His voice barely existed.
"Our baby."
The little one blinked sleepily before curling tiny fingers around Jamie's thumb.
Jamie's heart completely melted.
Alex knelt beside the bed.
He looked from Jamie to their child before tears finally escaped his own eyes.
Jamie smiled through his own tears.
"Come here."
Very carefully, Jamie guided the baby into Alex's waiting arms.
Alex held the tiny bundle as though cradling the most precious thing in the world.
For a long moment he simply looked.
Tiny fingers.
Tiny nose.
Peaceful sleeping face.
The room disappeared.
Everything disappeared.
Only this moment remained.
He laughed softly through his tears.
"Hello."
The baby shifted slightly before settling comfortably against his chest.
Alex looked back at Jamie.
"I spent years chasing promotions."
His voice trembled.
"I thought every decision I made was leading me toward success."
He gently kissed the baby's forehead.
"I finally understand."
He smiled warmly at Jamie.
"Every choice."
"Every mistake."
"Every delay."
"Every impossible day."
"They all led me to you."
His eyes drifted back to the baby.
"And to this."
Jamie reached over, resting his hand against Alex's arm.
"Worth it?"
Alex laughed.
"Worth everything."
Several hours later, after doctors confirmed that both Jamie and the baby were healthy, visitors were finally allowed inside.
Emma cried before she even reached the bed.
"I can't believe I'm an aunt."
Marcus looked at the sleeping baby and smiled helplessly.
"I wasn't prepared for someone this tiny."
Daniel laughed.
"None of us were."
Mrs. Harper quietly kissed Jamie's forehead.
"My dear."
"You've made this neighborhood very happy."
Jamie smiled.
"We've been very lucky."
Mrs. Harper looked around the room.
"No."
She gently corrected him.
"You've been very loved."
A few days later, they carried their baby home.
Alex drove more carefully than he had ever driven in his life.
Jamie sat beside him with the tiny bundle sleeping peacefully in his arms.
Neither of them spoke very much.
They simply kept looking at the newest member of their family.
When the apartment building came into view, Jamie noticed colorful ribbons tied along the entrance.
A handmade banner stretched across the doorway.
Welcome Home!
Neighbors lined the sidewalk.
Emma waved excitedly.
Marcus and Daniel stood beside her carrying balloons.
Mrs. Harper held another freshly baked pie despite everyone's repeated reminders that new parents didn't need dessert.
The moment Alex opened the car door, applause broke out.
Jamie laughed through happy tears.
"You all did this?"
Emma smiled proudly.
"Of course we did."
Mrs. Harper stepped forward first.
She looked lovingly at the sleeping baby before smiling at both new parents.
"Welcome home."
Jamie looked around at every familiar face.
The people who had watched two neighbors become best friends.
Who had witnessed quiet acts of love before either of them understood what they meant.
Who had celebrated every milestone along the way.
Alex slipped one arm gently around Jamie's shoulders.
Together they crossed the threshold of the apartment that had once belonged to two lonely men.
Now it belonged to a husband.
A husband.
And the beautiful little family they had built together.
Home had never felt more complete.
Honey, I'm Home
Six months changed everything.
And somehow, nothing that truly mattered had changed at all.
The apartment still smelled of fresh coffee every morning.
The herbs still grew in neat rows across the balcony.
Alex still kissed Jamie before leaving for work, and Jamie still reminded him not to skip lunch.
Only now, another tiny person filled every ordinary day with unexpected laughter.
The nursery that had once stood quietly waiting had become the busiest room in the apartment.
Tiny socks seemed to appear everywhere.
Stuffed animals somehow migrated from the crib to the living room.
Soft lullabies drifted through the apartment at every hour of the day.
Jamie had never been happier.
Parenthood wasn't easy.
There were sleepless nights.
Unexpected tears.
Moments when neither of them could remember the last uninterrupted meal they had eaten.
Yet every difficult moment disappeared the instant their baby smiled.
Every sacrifice suddenly felt insignificant.
Jamie gently lifted his son from the play mat in the living room.
"There you are."
The little boy immediately reached for Jamie's face with chubby hands before laughing happily.
Jamie kissed the top of his tiny head.
"I think someone is hungry."
The baby answered with another delighted giggle.
Jamie laughed.
"I'll take that as a yes."
The kitchen looked wonderfully lived in.
Fresh bread cooled on a wooden rack.
Vegetable soup simmered quietly on the stove.
A bowl of cookie dough waited on the counter because Emma had announced another surprise visit later that evening.
Some traditions never changed.
Jamie settled his son into the high chair beside the counter while preparing dinner.
"You've become a very good kitchen assistant."
The baby enthusiastically slapped both hands against the tray.
Jamie laughed.
"I agree completely."
The apartment door opened quietly.
Alex stepped inside carrying his laptop bag over one shoulder.
Instead of looking exhausted the way he once had after long workdays, he looked content.
Several months earlier, shortly after declining the international relocation, he had accepted a new role leading regional development projects closer to home.
